Gladiator (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Gladiator (2000) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

i was stationed in Rota, Spain from 98-02 and they had the ONLY Drive In Theater on a military base in the WORLD and i saw it there!!! Pretty great to see it like that. it was awesome!!! i have rewatched this movie many times and even your reaction to it. Its one of my all-time favorite movies.

Matthew Maxon

I watched this in theaters back when this came out, probably a few weeks into it being out. I was 12 at the time, I believe. Incredibly violent but also incredibly moving. I don't see Commodus as a son that deserves any love or pity. He may've had a rough life but that doesn't allow his behavior. YOU SAID THE HE WAS LIKE HOMELANDER! xD That right there is evidence enough, I feel. Fuck Commodus. He didn't deserve love from anyone.

Logan Kerlee

100% 👍. The Insider is Crowes and Manns best. Gladiator was definitely a n apology award for Insider.

Jonathan Patrick

The Next Three Days is great.

Reed James

Crowe is very good in this movie -- no disrespect to his performance here intended -- but the Academy Awards have a long and storied history of "apology Oscars," awarded a year or two after someone lost a deserved statue, and I think this is one of those cases, making up for his loss for The Insider the year before. One of my favorite journalism dramas of all time, also featuring a phenomenal performance by Al Pacino, and a career best for Michael Mann -- I love Heat but The Insider holds a special place in my heart. Glad to see scanning the above comments that I'm not alone. Beyond that, I also recommend Cinderella Man as another very good Crowe performance, not to mention he's in the incredible ensemble of Evil Dead director Sam Raimi's awesome Western The Quick and the Dead. Finally, if you wanted to get micro-obscure, there's the 1991 movie Proof with Hugo Weaving that I just love. If you check out The Insider, you can also move onto All the President's Men, and the lesser-known Shattered Glass.

Tyler Foster

Very good movie.

Tyler Foster

Gladiator is one my favorite movies! Glad you enjoyed it. Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix knock it out of the park. I love the story so much. I know Ridley Scott is working on making a sequel about Lucius and they are using the same actor to play him. Will be interesting if they go through with making it. Another hidden gem of a movie I think you guys would enjoy is The Water Diviner. One of Russell Crowe’s more recent films and it’s great. He also directed it!

Nolan schwab

They should of let the tigers feed on Commidus at the end.

Vwlss Nvwls

I originally watched this one when I was in a bad period of my life, and pretty much everything I did was just passing time while I wallowed in my own self pity. It was good to finally, actually watch this, because I did not remember a thing about it. And I am glad to have watched along with another of your great reactions.

Vwlss Nvwls

@ TBR Schmitt, "Berry Gordy`s `The Last Dragon'(1985)!!!"

Bridget

It was confidential...jk

Guston Zimasheen

100% that's what happened. It was a make up award. Same with Whoopie Goldberg in Ghost but deserved it for The Color Purple

Jonathan Patrick

Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) may very well be Ridley Scott's best movie he's done, which is doubly impressive considering its lead is Orlando Bloom, who is a fine actor but not really one that has the most range.

Christopher B.

There are days where I still feel that Russel Crowe's oscar win for Gladiator was the voters making up for the fact that he wasn't even nominated for his role in The Insider. A fantastic movie that is riveting from the first to last second.

Christopher B.

lol...i watched Dog Soldiers the other day for Halloween. Underground UK cult classic that film!

Alex

I mean, it's not the biggest deal, I'd rather stream it than buy it. I just have to note the runtime at the start and go on a time calculator website to subtract the time left from the runtime. It just takes a minute and that's usually only for when I closed a window and they're completely desynced. I've become an expert at quickly pausing one stream or the other to get them together lol.

Jeffrey Miller

Another recommendation for ‘The Insider’, and it really helps illustrate Russell Crowe’s range as an actor. It doesn’t seem that a story about the tobacco industry lawsuit would hold one’s attention, but that would be wrong.

David Wilkins

At least that's how I interpret it after Commodus's sinister "busy little bee" monologue and her crying.

Aaron Barlow

I can't believe the joker killed Dumbledore.

Aaron Barlow

It's so hard for me to choose my greatest film. It's between 'The Matrix', 'The Shawshank redemption', 'Forrest Gump' and 'Gladiator'. 'The last Samurai' is up there too. PS: You guys should watch 'Dog Soldiers', it's like 'Aliens' with a supernatural twist.

Aaron Barlow

Like Daniel for me it was way better the second time.

Alex

Thank you, Alex! Glad you got to give it a re-visit! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ah! I wasn't sure, but that makes sense -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh no way! I mean he's a great villain to emulate! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks for the recommendations! We'd definitely love to explore more Joaquin Phoenix! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can see why! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh cool! We've never been to Rome but it is high up on our list for potential vacation spots! Rome is definitely on our TV list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Daniel's seen it but I have not! It is on the list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

No way... -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you, David! I agree, it was fantastic! We actually did watch LA Confidential on the channel, just completely forgot Russell Crowe was in it! I hope you check it out because it was one of my favorite reactions we've done :) Thanks for the recommendation! Rome is definitely on our list -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Lol we didn't mention it, but Hans is pretty hard not to recognize! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We'll have to check it out! Thank you for the recommendation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Hahaha oh no! I'm glad you got to see the end of it, but I understand high schoolers prioritizing the makeout sesh lol Oh wow, thanks for letting us know that! Sometimes we don't have a choice where we stream, but other times we do, so we'll keep this in mind :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh awesome! Thank you for the recommendation! Neither of us have seen that or heard of it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Right in the heart! :( Thank you for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes!! Best description! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ah you're right!! How could we forget him in LA Confidential! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks for the recommendation! -sam

TBR Schmitt

Daniel's seen it but I have not! It is on our list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww that's okay! Not every movie is for everyone :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I didn't really remember this movie much and wondered if I'd like it. Boy I really didn't remember anything except I did remember Commodus. I hated that guy, the image of him turning his thumb down was the only thing I remembered about this movie. Great movie and reaction.

Alex

Haven't seen Caligula, but all I've heard about the movie and everything I've read about that man sure points to a wild one indeed

Samuel Bruce

Commodus found out about the plan because Lucilla told him after Commodus threatened her son.

Aaron Barlow

Derek Jacobi is one of my favourite actors, he played Senator Gracchus.

Aaron Barlow

Funny how you compared them to the Lannisters as Lucilla was like Cercei and Commodus actually WAS a King slayer lol. RIP Dumbledore.

Aaron Barlow

Jack Gleeson who played King Joffery on Game of Thrones was so inspired by Joaquin Phoenix’s performance in Gladiator that he wanted to portray Joffery the same way on Game of Thrones. When you watch that show you can definitely see the similarities there.

Tim Raths

Everyone in the comments talking about Russell Crowe when Joaquin Phoenix (apart from Richard Harris, obviously) is absolutely incredible in this and all of his movies. Since he's one of my all time favorite actors, here's a quick Joaquin Phoenix recommendation drive-by! We Own the Night (2007) The Master (2012) Her (2013) You Were Never Really Here (2017) Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot (2018) The Sisters Brothers (2018) Also excited to see him again under Ridley's direction later this year in Napoleon! Okay, now I'm off to see this reaction. 🍿🥤😄

Domino

One of the greatest films ever made. In my top 3 for sure.

Aaron Barlow

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." - one of the most bad ass lines ever delivered on screen. And the look on Commodus' face lol I love ancient history, especially Rome; and the city, I've been there a few times, I even slept on the streets under the statues of the Caesars one time when I didn't have enough to pay for a room. The air itself felt like it had memory, such a vibe. That's why I have to recommend the HBO show "ROME", if you haven't seen it. It's only 2 seasons for one thing, so pretty quick for you guys to get through, but it's also AWESOME! I think you'd love it. If you do watch it you may get the feeling that the second season was rushed, it was. They found out they weren't getting renewed for further seasons, so they had to rush the conclusion. Problem was it was expensive. The positive thing came out of it was that the same people who made the show learned from the experience, they learned how to cut corners budget wise, and they took those lessons and went on to make Game Of Thrones. You'll see a lot of the same actors in both shows as well as the same names in the credits.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Another great Russell Crowe movie is American Gangster. it also stars Denzel Washington and Josh Brolin

Carlos Hurtado

Caligula. Now there was a wild movie.

Donna Castellano

A great example of a film making a seemingly dull subject very compelling!

Jeffrey Miller

If you want another great Russell Crowe movie (also starring Al Pacino) directed by Michael Mann who did Heat, The Insider is definitely worth watching. Russell Crowe and Al Pacino absolutely kill their roles.

Brandon B.

In plays, if a character needed to die, they'd get a convicted prisoner and put him on stage and kill him for real. No need for fake blood in theater in those days.

Jason Dolan

Eva Green is great in that film. Bloom was a weak lead for me though, should have got Crowe 🤣

Alex

Not sure actually, i'll check it out and see if i can notice a difference

Alex

Another great reaction! I’ve enjoyed this one several times, but not too much to enjoy sharing the experience again with you two. The film has such a rich pedigree. So much talent flowing into one of Ridley’s best. And the setting is fantastic. Being a member of a ruling family in Rome was a treacherous, murderous, and incestuous business. Though the story is fiction, it’s an antiseptic rendition of that world. So far as Russell Crowe, you MUST see ‘L. A. Confidential’ if you haven’t already. And if you find the setting of Ancient Rome interesting, you should check out the HBO series ‘Rome’. Unfortunately, due to high cost and other factors it lasted only two seasons. You could sort of view it as a long mini-series. But it is the most historically accurate rendering of that time and place, that we’ve been blessed with.

David Wilkins

You seen the Directors cut?

Samuel Bruce

I enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven, i watched it again not too long ago. I'm very partial to swords and sandals though. Don't think it was the best of films for the average punter though.

Alex

I just started, I hope there no mention of pirates music. If there is. Same composer but Gladiator was first

TinCan Cosmanaut

There is a select list of movies that had me utterly captivated whilst watching and that left and long and lasting impression on me, The Last Samurai is on that list, hopefully one or both of them have not seen it and it is on their list

Duncan

Great movie, even though mostly fictional in a historical perspective except for a few people like Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. This is just a watered down version of what Commodus was, usually gets ranked 1st or 2nd for worst emperors in the Roman empire, usually going against Caligula and Nero. His death was very unceremonious and worth a look at. Now for a movie recommendation, I know some people despise it for its inaccuracies and the theatrical cut being awful but Kingdom of Heaven, which was directed by Ridley Scott as well, the Directors cut is amazing and it has an amazing cast lead by Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Edward Norton and Eva Green. It is set during the crusades near the end of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and rise of Saladin the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria.

Samuel Bruce

I first saw this with my high school girlfriend at a second-run theater (are those still a thing?) but we left early to go make out in her van. I eventually saw all of it. It's a pretty fun movie. Also, I hate Netflix because they don't give you a specific progress time and it makes it hard to sync the movie and the reaction if something goes wrong.

Jeffrey Miller

A perfect example of a movie making seemingly boring material compelling.

Jeffrey Miller

I know, they just ended by saying they hadn’t really seen Russell Crowe in much other than Master and Commander and I just wanted to remind them, yeah they had. 😎

Warren H

They watched LA Confidential a while back.

Tim Raths

A Ridley Scott movie I would recommend is Matchstick Men with Nicolas Cage and Sam Rockwell as con men. So underrated and one of Scott's best imo

Odd Thomas

I can't wait to find out of they were indeed entertained.

Grand Moff Slackin'

Sam "at this point I think he should just go home" 😳😟 Me knowing what awaited him at home 😪😥😓😭 As for Russell Crowe, "A Beautiful Mind 2001" is stunning and "The Next Three Days 2010" is a thrilling ride from start to finish

Duncan

Ah, the perfect fusion of big production action extravaganza and heart. Everyone brings their A-game on this one. Good shit.

Steve Mercier

Daniel said the run time was about 2:35, right in line with the Theatrical version.

Miles E Coburn

Pro tip: listen to Daniel before he starts playback as he always mentions the source material. If it's streaming service, it's a theatrical cut (ie. streaming services usually offer only the theatrical cut).

David Lengyel

Thanks, it's hard to tell because they edit out the end credits.

RX2904

By the length of the video it looks like they watched the theatrical cut.

Tim Raths

Is this the extended cut or theatrical?

RX2904

I, on the other hand, am TOTALLY in step with the majority on this movie, and am glad you guys enjoyed it. 😁. And of course, Russell Crow in LA Confidential shouldn’t be forgotten. 🙂

Warren H

Yes The Last Samurai 👍

Jonathan Patrick

The Insider (1999) Directed by Michael Mann Russell Crowe, AL Pacino Its a masterpiece

Jonathan Patrick

Great movie! I hope you two watch The Last Samurai one day. One of the few movies that got me teary-eyed at the end. Also one of the best soundtracks ever! Composed by Hans Zimmer who also did Gladiator.

Nismo

I almost always watch the full reactions, but this is one of those movies where I'm out of step with the majority - I just don't enjoy it. I'll wait for the YouTube edit to at least see how y'all liked it.
