HBO did a miniseries chronicling the Apollo program called “From The Earth To The Moon” and Hanks did the intros for each episode. Fascinating series and the Apollo 13 episode is told from the perspective of the media. A recent documentary on Apollo 11 is also great. I saw it in IMAX and blew me away. Also second the recommendation for Edge of Tomorrow for another Bill Paxton movie.

I'm glad he gave us to final AMAZING supporting performances in EDGE OF TOMORROW and NIGHTCRAWLER in 2014 before he left our dimension.

It's been on cable so often and I've seen it so many times I probably could have just watched just the fuzzy video and known what was going on! It’s such an antithesis to action films where one guy saves the day- it took thousands of people relying on the scientific knowledge and skills – not to take away from the bravery and actions of the crew. Some trivia: Ron Howard's brother, Clint Howard, plays Sy Liebergot, the flight controller who recommends shutting down the fuel cell and ending their chance at landing on the moon. (Clint usually has a small role in all of Ron's movies). Ron's Father, Rance , plays the priest in Marilyn’s house while their watching the events on TV. A lot (if not all) of the weightless scenes are not CGI- they were shot on the KC-135 aircraft, which NASA uses to train their astronauts in weightless conditions. They would get about 25 seconds of weightlessness at a time as the aircraft would fly deep parabolas. That’s probably Bill Paxton’s real vomit ! (Don’t know that for sure though). (Guess Sam won’t be watching Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life anytime soon)! Recommendations: To repeat what many have said here: The Right Stuff. Ed Harris is also in it as John Glenn. For Ron Howard: - Parenthood, - Backdraft. - The Da Vinci Code - From his acting career, American Graffiti. For Tom Hanks: Too many to list, but certainly -Big, -A League of Their Own, - -The Burbs. Some quirkier films: - Charlie Wilson’s War, - The Lady-killers (A Cohen brothers film, remake of a 50’s British comedy) - Cloud Atlas For Bill Paxton: A Simple Plan. Directed by Sam Raimi , who directed the Evil Dead films – quite different from those films, but still very suspenseful For Kevin Bacon, - National Lampoon’s Animal House

It took me a couple of viewings to figure some stuff out. As many fellow patreons before me I'd love to watch your reaction to - The Right Stuff (1983) - First Man (2018) a real tearjerker! - From the Earth to the Moon (1998) HBO miniseries produced by Tom Hanks - that was actually his first movie-made-into-series combo that was later followed by Band of Brothers. What I like about the First Man and Earth to the Moon miniseries is that it focuses more on the astronaut's wives and their mental struggle. I also teared up a little bit when you praised the great late Bill Paxton. He was a national treasure.

For me, the mark of a great historical film is whether it can capture the feelings, suspense, etc. of the events for those who actually lived through them. As a 15 year old (in 1970) and intensely following the U.S. Space Program, I can tell you this movie hit it out of the park. The movie is based on “Lost Moon”, Jim Lovell’s own book detailing the events of Apollo 13. In interviews about the movie, he has said the only time dramatic license was taken was during the back and forth between the three of them in the Lunar Module where it looked like tempers were high. Lovell has said it wasn’t anywhere near as animated as it was portrayed. And yeah, even Marilyn losing her ring, supposedly, happened. But she did find it again. On Apollo I, the main reason the astronauts couldn’t get out is because the hatch was inward-opening. With the build-up of pressure from the fire, no one had the strength to get the door open against the pressure. A bit of trivia, the Navy Captain congratulating Tom Hanks’ character, Jim Lovell, on the deck of the aircraft carrier was in fact, Jim Lovell. "Interstellar" (2014) is a great (fictional, rooted in science) space movie.

That said he has a ton of other great movies in his filmography, my other personal favorites are Parenthood, Willow, The Missing, and one of his first, Gung Ho. Tom Hanks movies: someone already mentioned The 'Burbs and I love that movie! Joe Vs. The Volcano, it's really obscure but I also absolutely love that one. Oh yeah, and The Money Pit, just good ole 80s formula comedy but it hits the spot for entertaining.

I don't think Howard is a bad director, it just seems like for every movie of his I really enjoy there's like five others that are pretty ho-hum. I mean, if I ever had to take a "film direction 101" he'd be a great professor cause he's obviously super competent. I should check out Parenthood again. I saw it a very long time ago (20 years at least) and I remember it being pretty funny.

I highly recommend you guys check out 1998's Armageddon, it was Michael Bay's next film after doing The Rock, and it really cemented his status as a blockbuster director! While it has a much more outrageous plot, it hits some similar beats as Apollo 13, and is all around a really fun flick. Also one of my favorite films.

It's the true story of how a British TV host known for flighty entertainment interviews put together a historical interview with disgraced President Richard Nixon. That actually sounds like a horrible movie as I write this...and yet, I think it's a spectacular movie--and probably my favorite movie by Ron Howard. Just a suggestion... (I also have a soft spot for Parenthood.)

2023-01-17 03:37:19 +0000 UTCIt's very "watchable" but it doesn't do a lot for me, either. I think Ron Howard is just an average director. I guess "safe" would be the best word to describe him. I've heard a lot of people say that he's a very competent director, but he doesn't seem to have his own distinct style which I definitely agree with. I think he's had a couple very good films, but I just don't find his stuff very interesting. He seems to do a ton of historical and biographical films, probably hoping to hit pay dirt like he did with 'A Beautiful Mind'. But he's also said to be a super nice dude which I think is always a big plus.

When times are tough, I watch The Burbs, and hanging out with THOSE characters on THAT street never fails to cheer me up. Oh, and as well as Ron Howard producing it, his dad Rance also appears in a scene. He actually has one of the funniest lines in the film!

Really hilarious movie with Tom Hanks and apparently Howard was a producer on it. Someone mentioned Cast Away.. also Big is a really good one as well. I thought maybe it was on the channel already but I guess not. The Burbs is really hilarious that would be my #1 pick for the next Tom Hanks film.

You guys are so relatable, it's great. Another great Tom Hanks movie you should react to is Philadelphia, assuming you guys haven't seen it. It's one of my favorite movies with him in a leading role.

The audio tapes from Mission control can be heard on YouTube. They were thought lost until someone at NASA found these boxes beneath a stair that held the tapes a few years ago.

2023-01-16 23:18:46 +0000 UTCFrom Earth to the Moon is a great mini series that covers the man space program and it's Apollo 1 episode is amazing. So Apollo 1 was a pressure test with a pure oxygen envrionment and velcro was just invented and the astronauts loved it, so they covered as much space in the ship interior as possible. (The astronauts had a big role in making sure the ship was comfortable to work in). So theres a short. THe pure oxygen makes it worse and velcro is very flammable in those situations. The ship became a bonfire. Now the door. So Gus Grissom on one of the Mercury missions which were solo missions, after splashdown, the explosive bolts on his capsule blew and caused the ship to flood. He escaped but was the capsule was lost. So NASA got rid of explosive bolts which might have saved Gus's life in the fir on Apollo 1.

And there is a great movie on Amazon called "Good Night, Oppy" about the Opportunity robot that spent 15 years on Mars when it was only supposed to last about 3 months.
