Also the movie starts with “Glorifying” the Spartan eugenics slash “full term abortion” project. If one still thinks those mofos are actually enlightened just because they verbally bleat about freedom, it’s on them.

While we’re at it: full cut Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (unless the hosts also didn’t watch Man Of Steel either.)

Sparta was already miles behind on Freedom and Democracy away from the likes of Athens. They are far behind in Greece let alone other places in other time periods. If people come away from this movie going “F*** yeah Spartan Democracy just like the gold standard USA democracy!!!” for real, it’s on them. Their parents, their church communities, their schools already failed them. 🤷🏻♂️

It wasn't just "boylovers" he said philosophers. I saw that comment as more of a joke/insult than a statement of historical fact, though I do remember learning that homosexuality was prevalent in Athens.
Anyone who was as hypermasculine as the Spartans are in this movie would see philosophers as weak and worthy of mocking.
What struck me as odd was the over the top supernatural stuff. I remember people talking about this movie and the Spartans but the whole thing about this huge wolf that's more like the size of a bear and these huge rhinos and elephants. I'm pretty sure that no rhinos are that big. But I suppose maybe it's supposed to be symbolic of one exaggerating ones accomplishments.
I didn't take issue with it, it was just a bit shocking. I didn't expect it to have such supernatural type elements.

I'm especially impressed by the training workout these actors put themselves through. Is like the old movie adage: "Pain is temporary, film is forever". https://youtu.be/rM8GLp1baUc

There is some dispute about Sparta's "boy loving" (I only avoid more accurate terms because I don't know what kind of filters Patreon has). I am certain that it is only a matter of degree. Any claim that "boy loving" didn't happen or was rare in a society where children were taken away from their parents and systematically abused is absurd on its face.
The men have complete power over the boys. The boys are separated from those who would most want to protect them. The boys are indoctrinated to obey those in power. It's a child abuser's fantasy come true.

I may be wrong, but if my memory serves I think the Spartan men were more likely to bed each other as a form of bond, whereas the Athenian men would take young boys as apprentices and bugger them.

I'm with you and I'm glad I'm not alone in finding the way the Spartans are portrayed as a bit dubious. If someone wants to omit some of the negative aspects of a historical figure/society/etc. I get that. I don't think it's the greatest thing to do, but I can see it being done in certain instances. But when you insert into the dialogue Leonidas taking shots at the Athenians for being "boy lovers" and ridiculing Xerxes for having slaves, things which Sparta very much did as well, you are perpetuating a falsehood because you're strongly insinuating that Sparta did not do those things.

Oh I know the Spartans are supposed to be the "good guys". I just find them incredibly unappealing as protagonists and honestly don't know why Xerxes is supposed to be much worse.
When Leonidas called the Athenians "boy lovers" I rolled my eyes because Spartan were also "boy lovers". Also, Leonidas criticizes Xerxes for having slaves when the Spartans had TONS of slaves, called Helots. The Helots so outnumbered the Spartans that they had to be kept in line with fear a brutality including the murder of Helots for basically any reason.
So yeah, I was team Xerxes all the way.

I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about this movie, like Gladiator. I wouldn’t mind these movies so much, if people were more aware of history. Spartans were not squeaky clean and Persian society was not this backward society like this movie suggests, and one of their best generals during this particular war, was a woman. As a history buff, it saddens me that people admire the accomplishments of ancient societies based on fictions and where those societies were “located”. Sparta, Greece, and Rome created amazing things that don’t need alteration to make them interesting, but so did Persia, Egypt, Nubia, China, India, and so many others. Poetic license is one thing, but outright fantasies can lead to some dangerous beliefs about the world, which I have encountered nearly every day. Sorry if this is a different opinion to most, but it’s one I felt I had to share. Still enjoyed the watch along, though. You guys do make these films enjoyable.

I recommend watching the "making of" featurettes for the movie, especially the one(s) showing the scenes they pulled from the graphic novel, it's amazing how well they matched it! Like the scene of the Persian messenger rearing his horse, holding the slain king's skulls, that's an image in the GN. I also remember them talking about creating all the stylized blood spatter with CGI.

Wow! I'm so happy that you both can agree this movie is excellent! I knew that you wouldn't hate the movie but I'm yeah, I'm surprised by how much you liked it. This movie was made so well, it was well liked by most who watched it. My ex wife wasn't into it as well! hahaha, I remember watching this with her and she was hyped like you were at the end. xD Made me happy to see that sort of reaction again! :)
I've watched this movie well over 25 times and I'm still really enjoying each watch. Very happy that I got to watch this again with you both!

Something to remember about this movie. It's all told by a man to a Spartan army on the eve of battle to hype them up and make them angry. Explains the over-the top stuff. In reality, it was the Olympic Games going on that kept Sparta from fully mobilizing. But this battle did happen. 300 Spartan and 700 Thebans. The archaelogy at the battle sight does show that a lot of arrows were fired there. The persian numbers are guessed at, but the Persian Empire spent years preparing for this invasion. They even built floating bridges to save themselves a year of marching. Twenty years before, they tried an amphibious invasion and landed at Marathon. The Atheninans drove them into the sea. A messenger ran back from Marathon to Athens to tell them the news and every year after that, the Athenians ran the Marathon to honor it and we run it to this day, the same distance, all across the world. 2500 years.
