I think Tony knew Sil would react that way and that’s why he did that. Especially since Christopher told him not to mess with Sil if he was having a bad night.

2022-10-31 22:35:05 +0000 UTCAlong with Ade, maybe (who is certainly an innocent, in a strange way), I’ve long maintained that Dr. Melfi is one of the only fundamentally decent people in the show, BUT she is often not that great a therapist. Tony is that rollercoaster for her, the thrill ride in an otherwise quiet somewhat lonely, conventional life. I also think part of her fascination with Tony is a metaphor for the odd dynamic of how the vast, vast majority of Italian Americans are good, law abiding citizens who resent the guilt by association with which the mafia taints the whole community, but also in some perverse, deep down way (deep enough that most of us don’t like to admit it) sort of gets a kick out of that same association.

The moment it ended I bought seasons 1 and 2 on DVD, binged them in a week, and started waiting for season 3 with everyone else. This season is paced perfectly. Every episode is better than the one before it. I can't wait for the next 2!

Some in the past have thought that the episodes where characters flirt with show business were irrelevant meandering of story. But that has been a fairly common desire in the mob, and not just since The Godfather. Even Bugsy Siegel had a screen test in Hollywood back in the 40’s or 50’s.
