Doesn't matter it's all circumstantial and even the detective said it's incredibly hard to make a case without a body.

Her plan was to kill herself but didn’t follow through so ultimately her plan failed to put Nick in the death chamber.

Gone Girl spoilers
One thing that never made sense to me: why would Amy kill herself? She already successfully framed Nick for murder, even without a body. She's free and clear and a sociopath wouldn't kill themselves.

The book was terrific, and I though the movie did it justice. Loved watching your guys reaction to this one

My wife and our friends had front row center tickets to this movie and we were NOT prepared, lol. I was still processing all the twists and turns that had happened and then BLAM Neil Patrick Harris gets murdered in 4K. We were shooketh
Also, I'm so glad Amy didn't kill the cat, seeing how much Nick clearly cares for him and how much she loves messing with Nick. I was low key stressed out the whole movie about that cat

I've been waiting for this reaction far too long. Watching your face expressions throughout the movie was comedy gold, haha - especially Sam's judgmental looks in the first act, love it!
I've seen this on the big screen back then and I still vividly remember the chills I had watching the terrific Rosamund Pike's performance. Ben Affleck was also great and I love Carrie Coon as his character's twin sister low-key wishing I had a sibling like that in my life, but Amazing Amy takes the cake.
I do hope you'll react to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo one day which is very similar cinematography and tone-wise, also scored by Trent Reznor.

Great reaction, as always. You guys really need to check out Fincher's version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It's at times a (very) difficult watch, but from an aesthetic, tone and storytelling perspective, the film is a near masterpiece.

Agree. The book was amazing. The movie was quite good, but not quite on the same level, if only because you don't get to delve as deeply into the social commentary.

This was a perfect storm: a great film, a crazy story, twists and turns, and top-tier reactors going in blind. It all added up to even more fun than I had the first time I saw this.
My anticipation for a reaction to my favourite Fincher film, The Game (1997), has now quadrupled. Like Gone Girl, it's a great mystery, a great puzzle to try to solve as you watch, and also like Gone Girl, a genuine mindf#ck.

Reese Witherspoon produced the movie because she was originally on board to play Amazing Amy. When Fincher came on board, they discussed it and he felt Rosamund Pike was a better fit, and she agreed to step aside. I love this movie, but I would also really like to see that version of the film, as in my view Pike always comes off a little icy even when you're supposed to like her. I imagine Witherspoon seguing from Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) to Tracy Flick (Election) and I think I'd be a little more convinced by both.
In addition to "Fear the Walking Dead," another great movie with Kim Dickens (Detective Boney) that will never win a poll but I think you both would really, really enjoy is the 1998 comedy-mystery Zero Effect, starring Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman. Stiller made quite a few fascinating movies as both a filmmaker (Reality Bites, The Cable Guy) and an actor (Zero Effect, Permanent Midnight, Your Friends and Neighbors) in the '90s that are much different than the kinds of material he's associated with now and I think Zero Effect is one of the best of them. An unjustly forgotten gem.

The book in my opinion is a bit better but not by much. The author of the book wrote the screenplay.

This is such an excellent film I’m glad I saw it in theatre and one of many reasons why Fincher is one of my fav directors. If you guys haven’t already you should check out Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhaal.

I was so sure Margo was played by Anna Torv (from TLOU and Mindhunter, which I also was obsessed with lol, so bummed there won't be a third season), Carrie Coon is like her doppelganger. One thing I noticed was that she seemed shorter but I chalked that up to standing next to Ben Affleck and Tyler Perry, who are both fairly tall guys. Anna Torv is taller, 5'8"' versus Carrie Coon at 5'5", her voice also seemed a little different to me.
Amy was terrifying. I did think it was kind of funny the way she got ripped off, a case of someone being extremely book smart (and scarily manipulative) but still not quite as street smart, should have had a gun if she was going to be on the run with that wad of cash, and as soon as she showed her hand and heard someone messing with the door she should've had it at the ready.
Anyway, great film, great reaction, looking forward to more Fincher, especially Zodiac.

He was talking about The Fincher Netflix series “Mindhunter”. But Dan confused Carrie Coon with Anna Torv, who is in Mindhunter and the Last of Us
2023-04-27 01:40:54 +0000 UTC
Damn, that was good. I love David Fincher and I will always love his cinematography with the those super black shadows. Great performances all around, even from Tyler "Madea" Perry as the lawyer.
Your guys' reaction at the twist was great. I kinda figured it was a hoax early on because of all the focus on how Nick "looked guilty" or didn't react "the right way." Few things make me angrier than when people say someone didn't react the right way in some extreme situation. From my experience as a therapist, while certain kind of reactions may be more common, there is no such thing as a universal behavior to any given situation, and it does cause problems in investigations because cops can focus too much on the wrong person.
One of the great themes in this film seems to be that everyone's stories are often mixed with truth, exaggerations and falsehoods. It's implied that the first guy Nick met with really was framed for sexual assault, but it quickly becomes clear that the story with Desi was at least mostly true. Which I think also parrallels another theme I got from this film which is just because someone does one bad thing, doesn't mean they would be capable of doing another bad thing.
Yes, Nick was having an affair, but it's a huge leap of logic to think because he is cheating means he'd be capable or even want to kill his wife. But that's what we do as a society. Obviously infidelity is bad, but if the punishment for cheating was death well your commute to work would be a lot shorter.

Fantastic movie...David Fincher is easily one of my favorite directors working today. Rosamund Pike is always spectacular, but kudos to Ben Affleck for bringing the goods on this one. They're both such pieces of shit--and yet I'd gladly watch them be pieces of shit.

Nick definitely wanted to stay with Amy despite hating her and even fearing her. In some ways they make a great couple, he's a complete narcissist and she's a complete psycho. We all feel for Nick when we find out the truth, but there's a reason he's looked upon negatively when he's an early suspect. He's just not a good guy.
Rosamund Pike is awesome as Amy! How she didn't win best actress is beyond me.
We definitely need more Ben Affleck on the channel. He's a fascinating guy and artist, and his comeback since 2007 has been amazing, as a writer, director, and actor. Some films you need to check out: Gone Baby Gone (Director), The Town, Argo, and the recently released 'Air', all of which he directs and features in. Then you got films like State of Play, The Accountant, The Way Back, and The Last Duel (also Writer).
Minor details btw but the sister, played by Carrie Coon, was not in Manhunter (which was Michael Mann, not Fincher). She wasn't on Mindhunter either if that's what you meant. You recently saw her in the new Ghostbusters though.
Just on an ending note, people sometimes think that the opening and closing scenes are the same. They're not. You can obviously see that Amy's hair is shorter in the ending scene. But both are so brilliant. In the opening, we hear Nick talking about cracking her skull, and then we see her look back at him, looking scared. That helps plant the seeds and shape our view of Nick, that he's abusive towards her.
In the ending scene, similar position, but Amy looks back with that wicked smile. We know the truth now, we know she's in control. Just fucking awesome!

Reading this book was such an experience. The hard turn it takes half way when the perspective shifts from the diary entries was nuts. The movie did as good a job as you can recreating it, but the novel did a better job of making you fully believe Nick did it.
Also, Margo is played by Carrie Coon, not the same actress as Tess.

Incredibly random but have you guys ever watched Napoleon Dynamite (2004)? If not, it’d be a nice change of pace from the incredibly dark/heavy stuff you guys have been watching lately :D

It won't ever win a poll, but I think you would like the mystery Witness for the Prosection(1957). It would be nice to see a Billy Wilder film reacted to(he is considered one of the greats). Also Sleuth (1972) is another great twisty mystery.
