Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

I've seen it three times now and it just gets better each time. There's so much going on it's nearly impossible to get everything on first viewing.

Every so often a movie comes along that allows you to reimagine what movie-making can be...Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Children of Men...and I think this one. I typically don't care at all about awards or Oscars or any of that--I think movies and art are best weighed by time: what's still important to us 5 or 10 or 50 years down the line, as opposed to what wins the current popularity contest. I think this time they got it right. This movie is amazing. The cast is phenomenal. And the visuals managed to spark true inspiration in me. Spectacular reaction as usual.

(Random alert) I was watching this funny video about Star Trek: The Next Generation (I'm not gonna say what it is because I don't want to spoil anything).. and I figured out how to express. coz when I recommended here to watch the newer (80s not current) Star Trek series before the original series, someone said the original series is the best, and I didn't really have a way of really expressing what it's like and why you should watch Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager (and the Next Generation-base movies) before the original series. You guys (talking specifically to Daniel and Sam here) have seen newer movies and shows obviously. And at least Sam never saw any older movies until you guys watched them on the channel. You said you originally thought that older movies would not be as good as newer movies, but you were surprised. Watching the original series of Star Trek first.. is kind of like you've never seen any new movies at all. And before watching any new movies you're only going to watch old ones first. Star Trek: The Next Generation is very iconic and has iconic characters and situations, and the subsequent series spin offs (Deep Space Nine and Voyager) overall tell a broader story. There's a lot of cross-over and characters move from one series to the next. Plus Star Trek is science fiction. So it's kind of a concern to me that if you watch a sci-fi show that was made in the 60s using special effects from the 60s.. Maybe I'm wrong. But everything is just so much better visually in the newer series from the 80s and 90s that you can appreciate the Star Trek universe better. It's a better introduction to it, than the Original Series where the sets are all very obvious and the production value is just no where near as good as the Next Generation and higher. It's similar to how Cobra Kai production value changed from Season 1 when it was on YouTube to when it got on Netflix, but WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY MORE MASSIVE. It's just way better visually and in terms of the number of locations etc. After you see the newer Star Treks from the 80s and 90s, then you can watch the original series and you already understand everything and you can see how it started, and have an appreciation for it you already understand everything, you're more invested so.. you're going to like it more. Where as if you watch the original series first you may not be as into it not knowing anything about the Star Trek universe.. I dunno-- at least that's how it was for me. It also works because later on there was a series Star Trek: Enterprise which goes even before the time of The Original Series which is the first Enterprise ship to ever be made at the start of humanity's journey into Deep Space. So it's sort of like TOS and Enterprise etc. are like prequels, to where TNG is .. that's just how I experienced it and I just love it that way. It works really well, and I think it's good for someone who's never seen anything older than the JJ Abrams Star Treks (which is not Star Trek..).. Star Trek ended when the last series finished. There is one on CBS that some may argue is not Star Trek but I like it.. I can't remember what it's called. But JJ Abrams Star Trek is not Star Trek. it's some fan films... :)

To answer a question in the wrap-up discussion, I think Birdman is the "whackiest" Best Picture winner before this one.

Wow, that was a trip. Saw this for the first time with you guys. I found it a little hard to get into at first. Like Daniel, maybe I tried too hard to understand what was going on, to try to understand the “rules” of the universes, when of course that’s not the point, and even says on screen at one point there are no rules. It reminded me just a little bit of Slaughterhouse-Five, just in the all moments exist at once sense, and also a little bit of Cloud Atlas with its “alternate versions” of the same characters narrative (both movies which, if you haven’t seen you should). But when Daniel compared it to It’s A Wonderful Life, that blew my mind a little bit. Evelyn is facing an existential crisis, and instead of sending Clarence, the Universe opens itself up to her, showing its infinite possibilities, not explaining itself to her but trying to get her to learn a lesson about how she already has everything she needs. If I have one criticism of the film, it falls into too many fight sequences – those don’t do too much for me- and when you have a high, interesting concept film like this , why do you feel a need to focus on that? (I also had the same criticism of Cloud Atlas). I also liked the use of Clair De Lune, one of my favorite pieces of music, never heard it played with a foot on a Yamaha organ before! (By someone with Hot Dogs for hands!) It was also good to see James Hong still working. Jeez the guy is 94 , been in over 650 movies and television appearances, and he’s still making movies! He’s been in everything from Chinatown, to Blade Runner, to Big Trouble in Little China, to Revenge of the Nerds 2! Anyway, Great Movie, Great Reaction. Keep up the good work!

Awesome trivia! Thanks!

@Julian ORRR - and this is far more likely - it's because it's a story about generational hurts that people unwittingly pass down to their kids that perpetuate harm they've experienced themselves. "Overrated" and "pretentious" are just euphemisms for "there weren't enough explosions and tits."

Rue

I hadn't watched this movie since I was waiting for one of my favorite reaction channels so I could watch it with them and you two were the first - so yay! And don't even worry about having kind of an un-reaction with this one - with movies like this, it's really more of an experience than anything and you just kinda have to take it all in. Plus, I realllllly underestimated how fast this movie would go in terms of pacing but like WHOA lol Another movie that's *kinda* like this one is The Fall, with Lee Pace. I can't recommend that one enough - plus, the direction and cinematography are ridiculous.

Rue

@Julian San I'm not being dishonest with myself because I like this film. Not sure why it's necessary to insult people just because they happen to like something you didn't.

Brandon B.

My favourite reaction ever!! I loved that you didn't need to say anything. Just seeing you laugh, cry and react to the film was amazing.`

A few of my favorite tidbits: The entire special effects team on this movie consisted of five people. The white googly eye with black center is the yin to the yang of the black bagel with white center. Evelyn's tax problem is "she confuses her hobbies for businesses." Some of the hobbies mentioned are the jobs Evelyn has in the alternate universes. My favorite throwaway joke: when Waymond describes the eerie feeling created by the bagel, he says: "Your clothes never wear as well the next day. Your hair never falls in quite the same way." His lines are from the song "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days. Later, when Evelyn travels to other universes, specifically 1) the one where she misjumps to her and Waymond discussing the divorce in the car, 2) the world where she's a maid cleaning up the hidden S&M dungeon, and 3) the chef universe, you can hear versions of the song playing in the background with the lyrics or music changed in ways that fit those scenes, which were all rerecorded by the actual guy from Nine Days. Ke Huy Quan, who played Waymond, became famous as a kid playing Short Round and Data in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies. After that, work dried up and he eventually left acting, working behind the scenes doing fight choreography on Jet Li's The One (which coincidentally is also a multiverse story), as well as assisting on a few movies by the famous director Wong Kar-Wai (the scenes in Movies Star Evelyn's universe are stylistically modeled on WKW's In the Mood For Love). When Crazy Rich Asians opened and became a huge hit, he said he loved it but felt heartbroken that he had missed the moment on the new Asian-American renaissance of movie acting, and told his agent to look for scripts. The first one he got was Everything Everywhere All At Once and now he's got an Academy Award (and he got to work with CRA star Michelle Yeoh).

@Julian San, I don’t think people are not being honest with themselves if they enjoyed the film 🤷🏻‍♀️ difference of opinions on films is what makes the entertainment industry so versatile -Sam

I'm gonna make a prequel to this called "One Thing One Place One After Another". XD

I've probably seen this movie about 5 times now and I still get emotional about the ending. Everything about this film is just so well-done and so beautiful. I'm really happy it won a bunch of awards. I don't really care about awards and accolades, since they're usually political in nature and who can run the best press campaign to get voters to vote for their films, but in this case the awards were totally justified. So glad you two enjoyed it, as well.

Brandon B.

Like Julian said, definitely not alone. I personally enjoyed the films nominated for best male performance better than films in the best picture category.. some overlap but, The Whale, Aftersun and The Fablemans where the best in my opinion..

PastaDon

This kind of movie is normally my jam, but I had trouble with it, too. And, I was boggled that Jamie Lee Curtis got an Oscar for her role, which I just took as a silly throw-away character for the lead to play against while watching it myself.

Thomas Yanez

You're not alone. I watched it and think it's incredibly overrated. I've watched lots of quirky movies but this one was so heavy handed and felt pretentious at times. I think more people need to be honest with themselves and accept the fact that this movie gets all the praise because it checks a lot of boxes.

Julian San

Yes !! I Really Looking forward to the Film!! Great that Jamie Lee Curtis won an Oscar !!! Another Great Oscar Winning Movies are, "Kramer vs Kramer" from 1979 (Oscar Dustin Hoffmann and Meryl Streep), "Million Dolla r Baby" from 2004 (Oscar Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank), "Wall Street" from 1987(Oscar for Michael Douglas), "As Good As It Gets" from 1997 (Oscar Jack Nicholson) and "Dancing with Wolves" from 1990 (Oscar Kevin Costner) ... This is a little Oscar List of Films that you not watched on the Channel already;) Hope you feel better soon !!!

Florian Meier

I have to recommend you guys react to Supercop (1992) aka Police Story 3with Michelle Yeoh and Jackie Chan, stunts are awesome and Michelle keeps up with Jackie Chan nearly stealing the show, Technically the 3rd film in Jackies Police Story series but its not dependent on seeing the first two tho that whole series is great and the first is a landmark in martial arts action films

Ken Veader

That's okay! Not everyone will love every movie :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt
