Rain Man (1988) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Saw this at the cinema 🎥 with my then girlfriend. Funny thing Tom Cruise was filming Rain Man the same time as Cocktail. In Cocktail in most of the film his hair is cut short. But in some scenes his hair is a bit longer the way he has it in Rain Man. One scene in a hotel lobby his hair is long as skips onto the elevator. Then when he gets up stairs to the apartment his hair is cut short. One scene edited filmed a different times!

So in 1987 Barry Levinson put out Good Morning, Vietnam and the next year followed it with Rain Man. Talk about being on a roll

Everyone hating Cruise for this movie is a testament of his acting skills.

Mississippi Burning is an outstanding film. Y’all ought to add that to the list, Sam and Dan. Gene Hackman is one of my favorite actors EVER and he kills it in that movie. Great cast, based on a true story. Also stars Willem DaFoe and the ever amazing Frances McDormand.

All I can say about this movie is it has my favorite version of “Iko Iko”. The one by the Belle Stars. Outside of being a late diagnosis autistic, I was never a big fan of this movie. It’s not because of the autistic aspect or anything like that. Listening to Dustin Hoffman speak on his portrayal of Raymond, he cared about making a character, not just someone only considered “disabled” at the time. It’s I can’t stand Tom Cruise and that he’s playing the character he does in this, makes it even more insufferable to sit through. Oh, I did tho, because I love y’alls reactions and you did not disappoint with this one. But yeah. Never was a favorite, outside of Hoffman actually caring and that version of “Iko Iko”.

Who was more hated: Charlie Babbitt by Sam or Charles'the Duke' Grodin from Midnight Run by Daniel?

The Color of Money is another movie where Tom Cruise's character is kind of jerk, not as much as in rain man but but still an extremally cocky and frustrating character.

Agreed, Color of Money. Very under the radar.

In addition to some of the other Dustin Hoffman movies mentioned, I'd also like to add Tootsie (1982) for which he won Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Also, Tootsie's director, Sydney Pollack, won Best Director and Best Picture (w/Dick Richards).

Definite thumbs up for "Rounders" - great drama/gambling flick, Ed Norton and Matt Damon at the top of their game. This movie basically kicked off the whole craze of amateur/professional poker in the early 2000's

I was a teenager in the 80s. I can assure you that 'autism' was a foreign concept to us. We didn't even have the phrase "Mentally disabled". Anyone who acted like that was simply considered 'retarded'. A catch phrase for anyone that was a bit slow or couldn't pay attention.
This movie was the first time many of us were introduced to autism. And, of course, we all figured that people with autism were magical math geniuses with photographic memories.
It was very early in the understanding of mental issues.

The roses dialog was amazingly similar. "I got the rosebuds. Definitely. I got the rosebuds. Definitely got the rosebuds"

Daniel's had so much practice blocking out the nudity in The Sopranos that I think he's ready to tackle Eyed Wide Shut now! My favourite Cruise film, my favourite Kubrick film. I'd love to see what you guys think of it sometime in 2023!

Oh Yes !!! I love this film!!! Great Reaction !!! You have to watch more of Dustin Hoffmann !!! Such a Brilliant Actor !! "Kramer vs Kramer" from 1979 with Meryl Streep is a Classic and he won also an Oscar for this Performance !!! "Marathon Man" from 1976 is also brilliant, "The Graduate" from 1967 and "Papillon" from 1973 with Steve MqQueen

Even if you don't count, playing "basic strategy" still works. I don't actually enjoy gambling, but I LOVE Blackjack. Well I used to, haven't played in a while now, long story lol
That reminds me, you should watch "Rounders", if you haven't already, it's a great movie about poker, Matt Damon, Edward Norton, it's pretty cool.

I thought it was interesting that Charlie and Ray had some similarities. There were times in the movie where Charlie would repeat himself, especially when he was angry or arguing. He'd often interrupt people. His girlfriend was super frustrated with him because he wouldn't talk to her which is often what Charlie was frustrated with Ray about (not responding). Charlie was very self absorbed, again ironic because he tells the nurse that Ray "lives in is own world." I'm not saying that Charlie was autistic or anything, just that I wonder if there was some self reflection going on with his frustration. Maybe even getting a little taste of what other people feel being in a relationship with him. One things for sure, this was the first time Charlie had to take care of someone other than himself.

I can tell you that I understand where Charlie was coming from at the beginning, because stress can change you in ways you don't want or like, and don't always see it happening.
I had a falling out with my father and didn't speak with him again for 9 years, as well as moving 1000 miles from everyone I knew. It took me 9 years to notice how chaotic my own life was, and what an a-hole I had become. As soon as I did I reconciled with my father and did what I could to fix what I could in my own life. I hate that it ever happened, but it's not always easy to escape your own head.

A fun reaction for sure, it turned around as good as it possibly could have, it was an insurmountable position at the half way point, so the fact that Cruise was even able to somewhat turn it around, was definitely a testament to his acting and performance

Honestly, how amazing would it be to get a sequel to Rain Main with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. Will probably never happened but I'd love to revisit these men - like if Charlie had a strained relationship with his son and Raymond helped him. So many possibilities. I'd love to see another cross country American tour with those two, and maybe like Timothee Chalamet as Cruise's son. Could be something.

Yay, the fact that Sam came back around on Charlie I think is a testimony to the POWER of Tom Cruise's performance - I have this on my top ten list of most underrated performances of all time, along with Cruise's performances in Top Gun, The Color of Money and A Few Good Men. Such a legend.

I remember going to see this in the theater just because of Tom Cruise, and I was so glad I did. This is such a great movie, and I find myself quoting it quite often, the most is "97 X... BAM! The future of Rock 'n' Roll!"

I'm having so much fun watching Sam's fuse - will Charlie EVER win her over? When he teaches Ray to dance, will that finally melt her heart for Charlie? One of Tom Cruise's best and most nuanced performances.

The dealer at that Blackjack table was also a dealer in "Casino".
No counting cards isn't illegal but they do NOT like it. Also, there's a much simpler system than actually memorizing the exact cards the way Ray does, it's just basic math really but you have to do it quickly. The hardest part is to not LOOK like you're counting, so you have to be able to scan and add the cards quickly and casually.

The Color of Money is also a MUST WATCH, but it is a sequel to THE HUSTLER which came out in the early 60s, one of the first 25 year later sequels, which Paul Newman finally won his first Oscar for. Oh, and it is directed by Martin Scorsese. Tom Cruise should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor this year, but it was the same year Top Gun came out and they didn't want Tom to be seen as a supporting actor. Ironically he almost won his first Oscar as a supporting actor for 1999's Magnolia. Can't WAIT for you guys to go on your Tom Cruise journey. Congrats on 100,000. You guys are ALL STARS now.

Classic ❤️ Congrats on the milestone!
A Tom Cruise reaction binge like Stallones would be awesome. He's a great action star but he has a great body of work as a dramatic actor. Probably the last great old school superstar actor. I've named these before but just some to throw out there...
