The Sopranos Season 3 Episode 11 'Pine Barrens' Full TV Reaction!!

The Sopranos Season 3 Episode 11 'Pine Barrens' Full TV Reaction!!

Comments

"You said yourself I hit him in the head. Fuckin' Rasputin, this guy!" kills me every single time. So glad you both loved this episode. I was worried you'd have been like, "That was way overhyped".

Donna Castellano

YAY!

Elisa Pfau

Mrs. TBR - Paulie ISN'T jealous of Chris getting made, he's just busting his balls. Paulie's jealous of Ralph because he earns more than anyone. Paulie loves Chris but can't stand Ralph.

Dominic Matich

The funniest part about it is that Chris and Pauly are totally serious. If they were just joking around it wouldn't be as funny. And the actors deliver the lines in such a way that you know the characters are serious,

Ed R

yeah "mix it with the relish" had me rolling. The funny thing about Pauly is that he's serious. That's what makes Pauly so funny, he's a really odd dude.

Ed R

For some reason I thought this episode came in a later season but its definitely one of my favorites and one of the most memorable. Pauly and Chris are total bumbling idiots. Its hilarious to see them out of their element and basically almost die from their own stupidity. I like how they left the car thing totally up in the air. Was it stolen? Did the Russian take it? Did they even leave it where they thought they left it, it could still be out there. Did they really shoot the guy? If they hit him in the head where was all the blood? This episode has an urban legend quality to it that's pretty cool. The kind of story that you'd tell people but no one would believe.

Ed R

Actually, it really doesn't, Sam.

This episode is probably the series' most famous, and judging by the volume of comments in such a short time, it struck a chord with this Patreon community, so I won’t belabor points already made in earlier comments. It is certainly a great episode, though I think I might like the next one, Amour Fou, better. And, I can never see London Broil on a menu and not think about how surprisingly aerodynamic it is. (BTW, Sopranos writer Terence Winter, who penned this episode, actually had a girlfriend throw a steak at him once. He then got in an elevator and realized everyone could smell it on him.) A quick note on Paulie re the post episode discussion. I think Paulie was always this way, but he’s just so funny (often unintentionally) that we were initially too charmed by the humor to realize it. He’s still the funniest character, it’s just we’ve spent more time with him now, and have gotten to see the full extent of his nature. One thing that gets lost in the brilliance of this episode is how it’s an allegory for how people from North Jersey see South Jersey (where the Pine Barrens are). North Jersey (NYC metro area) looks down on South Jersey (Philadelphia metro area) for being less sophisticated, more rural and even just sorta moderately unsettling. I have family members who won’t go south of Trenton for any reason, except if they’re going to Atlantic City. Being a Philly buy with North Jersey roots, it’s always astonishing on a sociological level to watch people who the rest of the country would likely (and correctly) see as basically indistinguishable from one another make such judgments about their neighbors. It’s also especially funny when you realize people from NYC see people from North Jersey exactly the way people from North Jersey see South Jersey. Shit rolls downhill, I guess.

note to self: don't smash things on the heads of Russian commandos

Yes, Sam. It was an awesome reaction and fun to watch the episode again. I had forgotten about the subplots with Meadow and Gloria, which were very heavy. The Gloria storyline reminds me of Fatal Attraction, an 80s movie with Michael Douglas and Glen Close about an adulterous affair. That movie would be great for a reaction, especially thirty five or so years after its release. Cheers!

Robert Boyd

A lot of great theories that I agree with! And we love Bobby haha -Sam

Yeah as much as I love Pine Barrens I love the next one more. At first I was bummed I have to wait another week for it, but I took comfort in the opinion that it actually goes better with the finale.

daron85

Great episode. I think this episode sets up some important storylines, but I agree with Daniel that I think the fate of the Russian commando is like a distraction and we'll probably never get real closure for that storyline. Jackie is a complete idiot, but I'm not 100% sure Meadow will say anything to Tony because she knows what could happen to Jackie and I don't think she's that petty or vindictive...yet. I don't think Tony would kill Jackie if Meadow did tell him. He might get his ass kicked, but Tony knows that killing Jackie over that would have a huge negative impact on the family. I do think Jackie would always be an outsider to Tony and likely ruin any chance he had to succeed in the family business. The countdown has started with Gloria. If she doesn't try to kill herself, I think she's so unstable that she is going to do something really stupid which will get her hurt or put Tony at risk in some way. Junior tried to have Tony killed in season 1, but he appears to have accepted his position and actually respects Tony and thinks he is a good boss. Poor Bobby, everyone breaks his balls, but he seems like one of the only characters who still has most of his soul left.

Jeffrey Miller

“Interior decorator” and “his house looked like shit” are the funniest lines on television for me. It makes me feel all warm and happy every time I think about it lol

PIG

Future boy, how could I forget that banger🤣🤣. Then Paulie getting all serious "Don't you leave me out here!" Realizing Chris could actually take off on him. Paulie and Chris the dynamic duo!

flynhwn

I think my favourite line in this episode is: "I'll leave you here, you one-shoed cocksucker!"

Future Boy

I hope they do The Wire next as well.

Tim Raths

I love how the Russian killing 16 people single handily doesn't bother Chris. It's the fact that he was an "interior decorator" and "his house looked like shit." He can't get over. That line kills me every time. The other one is Chris telling Paulie "you know how fast i am. ill leave you in the fucken dust!"

flynhwn

This episode was directed by Steve Buscemi and is widely regarded as one of the greatest episodes in the history of television. One of my favs.

esclad

The Sopranos and The Wire are my 2 favourite shows, by a long way. Third place is so far back it doesn't even matter what it is.

Future Boy

It's definitely a lot of fun, but I agree. I think University and Amour Fou are stronger episodes overall, but that's because Season 3 is so strong all around. Pine Barrens happens to be the most famous Sopranos episode, and it' s not hard to see why.

Sol95

My favorite episode. Can’t wait to watch your reaction!

Robert Boyd

Mix it with the relish

Kevin Charley

I can't see ketchup packets without thinking about this episode.

Ellie Miller

Historically, I’ve been a tough sell for committing to ANY series, and even more, a TV adaptation or spin-off of a much loved feature film, but the Fargo series is a rare and excellent exception. I was so entrenched that I refused to watch it for a couple of years. But, man…they did an outstanding job. It’s just different enough, yet it carries little hints of similarity. The first three seasons are classics, but I think the fourth can be safely avoided without harming the whole experience. They REALLY screwed up by shifting away from everything that was essential to the beginning concept. I think they were trying too hard to keep it “fresh”, and as a result gave away the essence. But the first three deserve a special place of honor. And I think it would make a PERFECT series for a reaction. But don’t let my (or others) estimation of the fourth and final season deflect the series from consideration. All of the seasons are structured as individual stories with different casts, so it’s not like a lackluster end season detracts from a “whole story”.

David Wilkins

I was looking forward to the Amour Fou reaction more than Pine Barrens ...oh well 2 eps next week!

David Murray

I was hoping they would notice that. I think they missed it.

Michael Chavira

Christopher: “We should of stopped by Roy Rogers!” Paulie: “And I should of f****ed Dale Evans but I didn’t!” Dale Evans was the wife of Roy Rogers….😂

JG

If there is only one series you must watch after the Sopranos It is freaking FARGO!!!

SGato!

When Tony tells Paulie that he has mayonnaise on his chin, this was a subtle way of telling the viewer that he's now watching him closely.

JG

Agreed. Love Pine Barrens, but objectively speaking, it doesn't come close to being the best episode of the series. Definitely one of the funniest though.

JG

season 4 & 5 are my favorite seasons but the entire series is magnificent. Honestly you can't find writing this good on TV anymore...maybe The Wire and Breaking Bad...which you guys should def watch The Wire next.

Ghost Crusaders

Definitely a classic and very unique episode, but believe it or not, I think there are some even better episodes on the way. Looking forward to this.

Marcus Cato

Agreed. Amour Fou is one of the best episodes of the Sopranos. Army of One is also pretty good, and goes together very well with Amour Fou as a set.

Marcus Cato

The scene where Tony was laughing at Bobby, off camera the actor playing Bobby tied a prop dildo around his waist, had it hanging and then walked into the scene wearing it,, Tony's laughing was his shock at seeing it.. The director kept that intial take of Tony's laughing in the show.. LOL It was talked about in an interview a few years ago.. see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9KmfkbFJIw

Robert Smith

Judging from your reaction during the opening credits, you might have noticed that this episode was directed by Steve Buscemi.

David Wilkins

when the theme plays & Sam bobs her head it makes me lol every time.

Ghost Crusaders

That's a strange reason to hate a great episode of TV. When Tony and Bobby are driving to pick up Chris and Paulie, they're not on a road and not in a car. They're in a rig with a rear projector. When Gloria steps onto the boat at the start of the episode, it cuts to a set, not the inside of a boat. It's all fake. It's a TV show.

Future Boy

The creator of the Sopranos said that he put these side stories in and does not resolve them to show that the main story of the life of the Sopranos is bigger than the side stories. Remember this is a crime family and there is always something happening, just because you don't see a side character for an episode or two doesn't mean they are not up to something.

Beau Mont

I love this episode - definitely the funniest of the whole series. I've been waiting for this reaction for a long time, and it didn't disappoint. But unlike many other fans of the show, it's not my favourite episode. There are a handful of episodes that beat it for me (mostly from the final 2 seasons)). Actually, for me, another episode that beats it is the very next one you'll watch. It's a fantastic episode - a very strange mix of subtle and crazy. So now I have ANOTHER week where I'm wishing time away!

Future Boy

as someone who lives by the pine barrens, I hate this episode, wasn't even filmed in new jersey let alone the pine barrens, but thats hollywood for ya.

Superbowl champions

This is my favorite episode. I had that remote, an overpriced piece made by Sony. Not worth the events that transpired after it was broken. Lol

Richard

That's how we know you're definitely reading our comments. Pine Barrens is a Top 3 episode.

Donna Castellano

Can’t believe we’re here! I’m gonna enjoy this as much as any movie reaction so far😁

Shehab Dawoud

No complaints here! Pine Barrens is a classic. Allowing more time for certain episodes is very legitimate. I have a feeling you’ll want to do this for a number of episodes later in the series, and I hope you do.

David Wilkins

Solo Sopranos episode this week, so we could focus all our time on this episode! -Sam
