The Sopranos Season 3 Episode 4 'Employee of the Month' Full TV Reaction!!

The Sopranos Season 3 Episode 4 'Employee of the Month' Full TV Reaction!!

Comments

They just meant the abrupt way the episode ends after Dr Melfi says "no."

Future Boy

I can't rank Sopranos seasons. My answer would never be the same twice. But I do know that I prefer 4 to 1. And 3, 5, and 6 would probably be top 3...in what I order I don't know...

Future Boy

Ah I feel like I remember them talking about him but I didn't remember seeing him. Yeah Tony was not happy seeing him move to NJ! Oh that's interesting! I wonder if we'll see more from the NYC families in the future :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely needed that time in between episodes to decompress, such a heavy episode. The writing on the show is perfect, and it absolutely stayed true to Dr. Melfi. Yikes! I'm glad we had a week in between them! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you so much! Yes, we weren't prepared for that, not that I think you ever could be. Excited for the remainder of the season :) -sam

TBR Schmitt

Yeah, Janice kind of brought that on herself with the leg -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can see why, I definitely wouldn't want to watch it again on a re-watch. I agree, the writing on this show is genius! I hadn't thought about Meadow even thinking about that bringing Noah to the house the first time, but I definitely could see it being intentional at the dorm room. LOL! I didn't even put that together. Oh that's so cool you were nearby! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh cool! Well we have a lot of your favorites left still! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Agreed as much as I want that revenge for her, it was the best decision for her -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Cuts off? Is there something wrong with the video? -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I think it's a contrast to make the scene more shocking. A happy pop song and then BAM you see her reaction to the photo.

PIG

All good :) Completely understand.

PIG

Ah, gotcha. Sorry about the mixup. Thought you were talking about something else. There were people dropping spoilers in another comment section so I thought you were one of them.

JG

Dude. I’m talking about THIS episode when it cuts off. Lol No spoilers. I agree, I don’t like them either.

PIG

S4 is my least favorite too. I dunno if it was affected by having to wait a year and a half between seasons or what. On rewatches tho, I still don't like it as much as every other season.

Donna Castellano

I always wondered if that song was a hint maybe that trash had done it before Melfi, but that victim never reported the attack. Or I could be reading too much into it.

Donna Castellano

???

PIG

Same here. I often don't like these kinds of storylines that much because they often feel manipulative and cheap. I think they walked the line in this episode and saved it by not having Dr. Melfi have the guy killed. Media almost always portrays revenge as positive and cathartic and mistakes are never made. It's like how torture is almost always portrayed as effective.

Jeffrey Miller

As much as I would have loved Jennifer to sick Tony on that POS, I'm glad she didn't. The courage and strength it took for her to internalize that pain and not get vengeance was pretty awesome.

Carlos Hurtado

I would personally rank the seasons: 6B 5 2 1 3 6A 4 But they are all phenomenal seasons of television

Wayne Delaune (cardaderdention)

Just checked on IMDB — you’re right! For some reason, I thought she won that year. But yeah, she absolutely deserved to win.

JG

Robert has the correct answer.

JG

Tough episode. For me the toughest, I guess, because the Melfi assault is the only scene in the series I’ve only watched once, the Sunday night it originally aired. It is, unfortunately, seared into my memory. Never have to see it again. Like I’ve said before, Melfi isn’t always a good therapist, but she is a good person. One of the very few in the show. The writers were genius, however, lightening things with the Janice v Svetlana leg caper B story. Hard to believe both things happened in one episode. I think Meadow absolutely was hoping Tony would show up at the dorm with Carm & AJ, just like I believe she knew what she was doing bringing Noah to their house a few episodes ago. You mean to tell me that a sharp kid like Mead years ago figured out her father was in the mafia but had never picked up on his less than enlightened racial attitudes? Please. Has a character ever been more aptly named than Melfi’s ex husband, Dick La Pena? Forget subtlety, the writers make both his first and last name allusions to what a prick this guys is. Funniest detail in these episodes for me might be the name of the pizzeria where Jackie Jr and Chrissy meet—Ooh-Fa Pizza (which is actually Ralph Piccolo’s Pizza & Pasta, on Union Ave in Paterson, five minutes from where I was born. Decent pie, from what I remember, but the sauce was too sweet for me.).

Robert Livingood

I know you didn't ask me, Matt, but no. The guy who was made with Chrissy is Eugene Pontecorvo. Gigi is the guy who killed Philly Parisi, Patsy's twin brother at the beginning of season 2. Tony would never put a newly made guy directly into the position of captain of a crew, especially his biggest earning crew, the Aprile crew.

Robert Livingood

I would feel somewhat bad for Janice if she wasn't given every chance to just give the the leg back. Even the big Russian dude gave her a last chance to just give back the leg. The whole Dr. Melfi situation is tough. I just won't comment on it for the good of the community.

Jeffrey Miller

JG - is Gigi the one who was with Christopher when they were both made?

Matt DSM

Incredible reactions and discussions. Never disappoints. I had such dread on your behalf as the stairwell scene approached. It was kind of like knowing the box scene was coming at the end of Se7en, but much worse. Next week's episodes are equally excellent. Counting the days!

Future Boy

Edie Falco (Carmela) won the Emmy in 2001 for lead actress. Lorraine Bracco was nominated that year (and in other years) but never won. I think she deserved one.

Future Boy

I hope you guys are ok after watching that scene. It's one of the most powerful endings in the entire show. It wasn't satisfying for the viewers but it stayed true to Melfi's ethics and morals and the show's penchant for giving us something far more substantial than fanservice. On a lighter note, how about Ralphie the role model lol. Episodes 5 & 6 are serious heavy hitters in the series and it's insane how those two and Employee of the Month are all back-to-back-to-back. So jealous you get to experience it for the first time.

Sol95

The New Yorker guy's name is Johnny "Sack" Sacrimoni. He's actually been in a few episodes over the past 2 seasons. He is the underboss (2nd in command) of the Lupertazzi family, which is one of the Five NYC Families in The Sopranos universe. In episode 3, The boss of the family (Carmine Lupertazzi Sr.) was talking to Tony about his therapy at Chris' being made celebration. The Sopranos and Lupertazzis have long standing ties dating back to Tony's father, and some of their rackets are intertwined; most notably in construction. Tony and Johnny Sack are actually good friends, however, there has always been a level of distrust from Tony as he sees Johnny's decision moving to NJ as encroaching on his territory, and thus "sticking his beak in". It's also important to note that while Tony and Johnny are good friends, the Sopranos are widely regarded by the New York families as a "glorifed crew" and not a real Mafia family that should be taken seriously. Tony is well aware of this and is always guarded with what information and opportunities he shares with them.

JG

Very well said. This show does a great job of challenging the moral beliefs of the viewer. I also wanted her to say something to Tony however much I respect her decision not to. Nothing good comes out of getting pulled into Tony's world.

Marcus Cato

In regards to Ralph, Tony passed him over as Captain and gave the position to Gigi instead. Tony finds Gigi more trustworthy and level-headed, despite Ralph being the better earner.

JG

This episode aired a few years after my cousin was SA. And her attacker got out of it because she lived in a small town with a "good old boys" club. I was livid for years about that. It's just lucky I never saw that a**hole walking down the street. Anyway, when this ep sired, my mom had started watching The Sopranos with me, we were both way too into it. We were both telling at Melfi at the end. I understand why she made the decision she made, but still. Hit way too close to home for us.

Donna Castellano

Also how the hell is "Oops!... I did it again" in this episode?

Ellie Miller

The Melfi assault is probably the most brutal and shocking scene that I've ever watched in a TV series, and one that I always fast forward during re-watches. Important to note that Lorraine Bracco also won an Emmy in 2001 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series; mainly due to her acting in this episode. What a performance!

JG

Was concerned for you Sam before watching this one. It's one of the toughest of the series and maybe of all TV.

Ellie Miller

Great breakdown at the end by you both. I was 11 when my family and I watched this episode and the moment that scene came on, my mom just about pulled the cord out of our TV. No Sopranos that week. Fast forward to college when I started the series from the top, I knew what to expect but that didn't lessen the blow when watching it all the way through. I was ready to see her rapist get the f--king treatment from Tony--from anybody. At that time, when I watched the ending, I felt such disappointment at the firm 'no'. I wanted justice for her so much. Now, seeing this ending scene between Dr. Melfi and Tony again today, I realize what I'd really wanted then was a silver bullet solution that simply does not exist in real life. We viewers can get lazy and minimize or forget about a character's trauma once the plot moves on to justice getting served. When I watched this in college, I probably just didn't want to sit with all of the feelings it brought up any longer than I had to, but that just isn't real. Dr. Melfi's pain, rage, dismay and disgust in our joke of a legal system (particularly when it comes to rape victims), was not going to go away by green-lighting her rapist's death. She knew that. In that ending scene, Dr. Melfi was taking back what control and agency she could and prioritizing her healing by not making a decision that would compound her trauma any further. She was prioritizing herself above everyone, including us. I'm pretty certain I wouldn't have her moral strength in that situation, but I respect her decision now in a way I just couldn't years ago. I love also that she says 'no' to us as much as she does Tony at the end--she's challenging us to sit with everything she's going through. Dr. Melfi kept it real for us. Love her character.

Elisa Pfau

yep. i always skip that scene too.

Michael Kang-Beats

The scene with Dr melfi I don't think it was necessary to get the point across because basically what they were trying to say is will Dr melfi ask for Tony's help to catch that piece of s*** who hurt her but she knew if she did that then she would be indebted to Tony and God knows what he would have asked in return as a favor, she'd rather not say anything instead of owing the mob of favor, I think they could have lessened the blow a bit by having the piece of s*** beat the living crap out of her and leave it at that but when they go all the way it's extremely uncomfortable to watch

dieselbeast

There are maybe 5 or 6 scenes in The Sopranos that I skip on rewatches because once was enough. The scene in this episode is the first of them. I won't skip this time because I want to see the whole series with you guys. It's an incredible episode, but really really not fun. I can't wait to devour these 2 reactions later!

Future Boy

As soon as I saw the title of this video I knew exactly which episode this was. It’s a pretty rough episode.
