Boogie Nights (1997) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

It's so great to have the music with your reactions.....a selling point for a Patreon subscriber.

richard wilkinson

Really enjoyed your reaction to this film. You guys are always great but this film is just too full of craziness. Also, that ending with the Dirk's Diggler was agreat. I think everyone had that same reaction. lul

JayWantsACat

My favorite PTA movie after There Will Be Blood.

Drzergberg

One of the best movies ever made, on all fronts. PTA really had a grasp on what makes a family, even a makeshift family.

Andrew Manford

This is such a great movie. Whoever thought a movie about porn could be executed with such precision, sheer honesty without getting gratuitous, and sensitivity. Great soundtrack, too.

Jeff Mills

Really fantastic reaction, guys! I hope you can get to Magnolia some day.

Jim Frykman

Only thing that bums me out a little bit is seeing very few other people celebrating Inherent Vice, which in my opinion is PTA's masterpiece. Still, nice to see the support for magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love. I'm in the minority here but this is one of my least-favorite PTAs because it's so dark and I find the characters less interesting compared to his other movies, but it's still a very good movie and if you love this then it's all uphill from here. I'm of course still crossing my fingers for a chronological Coens run but maybe PTA is a little more feasible because he's got a shorter filmography. That said, the Coens' Hudsucker Proxy is a NYE movie, as well as When Harry Met Sally -- recommendations for next year.

Tyler Foster

Also requesting Punk Drunk Love from Anderson to be voted on a poll. One of my favorite films from him is actually There Will Be Blood but you've already seen that.

PIG

Another show/movie I would have never watched if it wasn't for this channel, and I'm glad I did. You have a great base of fans for suggestions.

PIG

I love this movie. It's so easy to get into. I don't think I've seen a lot of PTA movies. I think that last one I saw was MAGNOLIA which I loved. I don't know why I never kept up with him because I do like his movies including HARD EIGHT. Not the biggest Marky Mark fan, but he does have moments like in THE OTHER GUYS and THREE KINGS. Oh and you guys watching Dirk Diggler is classic. I thought someone was pulling out your guys' toenails with tweezers.

Philip Davetas

You guys should put Saturday Night Fever on a list for people to vote.

Ghost Crusaders

I'm going to get a big laugh when I see the "length" of the "block out" bar at the end scene of the movie..🤣

Robert Smith

P.S. Paul Thomas Anderson was/is heavily influenced by director Robert Altman, who sorta perfected the overlapping dialogue, multi character movie. I would suggest watching Short Cuts, which came out 4 years prior to BN, as it follows about a dozen characters through Los Angeles, some of them interact with each other, some of them don’t. It’s excellent and the cast is stacked. Other Altman movies with the same structure are Nashville and McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

Robert Boyd

Great reaction to a great movie! If you're looking for another fantastic PTA movie to watch, I recommend Phantom Thread above all others. It's so fantastic that Daniel Day-Lewis retired from acting afterwards; he chose to go out on the highest note possible! Not to take away from other PTA movies, though. Magnolia has some excellent performances of its own, and Inherent Vice is responsible for some of my hardest movie laughs in recent memory (Doc and Bigfoot's interactions are priceless).

Christopher B.

The reason Dirk couldn't get it up is because Coke usually makes guys impotent after doing enough of it -- your heart is beating so fast that it requires more blood and it doesn't rush into the dick as easily. I found this out the hard way in my twenties, no pun intended

Dominic Matich

Rock Star is great. Wasn’t it inspired by a true story with the band Judas Priest?

Donna Castellano

I would buy Dirks record. His music career could have been its own movie.

Shaun2342!

13 inches of enjoyment, HA!

Steve Mercier

Trivia Question: How many times did Daniel say "Cock" during this:)

Mark M

Get we get some Magnolia up in here?

Yay, thank you, Renee! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I loved your reaction to this film because I could see how invested in the characters you both were. I had the same reaction when I first seen it 25 years ago. It’s an interesting movie because you care about these people who would be perceived as “low-life’s” in general. And because of some of the decisions they make, they probably are. The success of the film, I think, is that it is never patronizing toward them. It just is. The cast is phenomenal. Burt Reynolds is incredible. He was a huge movie star in the mid 70s through the early 80s, being one of the highest paid actors of that era. Two films starring Reynolds you might want to check out are Deliverance and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (A musical!) Happy New Year’s!

Robert Boyd

I love Adam Sandler in his early movies but found PDL to be PTA's worst movie

Ken Veader

Daniel, good luck editing this one for YT. The entire movie is filled with music.....Really good music tho

Mr. Chumpus

That, and I think market pressures would have forced him anyway. Floyd was completely right and there would have been no way to survive staying with film.

Jeffrey Miller

My favorite Mark Wahlberg movies are "Rock Star" and "The Big Hit". I think the movie "Fear" was his first really big movie role, and within a year or two he did "Boogie Nights" and "The Big Hit", and it has been nothing but gold since.

Vwlss Nvwls

So agree.! One of Tom Cruise's best roles. Many of the stars in this are in Magnolia. If you liked this you'll love it.

Baldielox

Wonderland is definitely worth a watch.

Ed R

Which is actually a pretty good movie.

Ed R

That scene with the firecrackers was so well done. I was so tense I just wanted someone to start shooting already to get the scene over with. :D

Vwlss Nvwls

I loved Burt Reynolds character, and how he was like a father or anchor to every one. The Amazon trivia said that Burt Reynolds didn't like this movie after he saw the rough cut and distanced himself from it, and even fired his agent for getting him the job. Too bad, because he was awesome.

Vwlss Nvwls

When you said that Jack was at least embracing video tape, I think you failed to realize that he had no choice after the Colonel was put in prison.

Vwlss Nvwls

Tom Cruise watched Boogie Nights and loved it so much he called PT Anderson to congratulate him. Invited him over to the Eyes Wide Shut set, asked him to write a part for him for Magnolia (1999). Cruise turned out one of his best ever performances.

Jonathan Patrick

I was laughing when you were talking about the music not making it to YouTube! :D LOL that's the least of your worries here! :D

Vwlss Nvwls

If I had to recommend just ONE scene from any movie that builds anxiety to a perfect crescendo, it would be the botched robbery. Everything from the intermittent firecrackers going off, Alfred Molina's frenetic acting, the side flipping of the cassette tape, Todd's low pitched threat (most people were probably screaming at this point telling him to shut up and just walk away, hahaha) Just a total masterclass on how to build tension. Perfect scene to a perfect movie (chef's kiss) It really doesn't get any better than Boogie Nights.... 10/10. Fun fact: The botched robbery scene is loosely based on late porn star, John Holmes and his accomplices robbing famous LA nightclub owner, Eddie Nash during a home invasion. Won't spoil the details, as there's a movie that documents the entire crime called "Wonderland" (2003), which I highly recommend you react to at some point. Great reaction guys! :)

JG

I think this movie has one of the greatest, darkest uses of foreshadowing. Literally the moment the 80s hit there's a tragedy by double murder suicide. It's like the 70s was everyone's comfort zone then everything turned shitty for everyone in the 80s. Nobody was ready for the 80s.

daron85

As a PTA fanboy, I'd recommend following up in this order. (I believe you've only seen this and There Will Be Blood). Punch Drunk Love (you need a palate cleanser before Magnolia) Magnolia (this one is a lot, and you'll be exhausted, but it's so good) Hard Eight (first film, more traditional, another palate cleanser) The Master (things start getting challenging here) Phantom Thread (you could easily stop after this) Licorice Pizza Inherent Vice

Ron Moses

P.T. Anderson casted John C Reiley in Boogie Nights bc of his character in Casualties of War (1989)

Jonathan Patrick

Yes! It's movies like this that make me happy that I subscribed to your patreon. This is a full watch type of movie. I get to see your reaction to every single scene and shot of this masterpiece. Plus with the plethora of amazing songs throughout!

daron85

Yeah, those long-take tracking shots through the club and the house are very reminiscent of Goodfellas.

Brandon B.

I LOVE Punch Drunk Love. One of my all-time favorite movies. Oddly enough, I don't really like Adam Sandler much, but he's fantastic in PDL.

Brandon B.

After all these years this still ranks as one of the most DIFFERENT movies in the history of big box office film. And P.T. Anderson himself ranks as not only unique, but among the best. Hopefully you’ll get around to ‘Magnolia’, ‘Punch-Drunk Love’, and ‘The Master’. All of them are utterly unique, and works of art.

David Wilkins

That's a Q! That's supposed to be a G. Oh, man. No, no!

Ellie Miller

Man, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this. Fun fact: Leonardo Dicapro was originally offered to play Dirk Diggler. He spent months contemplating and debating whether to do it or not since he loved the script and wanted to work with PTA. In the end, he decided to go with Titanic. I think Mark killed it in "Boogie" but I would've loved to see Leo's version!!! Oh well.. You guys should check out PTA's "Magnolia" with Tom Cruise (my personal fav), "Punch-Drunk Love" with Adam Sandler, "The Master" with Joaquin Phoenix. IMO PTA's wonderful choreography and direction in a lot of his films is so reminiscent to filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick's style. But in Boogie Nights I saw a lot of influence from Scorsese. From its extended opening shot, which winds its way into and around a nightclub, it brings to mind Goodfellas and its famous long take winding through the Copacabana club scene. Similarly, its last shot, which shows the main character giving himself an extended pep talk in the mirror, is a clear homage to Raging Bull. Can't wait for A Bronx Tale!!

Joe Lazarus

Oh, fuck yes...

Steve Mercier

Ya can't make us wait long for Magnolia.

Shaun2342!

Magnolia is a must, but also PTA's film Punch Drunk Love; it's oddly underrated but has one of Adam Sandler's best performances

Odd Thomas

by the way, the dvd release of this was a huge part of its continued success - after box office. the director commentary and extras are phenomenal. Strongly recommend.

Michael Kang-Beats

The scene in Alfred Molina's house is one of history's all-time most well-done anxiety-inducing scenes.

Michael Kang-Beats

If you ever watch the director commentary, Mark Wahlberg tells a great story about how he broke his dick one time, in graphic detail.

Jason Dolan

I would absolutely recommend the 1986 animated classic, Transformers: The Movie, for the channel! My favorite animated movie ever, as well as one of the greatest scores and soundtracks!

David Crabtree

I'm with you on the Magnolia love! I've loved PTA since Boogie Nights came out and actually got to meet William H Macy on the set of a film called "The Cooler" and got to tell him how much I loved both BN and Magnolia. I saw the first showing of Magnolia back in 99 and couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks. I don't recommend it to everyone, but I think if TBR and Sam like BN enough it would be worth the 3-hour watch for them.

Mike Miner

Fun fact: Julianne Moore and I were both born at the same hospital! Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, NC This is going to be a great way to start my long weekend once I get home! I feel like Boogie Nights takes one of the most basic and common plots, "the rise and fall" and tells it in the most perfect way. Everything from the characters to the cinematography is excellent.

Jeffrey Miller

When Dirk was laying down his vocal track I didn't hear a shoutout to Transformers The Movie (1986)... Is it safe to assume you guys haven't seen it? Not an official recommendation for the channel - I'm not sure how appropriate it would be - but it IS the greatest animated movie of all time. lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDAoJIJ2ljU

Sergeant Pepper

Something tells me that the YouTube edit will feature many uses of the blackout bar that we see in all the strip club scenes in the Sopranos. 😂

Marcus Cato

They even reference Boogie Nights in his scene with Dean Pelton! 😂

Marcus Cato

Magnolia also by Paul Thomas Anderson, with Tom Cruise

Jonathan Patrick

+2

Florian Meier

+1 for Smokey and the bandit.

Robert C

You guys gotta react to Smokey and the Bandit, classic and probably the Quintessential Burt Reynolds film

Ken Veader

Magnolia next please! One of the best 90s films, period.

Odd Thomas

Lol I'm glad you made that joke because I wanted to

Jeffrey Miller

"Full length" reaction had a different meaning with this one

brismithejedi

Really looking forward for this Reaction!! What a Perfect Week with Rain Man and Boogie Nights !!! You Need to Check Out More Burt Reynolds Movies !!! "Deliverance" from 1972 and "The Longest Yard" from 1974, "Gator" from 1976 and of Course "Smokey and The Bandit" from 1977 and "Smokey and The Bandit 2" from 1980

Florian Meier

The club guy in the opening is Luis Guzman. You know him from his Oscar winning role in IMDB. He also graduated from Greendale Community College.

Jason Dolan

You guys need to check out the hilarious comedy Requiem for a Dream

Jason Dolan

So Dirk Diggler is loosely based on porn star John Holmes and the drug dealer at the house is based on Eddie Nash. There's a little, lesser known film called Wonderland. It explores the Wonderland murders and the involvement of John Holmes and Eddie Nash in those murders.

Andrew

Dirks journey is so well represented symbolically through his car. It stars with the poster of the Stingray on his wall as he dreams of being something special, when Dirk climbs the latter of success, he gets his dream car. You see as his life loses control and deteriorates, his car deteriorates as well, Great film, PTA's best imo

Ken Veader

You have a lot of fun reactions coming up this week :) I know what my evening will be spent with today
