Top Gun: Maverick (2022) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

By the time this movie came out last year we had been waiting over 35 years for it and many people didn't think it would deliver. Thankfully it was worth the wait, it is a sequel that actually gets things right without ruining the original.

I couldn't imagine that they'd let him fly, I always assumed he was back seat with a toy joystick like a kid pretending to drive in the back of his parent's car with a toy stealing wheel lol

Aaron Barlow

Even though this film or the original never identifies what country "the enemy" comes from you still have people making an issue out of it. Matthew Modine was originally considered for the role of Maverick in the first movie but he turned it down because he didn't agree with the "glorification of the military" in the film. At what point in that movie is there a glorification of the military? It's literally a contest about who the best fighter pilot is until the mission at the very end, and this guy has to make something political that wasn't.

Here' s a recent interview with real life Top Gun graduates, including Admiral Paparo, the current Commander of the Pacific Fleet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWrWl9fKzlM

For a movie that was supposed to be released in 2020, it was well worth the wait. I thought they did a good thing with Val Kilmer and writing his own cancer into the roll - and it was neat to see Iceman made CINCPAC

Smooticus

Wait. What? They haven't done M:I? That's like not seeing a JOHN WICK movie or something.

Philip Davetas

+1 for the Mission: Impossible movies. Unless they’ve seen them already.

Tim Raths

every time i watch this movie i immediately download Ace Combat 7. Boutta dust off the ol VR set too

Sebastian Syrinx

there was a thing at the beginning of your version that said "MGM+" that wasnt on mine, that was probably the case

Sebastian Syrinx

Great reaction guys. Apparently the US Military wouldnt let Tom Cruise fly the jets himself (though I believe all the actors were actually in the backs of the jets in any shot where you can see their faces). However, that last shot with Maverick flying with Penny in his personal plane is actually Tom Cruise flying, because of course he's a certified pilot. I really hope you guys do the Mission Impossible series. Tom Cruise himself does some crazy stunt flying in a helicopter in the newest film, on top of a bunch more insane stunts.

Sebastian Syrinx

This was the theatrical version, there is an amazing scene in the directors cut where Mavricks jet has a flat tyre on the aircraft carrier just as they are about to set off on the final mission and they have to call in Hondo to quickly change the tyre and save the day 💪🏾

Oh that's awful! I hadn't heard about backlash for her. I thought the song was incredible, and while I didn't catch that meaning behind the song, I think that makes it all the more powerful! -Sam

LOL! -Sam

It's the best when you get a great audience in theater! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely on the mend! Took some much needed time off from work too :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh shoot!! We watched on Amazon too, I wonder what happened :( I'm glad you were able to line it up though! Sorry about that! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL the cough drop crunch! I hope you feel better soon! Haha Daniel has an excellent memory, very cool that they were able to tie that in from the first film! Thanks so much and thank you for the recommendation! -Sam

I was never a fan of TOP GUN. But I always have a soft spot for avionics. I play BLAZING ANGELS and HAWX with the Thrustmaster and everything. But this flick is the legitz! If it's got thrust, it's a must! MAVERICK is totally my jam. H_ngm_n is for realz, yo! "If you're legit good at everything, that gives you the authority to be an asshole." Dig that.

Philip Davetas

I was reading that Lady Gaga was getting a lot of shit for her introduction at the Oscars. People had no clue that song is about suicide prevention for a character showing suicidal tendencies. Maverick still has survivors remorse and repeatedly risks his life to find some honorable way to die. The first time I watched this movie, I honestly thought it was going to end with Maverick killing himself after his smile fades when he finds that Penny isn't there for him when he gets back. A lot of families of military suicides talk about the smile the victim had leading up to their suicide. The friends and families often don't see it coming because of the smile and the brave face the victims try to keep that fools everyone into thinking that they're ok.

I like how they never identified who 'the enemy' was. The Uranium enrichment plant was definitely an allusion to the real life Iranian fiasco but it's hard to imagine Iran having superior fighters. They would perhaps buy Russian Migs or American older planes like F14s but America has always had the technological edge in military tech. I guess it was a plot device to add danger to the situation. Not identifying the enemy was a clever move to avoid any political connotations that might offend snowflakes.

Aaron Barlow

Honestly one of the greatest action movies of all time.

Aaron Barlow

I am so glad I watched this. I was debating whether to watch this tonight, and it exceeded all my expectations. Such an amazing movie. I think those planes that the enemies had were far more advanced and whatever that guy did was a normal maneuver for them. Dude was definitely the enemies' version of Maverick lol, but they kept on mentioning how F18s and F14s were no match for those fighters. I'm gonna find out what kind of planes those were to find out coz I would think that F18s are better than F14x but not sure. It's been a long time since my Trapper Keeper with a fighter jet on it days ;) Update: Found this article on the matter. Apparently the superiority of the bad guys' aircraft was just for the movie. In real life they're not really that much better than any other current fighter jets. Cool read, the plane Maverick is working on in the movie actually belongs to Tom Cruise. https://www.military.com/off-duty/movies/2022/04/14/complete-guide-fighter-aircraft-top-gun-maverick.html

It’s too bad you guys didn’t catch this in the theater because you missed out on an amazing experience.

Tim Raths

For real. H_ngm_n!

Philip Davetas

Hangman ✈ 🖤

Andrew

better than original **

Chet Overholt

I’m 48 so I remember watching the original in theaters several times and loving it… But this is definitely a rare occasion where the sequel is than the original.

Chet Overholt

As an aviation geek, this movie is pretty close to aviation porn. :-) Tom Cruise’s personal P-51 in there also.

Andy

I went to see this movie in theaters at IMAX and it was absolutely insane with sound and the amount of people in the theater . We were literally elbow to elbow and the uproar of cheering at the end of the film was crazy . Love this movie , one of the best sequels ever in my opinion

Wyatt Nuxoll

Just saw your YouTube post. Hope yall get home safe.

Shaun2342!

This film is off the chain! Amazing. Tom Cruise is a legend

Alex

Seconded! The Right Stuff is SO great, and terribly underrated.

VivendoBem

Surprising pleased with this movie, I have a new celebrity crush now 🤦 Monica Barbaro 😍😂 also I'll watch anything with Miles Teller that dude is a Stud, there's some whispers/rumors going around that he's one of the top actors possibly to play the next bond but we'll see lol such an incredible actor 🙏

dieselbeast

💯Penny was the admiral’s daughter in the beginning of the first film that was an offscreen character. I also like how Rooster’s appearance paid homage to Goose’s. 😎

Tristan Durant

Awesome reaction, thanks. Two other great Val Kilmer performances are Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (with Robert Downey Jr.) and Thunderheart (with Graham Greene).

Jen Barnes

I love that Daniel recognized Chad Radwell from the opening credits. I was a big fan of Scream Queens:)

Mark M

I feel like samatha was still feeling a little tired. I hope u guys are feeling better

TinCan Cosmanaut

Please watch "The Right Stuff" (1983) for all of the aerospace and Chuck Yeager references in Maverick. They turned Maverick into Chuck Yeager for the sequel: The P-51, setting a new speed record from the original Mach 1, making a fortune as the test pilot who can't be killed, crashing on a test flight, Yeager shot down 5 planes in one day, Yeager was the real life Maverick.

Erwin Quiachon

If this movie is ever re-released in theaters, I hope you two get to experience it on the big screen! It was amazing to see on IMAX with the visuals and sound. Also thanks for answering my questions on the Q&A! That was fun video! 😁

Nismo

Can't say I'm a big a fan of the original--long live Goose! But this is a really damn good sequel. I went into this expecting some cool flight sequences, and not much else; but it completely surprised me. That whole end action sequence into enemy territory is top-notch.

Steve Mercier

I highly recommend another film made by Tom Cruise & Joseph Kosinski: Oblivion

Odd Thomas

Timestamp is a bit off if watching on Amazon but it's nothing bad. You can easily sync up to their movie window.

Woo-HOO! Definitely my favorite movie of last year. Glad to see you guys are feeling better. (I haven't watched yet, but I never heard one cough drop crunch in your EEAaO reaction. Lol) I'm still trudging through my own crud. 🤧 (Edit) Just got done. That was awesome. Daniel is the only reactor I've seen who remembered Penny Benjamin's name drop from the first movie. This is why I love you guys. You get it. 😊 There was a couple of other things y'all caught that I can't remember now. Lol Always a blast to watching TV with you guys. You should watch Tag (2018). It's probably got my favorite Jon Hamm character of all time. It's hilarious. 😂

ShadowVessel π

Woohoo as soon as I get home from set I am going to my danger zone
