Sci-Fi Movie Poll!

Help pick the Sci-Fi movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen Dredd, Donnie Darko & Looper, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction.

*We received a ton suggestions on the last polls, but we are trying to keep the poll sizes more reasonable. We have noted all suggestions for future polls!

Comments

I don’t think enough people have seen Dark City. It’s such an amazing movie especially visually.

James Whalen

not a Donnie Darko fan? 😆

YoureMrLebowski

I am about to suggest something not many are going to like. Since it looks like Dredd is going to win this poll and if it does, I would like to suggest also you guys reacting to Stallones 1995 version of Judge Dredd. Its not as good as the one on the poll but it is a Stallone Movie and we havn't seen one in a while. It also has rob schiender for comic relief.

MCL-1984

Agreed

Nathan Steele

Agreed

Nathan Steele

Sunshine is soooooo underrated

Nathan Steele

Looper and Sunshine are amazing though

Nathan Steele

Yeah, the fact that Dredd is running so far ahead is depressing. And Gattaca too, for that matter. For certain, I’m not the youngest person here, but I’m reminded now almost daily, how fast time travels, and how quickly bedrock movies recede from the public mind. And it’s not because I’m too old to appreciate newer ones.

David Wilkins

Ex Machina is already on the channel if you wanna search for it 👍

Paul Cox

A shame you're ending up watching an Alex Garland movie and its Dredd instead of his much superior Ex Machina. Actually, all of the movies that came in #2, #3, and #4 are more interesting. Ah well. Please put those guys back into the mix for the next sci-fi poll.

Mark Kelso

Dark City and Gattaca don't get enough love for how good they are. If they don't win, hopefully you two will react to them at some point because both are really good.

JayWantsACat

All are good, but honestly I would skip Dune 84. Go straight to the Denis Vielleneuve version, it's 1000 times better

Odd Thomas

Come on! Dark City better pull ahead otherwise I’m losing faith in y’all.

Stan the Man

All 3 of the top vote getters are worthy so far. Dredd should have been a big hit at the box office and started a franchise. I adore Sunshine, but I get that it's not a movie for everyone.

Mark Majeski

Hoping HUGELY for Dark City to pull into 1st place. Such a unique film, and spectacular to look at. If it doesn’t make the cut this time, I hope you’ll keep it alive in your to-watch notes. It’s one of a few sci-fi’s that shouldn’t be missed.

David Wilkins

I tend to not vote for titles either of the Schmitts have previously seen, but I threw one to Donnie Darko this time just because I think more channels should react to it. Hoping Dark City can slide into first place before all is said and done here.

Paul Cox

So I gotta say Donnie Darko doesn't really belong in a poll like this As I mentioned earlier it's not really thought of as sci-fi (even though it could be classified as such). It's a very funny movie too, as funny as any comedy so it could be classified as comedy as well for comedic elements. In a poll like this people are gonna vote for other movies since it's a "Sci-Fi" poll it's like.. Well what sci-fi movie do you want us to watch.. So other films that stand out more as "sci-fi" will be voted over DD since it's like, for ex. Dune is on here. Let's say Star Wars was on here (and I know it's more fantasy than sci-fi.. w/e just go with it).. No one's gonna choose DD over Star Wars. It's in a league of its own. Can't really describe why without away anything about the film. BTW: Dune is a must watch. Classic. Like Planet of the Apes classic. Can't believe it has as little votes as it does.

Alex

Oh I never saw your comment. I'd buy them a copy it they needed.

Drzergberg

“He can tune!!!!”

PIG

signs

Tee Grant

Oh, forgot about Rollerball. That's a good one.

Athos Count de la Fère

Hard agree on Vanilla Sky.

Tyler Foster

If you're looking for Blade Runner-adjacent movies, you could also throw Soldier in there.

Tyler Foster

I think watching the Lynch Dune first is a great idea, even if it's not the Lynch that I would most like to see on the channel next. (I suppose I'm just thrilled to see any Lynch on any channel.)

Tyler Foster

As I mentioned above, The director's cut is also conveniently available on Amazon Prime to rent, so this won't be a case of having to settle for the theatrical cut because the alternate version is only on disc.

Tyler Foster

I have hope that eventually Brazil will make it on the channel via Sam's love for Robert De Niro.

Tyler Foster

Yes, Westworld. It's really the genesis of The Terminator movies.

Neal Romanek

Oh, heck yes. Is it sci-fi? Kind of pure dystopian fantasy.

Neal Romanek

It is an 80's classic.

Neal Romanek

A really cool movie.

Neal Romanek

I was going to suggest Looper. A really cool, underrated movie with an amazing premise. And Outland is great - and it sort of pretends to be part of the Blade Runner universe, sort of.

Neal Romanek

David Lynch's Dune has aged really well. It's really strange, and very very David Lynch. And it manages to do the Dune story justice (with a few wacky David Lynch additions) Another movie to see is Jodorowsky's Dune - an amazing documentary about the most amazing film never made, a 1970's version of Dune that was one of the most ambitious scifi projects ever. The movie fell apart but a lot of the people who worked on it went on to do other important sci-fi movies, like Alien. It might be too niche geek for you guys but it woube cool to do all three movies - the doc, David Lynch's Dune and the new version.

Neal Romanek

Let's get those 1970's dystopian classics going! Logan's Run, Rollerball, Soylent Green, Westworld!

Neal Romanek

TBR's already seen Dredd, so please vote for Dark City, it's a classic

Lorenzo Turner

Dredd's definitely my top pick for this time around, but Dark City, Looper, Her, and Sunshine are all great as well, plus Logan's Run is just delightfully cheesy 70s fun. Hoping all of these get their turn at some point!

Wes Senna

It is dated, although some themes are very relevant to today, like the 'elite's' obsession with population control and their big lies to the masses who blindly go along with them and anyone who sees through it becomes an enemy of the mob. I guess it's a bit of nostalgia for me, I was born in 72 so I'm an oldy.

Aaron Barlow

It's also David Lynchs most hated movie since he didn't have control over the vision of the movie.

Drzergberg

Watched Logans Run this week and it was good but it doesn't hold up too well in my opinion.

Drzergberg

If you watch Dark City, do not watch the theatrical version! The directors cut is the only way to watch this movie. The producers forced them to put a narrator in the beginning of the movie basically explaining the entire store since they believed audiences would be too stupid.

Drzergberg

Logans run is a classic, I still remember Jenny Agutter (Nurse Alex in American werewolf in London) in that short green silk miniskirt.

Aaron Barlow

Dune 1984 is seriously underrated.

Aaron Barlow

Forbidden Planet (1956) and Soldier (1998) a great Kurt Russell movie

christopher brown

Cocoon won't be our winner, but I'm curious how you'd even do it. It's not on any of the streaming platforms and if you want a dvd copy you'd have to do some hunting*. It's caught up in rights limbo land and no one seems to have a straight answer as to why. (*of course there's Pxxxxx Bxx)

Paul Cox

Suggestions : The Andromeda Strain (1971), Soylent Green (1973), Westworld (1973), Rollerball (1975), The Stepford Wives (1975) & Capricorn One (1977).

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Dredd always wins but I would rather Sunshine did; top tier sci-fi

Odd Thomas

lol.... i know what u mean

Victor M.P.G.

Sunshine is a wonderful , underated and tense slow cooked sci-fi

Victor M.P.G.

Another sci fi recommendation is Terry Gilliam's Brazil

bosho11

I voted Cocoon.

Mike the Ginger

I hope Cocoon makes it one day. Such a wonderful film.

James Willingham III

It makes me so happy to see Her still on the poll! 🥹🧡

Domino

Tough choice, too many great movies. Dredd is currently in the lead and I'm not mad about it, but Gattaca is imo a seriously underrated little gem, as is Dark City, and I just personally love Donnie Darko (although partly because the soundtrack is like an awesome 80s retro KROQ playlist).

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

If you two like Demolition Man, you should check out the 1995 Judge Dredd. Same 90's sci-fi action vibe. Not huge on a lot of these movies, but I'll go with Dredd Should consider watching City of Lost Children and Delicatessen, both great off-beat sci-fi movies.

bosho11

I don't like the DC, personally. Sure, the opening narration is a stupid idea and the extended scenes are interesting to watch, but they're unnecessary and cause some pacing issues.

Marcus Laubner

Replace Dune with the newer version, and it'd get my vote. The 80's one is such a mess lol

Mike Adams

I am admittedly not a fan of Dredd at all, but it's nice to see a movie as great and relatively underrated as Dark City all the way in second. Of course, this is a fresh poll and that could change. If you do end up reacting to Dark City because it comes close to winning, I highly recommend watching the director's cut, which you can pay to rent on Amazon Prime.

Tyler Foster

This is a tough one because normally I would agree on people seeing the "original" before the "remake" but with Dune that isn't really the case because they are just two different adaptions of the same book as opposed to one being a "remake" of the other. I would recommend you put this on a poll when you eventually decide to watch one of them because I think most people would recommend you see the newer, better, more accurate Dune movie before watching the old one and knowing some plot points. I think the experience of the newer Dune movie really benefits fresh eyes.

Cactus Tony

We weren't sure which Dune, so we figured we'd put up in the original and we'd definitely follow up with the new one :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I wish we could! We have both seen it, but love that movie! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Vanilla Sky (2001) TimeCop (1994)

Jonathan Patrick

I mean, if any genres ever melted into one another, it'd be those two, to be frank. And Dredd does some massive lifting in terms of establishing and fleshing out Sci-fi concepts, with its only shortcoming being that there aren't ten more amazing sequels in production right now. I really feel like they did that movie dirty by not having yet built upon its foundation, but that'll change and when we get some great new take on it, it'll be a great day. Amazing flick either way.

W T

Completely agree. That’s probably a better way to describe it, rather than “underrated.” I did find a reaction to it though! https://youtu.be/Y8M-UvUzgEU

Kase West

Also Tyler Durden. Probably one of the most stolen monikers ever from a movie :)

Alex

See movies like Donnie Darko and Fight Club you have to see them multiple times and the more you see them the more you see IN them.

Alex

I don't know about Cloud Atlas necessarily being underrated, but I sure know it's one of my favorite movies ever. As Roger Ebert put it, and I'm paraphrasing wildly here: "No idea what makes it so great, but this shit is wild" And it was, indeed, wild. Never saw anyone react to it, nor did it win polls. It also kind of seems to be a hit-or-miss kind of movie, with audiences being either meh on it or just outright loving it. Still very much a great movie in my book, with one of my favorite soundtracks to go with it all. Top-notch performances by incredible actors too, it's a dang masterpiece.

W T

I voted for Looper. Because of Bruce Willis. I have a suggestion; Outland, with Sean Connery. Sam might like that because of him.

Athos Count de la Fère

Mine is Fight Club and about that many times.

Korny

Short Circuit (1986)

Duncan

Also something I think that should be on the list for 80s movies (not necessarily the genre just when it was made): Flight of the Navigator. This is a sci-fi. Great film. And The Wizard. The Wizard is not sci-fi.. It's about video games.. One of my favorite movies and one of the first movies that glorified video games.

Alex

None of the above would be my first choice.

Korny

Dark City needs to be reviewed. But the directors cut, not the theatrical version.

Lucas Coker

Vote Gattaca ☑️

Ellie Miller

Donnie Darko is more of a Philosophy movie. Although technically yeah it is sci-fi. Donnie Darko is a must watch. The only movie I've seen 142 times.

Alex

Actually, I agree about Dredd being more Action than SciFi, especially for the purposes of a genre poll.

Trepanation21

I have a suggestion that I'm surprised isn't on this poll, because it's usually the first to come up on a sci-fi one. Independence Day. You guys would love that one. Unless of course you've both seen it.

Raven Dark

Most of these are excellent picks, but if I really had to chose - which I did have to - I'll exclusively vote Her. Easily the one that stuck with me the most, as great as Donnie Darko or Dredd ended up being.

W T

I don't think I've seen a reactor do Dark City yet so that would be dope. Dredd would be numero two for me, but that could be on an action poll as well. The rest of these are alright. Would much rather see them do the recent Dune movie instead of the old one.

Cactus Tony

I have 2 suggestions: Midnight Special Cloud Atlas They may not get many votes, I’m afraid, but they’re both extremely underrated.
