The Sopranos Season 6 Episode 20 'The Blue Comet' Full TV Reaction!!

Comments

I know I'm super late - I mentioned elsewhere I never got the chance to finish S6 along with you - but I have to weigh in on the Melfi bomb. Remember way back in the "Employee of the Month" episode, where Melfi was SA'd? She had told Tony prior to her attack that she'd done all she could for him therapy wise and she was pushing him on to the next level of his therapy. Tony was resistant and didn't want to leave. Melfi felt better after the attack and after her assailant got off on a technicality that she knew she had power over her attackers life. All she had to do was say something to Tony and dude was done. So after she came to that conclusion, Tony wanted to go ahead and move on to the next therapist. She panicked, knowing she'd lose that comfort if he left. Melfi set herself up for this problem like 4 years ago when she chose to hold Tony back for her own selfish reasons. Don't get me wrong, I can sympathize with her feelings in that moment. She had no control of her life during that time. If she'd done that, who is to say Tony would've continued his behavior with the next therapist or even kept going? I believe it was a male doctor Melfi planned to send him on to.

loved the outro conversation. you guys were fired up!

Turns out, killing all your best employees isn’t best for business lol

Yeah, I'm a counselor and this is probably the best summary of that storyline. There were plenty of points where she should have stopped treating Tony, but it ends with her finally snapping and acting unprofessionally.

Jeffrey Miller

This is why I've always thought Dr Melfi was a quality person, but not always a great psychiatrist--she probably shouldn't have treated Tony for as long as she did, and she certainly shouldn't have ended it in the manner she did.

Robert Livingood

“Maybe you don’t even hear it when it happens”.

Ghost Crusaders

Chrissy would've been handy in this situation like this. Dude would've gone crazy. He'll, you think back and wonder how badass the crew would've been if they kept everyone together...Chrissy, Tony B, Furio, Richie, Feech, Ralph

“Maybe you don’t even hear it when it happens”. Bobby certainly heard it coming. It’s so sad that the last thought Bobby had was about how his son doesn’t care about his passion & hobby. Bobby lost his soul earlier this season. After doing so he came back to his family and hugged his daughter tight as he stood on the edge facing into the emptiness and void. It’s interesting to think how much is foreshadowed. Remember in episode 1(or episode 13) while up North at Bobby’s how Tony tells that story about the kid drowning in the pool. Then he says “I can’t get that story out of my head. I don’t know why”. And when Bobby says, “Maybe you don’t even hear when it happens” and Tony has a flashback to that moment, why do you think the show is showing us that moment? How often does this show use flashbacks like that? Not very. So coming into the final episode what should you be thinking about? Well it’s important to remember these guys aren’t rhode scholars. They are about one thing mostly and that’s money. Fighting like this costs money. The job sites get shut down and the public shootings brings unwanted attention. So do they want a prolonged war? Or make peace? Revenge? Or is it really all about money? Remember. New York also failed. They didn’t get Tony within that tight time frame. Without spoiling anything. Remember that this is The Sopranos. Everything happens for a reason. When the credits roll on that final episode, think about everything that happened & the feeling you had as the show comes to a close. Can’t wait til next week. This has been really fun. Next would is guna a wild comment section me thinks

One thing though, is that Phil's brother Billy was connected. The "no family" rule only applies to people that aren't living the gangster life. Billy's murder was unsanctioned, but it's still the kind of risk that comes with the profession.

Brandon

A point on the “going after family” thing, from Phil’s perspective, New Jersey has now gone after his brother in an unsanctioned hit for something personal, and if it wasn’t clear, that was actually Phil’s mistress (and her father) that the Italian hitmen killed. Also, if it wasn’t clear, the man Silvio kills at the start of the episode was a member of the Soprano family. But he was talking to New York and came to Silvio with the idea to take out Tony. P.S. I rarely post in these threads, but I love your reactions and really appreciate your channel. Thanks.

Robert Hare is the foremost expert on the study of psychopathic/sociopathic behavior. It was not an opinion piece.

I don’t think Dr. Melfi’s change was as simple or immediate as her interaction with Elliot. I think it was several years of friction and aggravation adding up, and all the negative experiences and emotions piling up. Elliot has been cautioning her for years about how costly the process has been for her, personally, as he sees it from an outside perspective. Maybe I’ve said it before, but the story perspective seems more compressed (perhaps unnaturally) when viewed from outside the timeline in which the show originally aired. Not only were there calendar gaps in realtime, but there are gaps in the storyline that are indicated subtly enough to miss in the era of binge watching.

David Wilkins

Lemme tell you a coupla three things: 1. It never sat right with me how abruptly the Melfi storyline ended. It seemed out of nowhere that she developed such contempt for Tony after reading a single article. It looked more like an opinion piece than anything peer reviewed. I get the point of it was that Tony is someone incapable of being saved because he ultimately doesn't feel like changing but they could have teased the eventual split over the course of a few episodes, or have a scene where Tony says something truly being the pale that shocks Melfi, spurring her to have second thoughts. Instead her goober inner circle convinces her to dump him, committing an egregious HIPAA violation in the process. At least we won't hear from Elliot and his water bottle or anyone from Melfi's inner circle or her family again. I never liked them. 2. Bobby was seriously out buying an 8000 dollar train in the middle of a mob war, madone. His wistful reminiscence of the old train to AC is a callback to the pilot, when Tony remarks how his story began at the very end of an era that was simpler and more prosperous. And in a way he was right, over the course of the show everything went off the rails (Paulie "heh heh") just like that train when Bobby died. His last words were, "he don't care", referring how he didn't think his son cared about him. Most of the show was about the relationship one has with their mother but 6B was more about relationships with fathers (Bobby with his son and father, Tony and his father, AJ, and even Junior) 3. Imagine if Tony hadn't killed or run off his most capable guys. No doubt a sober Chris and Furio would have handled some business. Even guys like Mikey Palmice and Ralph could have been key. Now Tony's number two is.... Paulie lol. Paulie is a survivor that's for sure.

ello oohoo?

Superbowl champions

It’s a New Jersey slang Italian pronunciation. I heard this discussed on the Stern show between Artie(Jersey] and SalLong Island) italians.

Korny

Agreed, these last 9 episodes really nail that down. I still have to hold my tongue for a bit until the finale goes up.

Brandon

I'm pretty sure "gabbagool" is just a slang way of pronouncing capocollo the deli meat. It's an italian american style of slang to not pronounce the vowel at the end of a word and the P ends up having a soft B sound. Other than Tony ordering that sandwich, I don't really remember anything else that happened in this episode. This one is pretty forgettable, am I right? 😉

Brandon

Have you guys considered doing a live stream discussing The Sopranos once you finish the show?

Christopher Runyon

The finale has a very unique feel to it and I can't wait for you guys to watch it!

Tommy Smith

New York was planning to absorb the New Jersey Crew for years. That was Carmine and Johnny Sack's original plan and why they started interfering in New Jersey as far back as season 1. Phil is doing it for more personal reasons though (his brother + the "glorified crew" thing).

Tommy Smith

Ooh good to know! Going to have to try some once baby comes and I can have deli meat again 😂 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

That’s fair and a great point! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Sam, Gabagool is actually Capicola! Any Italian deli should have it.

Ellie Miller

Lol. I can’t wait for next week. It’s going to be a super interesting discussion. I’m going to miss these two watching this show.

Stan the Man

Damn your right lol I guess it was just Bobby.

Night King01

I think dr melfi finally realized that Tony is a lost cause. That article seemed like a wake up call because it fits perfectly with how Tony acts around everybody. Validation is Tony’s biggest weakness and that’s why he goes to melfi to receive validation for his actions. Same thing with him making excuses to validate his actions like he did with Christopher. Tony is The definition of a narcissist and a psychopath and Melfis decision to stop seeing him is in line with the disintegration of Tony’s soul and character throughout the show. He is beyond help or what’s even worse is that he was always this way and the veneer had finally been removed.

Night King01

Silvio is shown to have other women with him, like when that guy got shot up at a restaurant in front of him.

Adam Baker

Forgot to mention Silvio’s wife is actually played by Steven Van Zandts actual wife. If you notice he and Bobby are the only faithful husbands in the entire show.

Night King01

Just when you think that Bobby was gonna make it. It’s funny how they set up that his obsession with trains causes bad things to happen and eventually caused his death.
