Drama Film Poll!

Help pick the Drama movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen Gran Torino, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction.

*We received a ton of suggestions, but we are trying to keep the poll sizes more reasonable. We have noted all suggestions for Future polls!

Comments

Agree the dialog and supporting acting was very amateurish. It's was only notable for Clint being in it.

Robert Smith

dead poet's society is 1989

espo13

lots of great titles!

Portis

i always prefer a first watch for both, but even though Daniel has seen a film he does a great job of not giving anything away AND staying involved with the reaction.

YoureMrLebowski

Last King of Scotland (2006)

YoureMrLebowski

Dang! lots of great movies on this list. For personal reasons, I chose Gran Torino, but Dan & Sam should also watch Chinatown and mystic river.

Chris Bruneau

...For example, I really like Love Always, which is always considered Steven Spielberg's cheesiest movie.

Neal Romanek

Network is a must-see. Some of the best writing in any movie and does for TV what Dr. Strangelove did for the Cold War.

Neal Romanek

Definitely some Di Palma movies! I think they may have already done The Untouchables and Scarface??

Neal Romanek

from my understanding, unfortunately it's only a shadow of his original script.

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

Using "first time watching Dead Poets Society" on the YouTube search field will gives me nearly 20 results on the first page.

Jeff B.

What reactor channels have done "Dead Poets Society"? I've only seen it on two channels.

Miles E Coburn

It's absolutely mind-boggling to me that Oliver Stone wrote "Conan the Barbarian".

Miles E Coburn

I've only seen two channels react to "Dead Poets Society".

Miles E Coburn

Definitely recommend The Client (1994) crime/suspense drama

Julie O

Second for Last King of Scotland

Florian Meier

Fantastic!

Catherine LW

Hope you end up watching JFK one day. It is a masterpiece.

David Murray

After watching Vertigo, since you’ve already seen Rear Window, you need to watch Brian De Palma’s Body Double.

Samolina Pilchard

Reiterating my suggestion for Network (1976). I also suggest The Last King of Scotland (2006).

Samolina Pilchard

Body Double from 1984. Another De Palma movie I liked.

Athos Count de la Fère

Eh, I'd watch you guys react to paint. Lol

ShadowVessel π

I voted JFK, Chinatown and Gone Baby Gone. JFK is fantastic (regardless of whether or not you believe it was a conspiracy. The film in and of itself is magnificant)

Mike the Ginger

Man… JFK needs more love… such a great movie

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

Yes, Blow Out, I've suggested in the past but gave up

Ken Veader

Out of the Past is such a great movie. Would love to see a reaction. If I remember right, there is so much smoking in that movie that you could get black lung just by watching it. 😂

Marcus Cato

What I meant by that is that to attend film school one would think a requirement would be to have a vastknowledge of film history and film. Film lovers, lovers of cinema as an art, usually don’t have such large gaps in their film knowledge. Usually. There are basic tenets of film theory & knowing those films and their history is something I would think would be a requirement for film school. I didn’t mean to suggest he didn’t love film and wasn’t enthusiastic about it. I don’t think he’d have a film reaction channel if he didn’t love it. I should’ve worded my post more carefully. What I meant is for someone who hasn’t seen a lot of what are considered “the great films of cinema” is surprising he went to film school. The film school types I’ve encountered are usually people who eat, breathe and sleep cinema. They’ve seen it all. While I wouldn’t expect film students to just watch film, I would think they would analyze all the great films, what makes them great, all that jazz. It would be like getting an associates degree in, I don’t know, drumming and having never heard a Neil Peart or Gene Krupa drum solo. It’s more surprising than anything just based on my own experience of the people I know who attended film school.

Stan the Man

Or Antonioni's film, Blowup, which inspired it and which is hugely iconic.

Jimmie V

I mean Gran Torino and JFK for sure are solid films but come on Trainspotting!!!!

Nathan Steele

Gotta get them to watch Out of the Past somehow!

Jarrod Hornbeck

Awesome! I can't wait for your thoughts! Now I can start pestering you guys do Kubrick's Barry Lyndon lol

bosho11

Still would love to see Brian De Palma’s “Blow Out” from 1981 in a poll at some point, or actually just as a reaction! Could fit in either drama or thriller or a De Palma retrospective. One of forgotten gems of the early 1980s.

Jarrod Hornbeck

How about a "guilty pleasure poll"? I mean there are some movies we all love that will never make/win a poll. We might like it because of the actors or plot or the cheesiness of it. A movie only our closest friends/family might know we like. It could simply be a poll with a list of suggestions for any genre combined. I would be curious to see what other people's choices would be.

Athos Count de la Fère

My suggestion: “The Outsiders” (1983).

Jeff Mills

Yay!!! 👏🏻💃🏻

Catherine LW

Though Stone only penned the screenplay while Alan Parker directed, I'd love to see a reaction to Midnight Express from 1978.

Paul Cox

It was my vote!

Philip Alan

Let's not forget John Williams' fantastic score as well.

Ron

I'm not sure if it was on the last poll, but it has been on past polls! We don't do the same films on every poll :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Vertigo is tentatively on the schedule for end of May! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I did tentatively put in on the schedule near Thanksgiving! We definitely want to check it out :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We've done some director only polls :) I'm sure we'll do more in the future. -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Coming soon! -sam

TBR Schmitt

Daniel has his associates in film. They didn't spend class time watching films. I'm not sure how he's not a film lover/enthusiast because he hasn't seen these films. -Sam

TBR Schmitt

some other ideas for polls - romance and film noir.

Birdie Num Num

cmon JFK!!

James

I think there is a difference between a great "movie" and a great "film" A film is notable for superior editing/acting/directing/film score etc. Usually wins Best picture or director. Film scholars study it. A great movie may have one of those components, and usually is popular, a fun enjoyable satisfying experience to see. Some on this poll are what I call "films" and some are just "movies". I think Gran Torino is a great movie, but Chinatown is a great film.

Athos Count de la Fère

👍🏼

Philip Alan

Rooting for Lost In Translation too

Ken Veader

Would love to watch JFK with you guys, hopefully if it doesn't win , you'll still consider it

Ken Veader

My favorite Billy Wilder film is his take on Sherlock Holmes

Ken Veader

Probably cause it's a great film

Ken Veader

i dont get it either mystic river is a better clint flick to watch... a harder movie to watch but a better one

Brian Sevilla

100000 percent agree and my thoughts

Jonathan Patrick

I'll never understand the hype behind Gran Torino. Clint is great in it, but that supporting cast acting is hard to watch. I don't get why this movie always wins these polls. Please Be Gentle. Just my opinion, of course.

Philip Alan

Hoping for a double Watch ;) Gran Torino + Chinatown, Eastwood and Nicholson are my Favorite Actors ;)

Florian Meier

Well I am originally from New York, though with time my accent has faded. As far as Ms. Dunaway, she had the classic old-style Hollywood star quality. She had a sort of polished elegance while being firmly direct. It was an interesting experience talking to her. Approachable but somehow distant. Friendly but guarded. A fascinating duality about her.

Athos Count de la Fère

Speaking of Billy Wilder, I just watched 'Ace in the Hole' last weekend for the first time and DAMN what a movie.

Paul Cox

Please consider some director only polls - titans like Billy Wilder and Kurosawa deserve ones, not just Golden Age or Foreign Film polls. Maybe another Scorsese poll as well. thanks!

Birdie Num Num

Amadeus for sure

bosho11

I imagine you as the barber in 'Coming to America' "Dis one time I was walkin down the street, turned da cawna and ran right inta Faye Dunaway!..."

Aaron Barlow

I saw Klansman in the theater. I loved the costumes. Growing up in the 1970s , that really took me back to what the adults were wearing.

Athos Count de la Fère

This is a serious Question for Daniel. I read somewhere he went to filmschool, is that true? If so it seems almost…inconceivable that he would have such a massive gap in his film viewing history. How does that happen? He hasn’t seen Chinatown, which is regarded as one of the greatest screenplays ever written. Or JFK, which is considered one of the best edited films of all time. That shocks me. I guess I’d just figure to attend films school one is usually a film lover/enthusiast.

Stan the Man

It's my favorite Nickelson movie. One Flew Over is a little too depressing for me, even though his performance in that is probably better.

Athos Count de la Fère

Yes! Chinatown must win this. There’s some other good movies in this poll but Chinatown is just so far above and beyond.

Stan the Man

Over Chinatown tho? Come on! Neither of them have seen Chinatown after it’s one of the great movies ever made!

Stan the Man

Chinatown better win. I swear if it loses, I’ve lost all faith in the world. Like how is Gran Torino beating it? Gran Torino is average at best. Chinatown is some of the great movies of all time. Come on Patreon people! Let’s get it done for Chinatown!

Stan the Man

The Scent of Thanksgiving is always welcome

Guston Zimasheen

Carpe Annum

Guston Zimasheen

Chinatown is one of my favorite movie. Easily in my top 10, and maybe in my top 5.

Michael Buhl

Vertigo really needs to happen. One of the all-time greats.

Marcus Cato

I'm torn between the fact that two of these movies are genuinely great but I suspect you will not enjoy them based on a couple of your other reactions.

Marcus Cato

DPS was 1989 not 75 and is Fantastic

Kevin colangelo

not that we want you to wait till Thanksgiving 🙂

YoureMrLebowski

great reaction

YoureMrLebowski

Also Crooklyn, for something less heavy.

Paul Cox

You definitely need to get Chinatown under your belts. Thelma & Louise is great too.

Neal Romanek

I would also recommend The Joy Luck Club

Nova Lena

Nixon is one of my Oliver Stone faves.

Neal Romanek

Absolutely. Need to see Malcolm X and Spike Lee's other masterpiece, Do The Right Thing. And BlacKKKlansman.

Neal Romanek

Please do, "Blue Velvet" one day. It's highly rated and it's one of David Lynch's more accessible works.

Jimmie V

I agree. ❤️

Athos Count de la Fère

Chinatown. I met Faye Dunaway back in 1998 when I was the manager of a retail store. Fascinating woman. Great acting by her in this movie.

Athos Count de la Fère

Definitely between Dead Poets Society and Thelma & Louise for me. Would love to see you two watch/react to The Color Purple….!

Bryon

I'm glad to see Lost In Translation on the poll

Michael Chavira

I hope The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) makes a poll.

Ellie Miller

Waitamin...wasn't Sleepers on the drama poll last time? If so, why not this time? I could be thinking of someone else's poll, though. Lol

ShadowVessel π

Lost in Translation!

UNC

So sad to see the masterpiece The Insider lagging near the bottom of the poll. If you get to Trainspotting, make sure to plan in the sequel as well, which I think is one of the greatest long-gap sequels ever made. Also, not super important, but there's no apostrophe in the title Dead Poets Society -- the apostrophe would be a society that consists of dead poets, no apostrophe is a society celebrating dead poets.

Tyler Foster

If JFK wins, and it might, it would be great to add Malcolm X to the schedule too (or at least to a future Denzel-specific or Spike Lee-specific poll).

Paul Cox

Really hoping you get to watch JFK. Incredible watch.

Garry L

When is the next Hitchcock film?

Catherine LW

GONE BABY GONE!

f hf

Gran Torino!

David Crabtree

Trainspotting is arguably the best british film of the 90s, so who am I to argue!

Nick Sneddon

My votes went to Trainspotting (Great story, great acting, great film making), Mystic River (The book made me a lifelong Dennis Lehane fan. A tragedy with serious punch), and Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams best work next to Good Will Hunting) Chinatown, Thelma and Louise, and Lost in Translation would be my next votes but I limit myself to three

Smooticus

I love 'Dead Poets Society' but I'm supposed to because I saw it at age 15 when it came out. But, as has been said in this thread, it does get reacted-to a lot. If it's not already on your radar, I recommend "The World According to Garp" for some even-earlier dramatic Robin Williams.

Jeff B.

Bring on all the Stones! ... what a Great Director ...

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

If you're gong to watch JFK, then you should also watch Oliver Stone's "Nixon" (1995).

Erwin Quiachon

If you haven't seen it already, "Scent of a Woman" (1992) is a generational must see, along with Rocky Balboa, for anyone still early in their careers dealing with really fucked up social politics. Scent of a Woman is also a seasonal tradition that people watch before Thanksgiving each year.

Erwin Quiachon

All but forgotten now, JFK is one of the best movies of the 90s and maybe the best edited movie of all-time.

Jason Chirevas

Hell yes! The cast is absolutely stacked with amazing performances!

Jeffrey Miller

JFK? Oliver Stone? LETS GO!

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

Can we add a proviso stating that if 'Dead Poet's Society' wins (which it will) that you put 2nd place early on the watch list after? I think it's a law that reaction channels cover 'Dead Poet's Society'

Jeffrey Miller

Reminder to add FORD V FERRARI to any upcoming drama or sports poll. It works for either and is a stunning film (Simone and George just released their reaction today and, as expected, they loved it).

Paul Cox

Legends of the Fall (1994) Meet Joe Black (1998) Both Starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins

Jonathan Patrick

My bad, now that that I think about it I believe you guys mentioned that before. Lol

Tristan Durant

Nightcrawler is incredible!!! Unfortunately, we've both already seen it :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Lmao Daniel did this one too, so it's not just me! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Good and doesn't get covered very much.

Jeffrey Miller

Didn't realize Dead Poet's Society was a remake... ;)

Charles Gaba

Nightcrawler (2014) Directed by Dan Gilroy w/Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, & the late Bill Paxton

Tristan Durant

My Favorite Poll, Hoping for Chinatown or Gran Torino and Thelma & Louise

Florian Meier

My vote went to Chinatown though.

Tim Raths

Dead Poets Society came out in 1975? 😂

Tim Raths

It's almost a recurring joke that the year will be different for Dead Poets every time, and never the right year.
