Dirty Harry (1971) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Dirty Harry (1971) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Classic. Bullitt told a 60s audience what was to come. And it was Dirty Harry and The French Connection. Then the Seven-Ups!

Backlog Andy M.

No wonder Jim loves to rubber face impersonate Clint as Harry so much e.g. Bruce Almighty

David W.

Great reaction. Some other genres Clint was in: "Where Eagles Dare"- action war, "Paint Your Wagon"-musical, "Play Misty For Me"-suspense, "Every Which Way But Loose"-comedy.

Brian McNally

The Dead Pool was always my favourite; it's just so 80s over the top. And it has an early part for Jim Carrey!

Odd Thomas

I would love for you guys to keep going with Dirty Harry. Also, for Eastwood playing a very different take on a cop, there is "The Gauntlet" (directed by Eastwood).

Thomas Yanez

"It would have been cooler if his head blew up!" LOL, you are a blast, man. And, hopefully, not a gun owner. :)

Thomas Yanez

Yes definitely continue with the Dirty Harry films, Magnum Force is my favorite out of all of them and has the highest body count. I will say that if there is one negative about this first movie it is the night scenes because they really take away from what you're supposed to be focusing on when you can't see a damn thing. I do get a laugh at how the San Francisco of the era was portrayed at the time. Also I've had this theory for many years that Harry Callahan is just a reincarnation of "The Man With No Name" but instead of the old west it's just modern day San Francisco and he's a cop instead of the lone drifter which would make sense with y'all's idea of Harry's lone wolf personality.

bro that scream that dude lets out after taking the knife in the leg had me absolutely rolling. Such a weird but memorable moment lol

Magnum Force is the quintessential Dirty Harry. Harry always Carrie’s three speed loaders in his jacket pocket. Chico and the killer played in Cobra with Stallone. Chico was the partner and the killer played the uptight police commander

Jason Mangen

More Eastwood movies to check out: Kelly's Heroes, The Outlaw Josie Wales, Pale Rider, In the Line of Fire, Two Mules for Sister Sarah, The Dead Pool, The Bridges of Madison County, Million Dollar Baby

I WISH we could watch Zodiac for the first time! Love that movie! -Sam

I noticed the film but had no idea that it was a Clint Eastwood film! What a fun little easter egg -Sam

Looks like we're watching them all! We loved it! So much fun! -Sam

Great reactions, Dan and Sam! Something that sticks out to me is his tonal inflections when he asks "Well, do ya? Punk?" With the first one, he's calm, measured, almost lackadaisical. Whereas with his speech to Scorpio his voice is dripping with contempt, with a tone of contempt. More than anything, when he says, "Punk", he's almost begging him to make a move to the gun. And playing into Scorpio's need to prove himself above Callahan, he knew he would make a move to the gun. Yeah, continuing with the series would probably be interesting for you. Although in my opinion, the strongest are the first and second. The series relies on a formula (no-nonsense cop saddled with some sort of Diversity/Minority partner and they take down the bad guys) that is pretty satisfying with the exception of the fourth, "Sudden Impact". That movie, I believe, is a production Eastwood undertook as a vehicle for his then significant other, Sondra Locke. You'll understand when you see it. "Magnum Force" (1973) "The Enforcer" (1976) "Sudden Impact" (1983) "The Dead Pool" (1988)

Miles E Coburn

College Boy Chico Gonzalez later played Poppie on Seinfeld. Andy Robinson reminds me of Chucky / Charles Lee Ray

Mr. Chumpus

Haven’t watched this one since way back in the day, so it was fun getting a refresher with you guys.

David Wilkins

I remember watching first run. I've always wished that at the end he told the guy "you have the right to remain silent." Not much of a spoiler but they always give him partners.

As a kid I always enjoyed "Every Which Way But Loose" and the sequel "Any Which Way You Can". As an adult a list of some favorites are "Space Cowboys", "In the Line of Fire", "Heartbreak Ridge", "Million Dollar Baby", "Gran Torino", "Absolute Power"... this list could go on forever, because Clint Eastwood always makes movies that are enjoyable.

I have seen just about everything Clint Eastwood has been in, and I can only think of one dud with Burt Reynolds called "City Heat", and at the time even it was fun because the two of them were such big action stars. So if you decide to do an Eastwood catalogue, you won't go wrong.

I first saw these movies when I was a kid in the '80s or 90s and just thought they were great fun, their context and importance in pop culture lost on me, But this movie was a giant hit when it came out in '71, though it was also controversial and immediately politicized. The early seventies was a tense time in the US (not so unlike now) and the role of police was being reevaluated (Miranda warnings during arrests were only five years old). I won't give anything away, but the next installment in the franchise, Magnum Force, is a rather thoughtful response to some of the criticism directed at this first film. Here's hoping it gets a watch. Loved this reaction!

Good call on The Dead Pool. It seems like it has kind of.a bad rap, but I've always liked it. In fact, I like it better than The Enforcer and Sudden Impact.

VivendoBem

You guys have made my day

Guston Zimasheen

One of my favorite movies. The role that Clint Eastwood was born to play (though Frank Sinatra was originally wanted for the role). And you guys are spot on about Andy Robinson; he was a fantastic villain. Unfortunately, the only strong criticism I have of the sequels is they never had a villain as good as Scorpio. I hope you guys will continue the Dirty Harry and Clint Eastwood journey. You will not be disappointed.

Mitchell Smilie

In regards to Andy Robinson, Clint Eastwood cast him in this after seeing him perform in an off-Broadway play in New York. Andy (Actually Andrew Robinson later in his career) said in several interviews that when this film came out, he was constantly threatened by people and had to change his phone number several times, It's kind of funny too, cause he is a very outspoken pacifist. Basically the exact opposite of this role. Great reaction guys.!

Baldielox

~Really enjoyed this reaction! Please continue the "Dirty Harry" movies. The next 2 movies are just as good, if not better. The last 2 movies down grade a little (in my opinion) but are definitely worth a watch. I really like how the ending of this movie had a stand-off with guns. It's like Eastwood couldn't shake his Western roots. πŸ™‚

Mr. Writhms

By popular demand it looks like Dan and Sam are going to have to watch the other four films as well. Magnum Force (1973) The Enforcer (1976) Sudden Impact (1983) The Dead Pool (1988)

Tim Raths

Fun fact: at the end of Unforgiven the film is dedicated to Sergio and Don. That refers, of course, to Sergio Leone (director of the Man With No Name trilogy) and Don Siegel (who directed Eastwood in Dirty Harry and Escape From Alcatraz).

Steven Montano

And the villians are all Great in every Dirty Harry Films ... It would be a fantastic Choice to Follow Stallone through the huge selection of Eastwood classics ..Hope you do my personal Favorite "Play Misty For Me" from 1971

Florian Meier

That's right, and also Liam Neeson had on of his first ropes in Dead Pool

Florian Meier

You should definitely watch all of the DIRTY HARRY movies - it's a lot of fun this series. And the final installment, THE DEAD POOL, is one of Jim Carrey's first movies. And he is playing a role that is not his usual goofiness which is really fun.

Jason Dolan

I forget if you have scene ZODIAC but that's who inspired the killer in this movie. It is good that you're watching this first I think.

Jason Dolan

Haven't seen this movie in forever, but just noticed that in the bank scene at the beginning there was a movie marquee showing Play Misty For Me, one of Clint Eastwood's movies.

Opie Wan
