Drama Film Poll!

Help pick the Drama movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

*We received a ton suggestions on the last polls, but we are trying to keep the poll sizes more reasonable. We have noted all suggestions for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen American History X, A Beautiful Mind, & Catch Me If You Can, so this will only be Sam's first time watching!

Comments

Oh, yeah. Sunset Blvd, The Apartment, Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, Sabrina - all those Billy Wilder masterpieces - are must-sees.

Neal Romanek

Might I suggest " Sunset Boulevard " 1950 Film Noir Classic, with William Holden and Gloria Swanson who btw was a famous Silent movie actress that came out of retirement to do this film.

Glass Hat

Have the Schmitts seen Sicario (2015)?

YoureMrLebowski

its certainly an eye opener if you havent done a deep dive into the jfk assassination.

Brian Sevilla

Amadeus has been my all time favorite film since I was a kid, so I hope it wins some day.

JayWantsACat

Amadeus gets a reference in Last Action Hero. So your watch order would be a bit off... but it doesn't matter, the movie is so gdamn amazing.

Darrem

I realize some of the "older" classics struggle because of voter demographics, but i can always hope The Color Purple sneaks in at some point. Good list though!

ron clint

Feels great to see Dog Day Afternoon holding its own (as of this comment, it's in third place). It may not win this time, but eventually it'll get a first time watch and I can barely wait.

Paul Cox

You should do a new poll with only Amadeus on it. There are some fun movies on this list, but none really compare to it

bosho11

I know it will probably never win a poll like this, but I really hope you watch Dog Day Afternoon, even on your own time and not for the channel. The story is captivating and Pacino and Cazale give some of the best performances in cinema history. It's such a good film.

Brandon B.

They ought to check out the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon too. That's my favorite miniseries HBO has done. I can't count how many times I've watched it.

Donna Castellano

Definitely. I've recommended JFK before here. I hope they get to it ๐Ÿ™ Masterpiece

Jonathan Patrick

good list however Gone Girl the best of the bunch for me

Nick Sneddon

With tomorrow being the 59th anniversary of President Kennedyโ€™s assassination, I thought I should recommend Oliver Stoneโ€™s โ€œJFKโ€ (1991). If youโ€™ve never seen it, you really should. Donโ€™t wait for next year.

Nick of Time

It's fun, but just ignore the part about it being based on a true story. Yes, it is based on a guy's autobiography, but said autobiography has been thoroughly debunked by multiple sources, including references to actual court, military and prison records.

Thomas Yanez

It's a shame Amadeus is tough on reactions for all of that beautiful music.

Erwin Quiachon

Here, here.

Neal Romanek

Interesting. I'm not a fan of the longer cut. The original release was as perfect as a movie could get. But some people like the longer version.

Neal Romanek

Oh, yeah. Gotta see the right stuff.

Neal Romanek

Yes, more Spike Lee please.

Neal Romanek

And The Color Purple is so great too, but I'm thinking has very little chance. Along with Empire Of The Sun, one of Spielberg's underappreciated masterpieces.

Neal Romanek

Yeowch, that's a lot of great movies. I would give my backing to The Graduate since it's such a timeless classic, but it's actually more a black comedy than a drama. Going with Amadeus which is one of the best of the movies anywhere. Beware though, I think it's hard to get hold of the original version. The version around mostly now is an extended cut that has some extra scenes that I think slow it down and sour it a bit.

Neal Romanek

Thanks, I did not see the film myself until the late `70`s on tv. I first heard of them through the Georgie Fame song on T.O.T.Pops in the late `60`s. By the way thanks for suggesting those tv Series, it`s better for more & more people to know of them.

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

Apollo 13 is so good.

Armchair Rizzard

Ooh, that's some heavyweight stuff right there. I love the Aronofsky anthology there, but I wonder why you've left out mother! ๐Ÿค”

David Lengyel

Thanks!

David Lengyel

I always thought "American History X" (1998) and "Malcolm X" (1992) should be watched back to back. They are both based on true stories depicting main characters with very similar character arcs that are the flip side of the same coin.

Mr. Writhms

Iโ€™d suggest โ€˜Of Mice and Menโ€™(1992) starring John Malkovich and Gary Sinise, for the next drama poll.

Mark M

It looks like Apollo 13 is leading the pack, as I guess it probably should. Hard to beat the talent in front of and behind the camera on that one! And a true story about an event in American history that united us, is something we can all use in a very divided time. Speaking of American history, that film, while being VERY different from Apollo 13, and a tough watch, is also a must see. Hands down, Edward Norton's best performance of all time

John Sutherland

if Apollo 13 wins and you guys like it, you'll definitely like First Man and All the Right Stuff

Ed R

Dramas Legends of the Fall (1994) Meet Joe Black (1998) Steel Magnolias (1989) Philadelphia (1993) Tom Hanks The Last Samurai (2004) Mystic River (2003)

Jonathan Patrick

Amazed how low in the ranking The Color Purple is. It's probably the best film on this list (imo).

Jonathan Patrick

You need to watch them all

John Mulbury

Amadeus is the most classy movie here by far but Dog Day Afternoon is great. Can't believe Apollo 13 is winning

Ken Veader

Ahh! Too many good choices!

Nismo

LMAO! Pure art

Aaron Barlow

So many great choices. But I have to go with CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. Such a great holiday movie for lonely people.

Philip Davetas

Great poll, Sam & Dan!

Toc

DEFINITELY "Bonnie And Clyde", that is a HUGE hole in the reaction universe. Fantastic, super groundbreaking movie. That and "The Graduate" are practically the dividing line where old Hollywood ends and "New Hollywood" begins. Great choice.

Toc

Agreed, but happy to see it on the poll!

Toc

I couldn't choose between "A Time to Kill," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Apollo 13." All these movies have something to recommend them, but these three are really special. I will suggest (as I think I've done before) two dramas that are excellent character studies: "A Perfect World" (1993), starring Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Laura Dern, and the greatest performance by a child actor I've ever seen. And/or "An Unfinished Life" (2005) equally good, starring Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and Jennifer Lopez (!). Do 'em both! You'll love them!

William 1611

May I suggest the 1975 Robert Redford film Three Days of the Condor, it is a Thriller/Spy movie. The 1967 Warren Beatty film Bonnie & Clyde it is a Drama/Crime movie. The 1968 Steve McQueen film The Thomas Crown Affair it is a Crime/Thriller movie. They all also star Faye Dunaway.

Long-time Sci-Fi Enthusiast

@Paul Cox sad but true.

Marcus Cato

Reminds me of this gem https://youtu.be/EO9ctKn_Mdc

mikethemotormouth

React to this masterpiece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxxmOWa_UpM

Aaron Barlow

If I may, I'd like to thank you for at least including The Color Purple at a time that's not Black History Month. I jump around among quite a few reaction channels, and I can probably count on my fingers the number of films with predominantly Black casts that I've seen reactions to. It's a really egregious blind spot in the reactorsphere and I'd love to see it change, and I'd ESPECIALLY love to see all the Black cinema not be sheepishly crammed in to February each year, and even more than that I'd love to see Black cinema beyond slavery and civil rights tales get watched. There's a whole universe of the Black experience that doesn't pivot on slavery and racist violence.

Paul Cox

Oh, yes! I had been waiting for your next drama poll just to dump all of these beauties that I've made a list of for a while. If I have already suggested any of these before just ignore them. Except the first one because it's a MUST! Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) - Both Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won the Oscar for this amazing film. It was Frances' second Oscar, her first was for Fargo, which I know you guys loved. ๐Ÿ˜„ Steel Magnolias (1989) The Road (2009) The Impossible (2012) Trainspotting (1996) Lincoln (2012) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) The Fountain (2006) Requiem For A Dream (2000) Black Swan (2010) Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Domino

Huh, maybe I underestimated Apollo 13... which was probably dumb, because it's Tom Hanks + space danger, duh!

Paul Cox

Yes, Eyes Wide Shut for Christmas!

Future Boy

They just need to go to the Bilderberg afterparty.

Aaron Barlow

@Marcus Cato I think they'd really have a good time diving deep on Mitchum the way they have on Clint Eastwood, Stallone, and Schwarzenegger. But I also know youtube is unforgiving when it comes to low engagement, and not enough drive-by viewers would click on most Robert Mitchum titles.

Paul Cox

https://letterboxd.com/tbr_schmitt/

Paul Cox

Still haven't seen the original tbh. De Niro is my Max Cady and maybe I don't want nothing to change that XD

Shehab Dawoud

That's a great suggestion. And speaking of Mitchum, his performance in Night of the Hunter really creeps me out.

Marcus Cato

Same, brother. Same..

Shehab Dawoud

Sorry, no. The Right Stuff was the bomb. Apollo 13 was huge.

Paul Cox

Sleepers (1996) is an EPIC drama. Jason Patrick, Brad Pitt, Robert Deniro, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman, and more great actors than I can remember

ShadowVessel ฯ€

Another vintage drama/suspense I'd love to see you guys react to is the original CAPE FEAR from 1962. It is truly menacing! Scorsese's remake is fine too (De Niro's "Max Cady" is a beast), but there's something deeply terrifying behind Robert Mitchum's take that you'll never stop thinking about.

Paul Cox

The Graduate is usually considered a comedy, although, I could see it being categorized as a drama.

Michael Buhl

Dead Poets' Society is a great Robin Williams films, but don't expect to walk away smiling. A lot of good movies on this list, with Apollo 13 being the one I rewatch most often.

Kurt Yost

Gone Girl is one of my top 10 favorite films ever, so I'm gonna be really bummed out when it doesn't win. Hope you make an executive decision to watch it one day. I love it when I can get a married couple's reaction to a film like this or Eyes Wide Shut. Gone Girl is more of a psychological thriller/mystery than a drama, though. If it doesn't win, I'm hoping American History X can pull through. A very tough film to sit through, but nevertheless, a film everyone needs to see at some point.

Shehab Dawoud

Dead Poets Society is a great choice even though it doesn't appear on track to win. And TBR and Sam seem to really like Robin Williams.

Marcus Cato

Cool Hand Luke(1967)

christopher brown

A beautiful mind is a great film, it should have more votes

Aaron Barlow

I have a soft spot for Dog Day because I live in the neighborhood where it was shot. I think itโ€™s a very good movie, but it wouldnโ€™t be what Iโ€™d pick first from this list. However, Iโ€™m totally with you on The Right Stuff. It is one of my all-time favorite films. It seems like itโ€™s gonna be a stuffy historical epic, but theyโ€™ll be blown away by how wildly entertaining it is.

Jarrod Hornbeck

Dammit now I have that Falco song in my head.

Aaron Barlow

I don't expect Apollo 13 to get through this field, but when you eventually screen it make sure to follow it up with (or maybe even watch first) The Right Stuff. I never realized it was a box office bomb because I grew up in a NASA family and watched it all the time, but I think its reputation has improved considerably since the time of release. It's a proper epic.

Paul Cox

Dog Day Afternoon, great Al Pacino acting and a true story

Lana Gorgeous

American History X is one of the most important movies to ever watch. And probably Edward Norton's greatest performance. Unforgettable movie. I hope it wins.

EdmanXERO

I recommend the 3 hour AMADEUS director's cut

Jason Dolan

If you're going Fincher way, please consider The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Zodiac. Apologies if it was on the channel already. Btw. do you guys have Letterboxd so we can see what have you reacted to so far?

David Lengyel

Amadeus is one of the greatest films of all-time, with one of the all-time great lead performances. That should win. What do I have to do to get another Thriller poll so they can do โ€˜Blow Outโ€™??

Jarrod Hornbeck

Will this be Dog Day's time to shine?? ๐Ÿคž

Paul Cox

Catch Me If You Can is such a great movie. The only Leo and Tom Hanks pair up I can think of. So great. Hope it wins.
