2022-10-30 00:28:56 +0000 UTCHere is how I see it. Everything Verbal said about the killing on the boat happened, but it was not him watching it happen... it was him doing it. And why he was caught was so the police would not be looking for Verbal Kent. Kyzer likely did not know anyone survived, or that they could identify him, until he was picked up by Kobyashi at the end. So he let himself get caught so that he could walk free, and not worry about being seen again. However, when he finds out there is another that has seen him, he will kill that guy and then disappear forever.

We know the guys were on the boat 6 weeks later and they died there. We really don't know much beyond that for sure, including what/how/why they were actually there.

And the laughter in the lineup was real because Del Toro kept joking around and using the weird accent he chose to use for his character.

Since the opening shows you where Keaton is, and part of the conversation with Keyser, the climactic scene where Kujan is trying to convince Verbal that Keaton was Keyser doesn't work at all. Ideally, the scene would be played entirely from the wide shots of the boat, many seen from behind the boxes, and the dialog can't be heard. Otherwise, Kujan's interpretation has Keaton shooting Keaton, which makes no sense.

I saw this in the theater when it came out in 1995, shortly before I went and saw Se7en. Based on his in roles those two films, I was convinced that Kevin Spacey was, in fact, the antichrist. ;D All kidding aside, this is a terrific film, and probably my favorite performance from both Byrne and Pollack, as well. And man, Benicio WAS young in this!

But aside from Kevin Spacey's amazing and well-deserved Oscar-winning performance, I've always felt this movie was a one-trick pony with its twist ending. Don't get me wrong, I think the twist ending is one of the all-time great endings and reveals. But majority of the rest of the movie, save for Spacey's performance, just doesn't do it for me on repeat viewings. Great reaction though!

2022-10-26 06:20:38 +0000 UTCAt the beginning, the San Pedro police guy told Kujan that Verbal had been arrested for a second degree misdemeanor weapons possession charge. Verbal had the immunity for everything else that went down at the pier, either an accessory or just straight out. Nothing of those charges he got immunity for extended at all to Keyser Soze. "Kobayashi" must've definitely set up the persona of Verbal Kint to make his existence all the more believable. I've seen this movie multiple times since it hit video in what, 95? I'm still unsure how much of the story he was telling Kujan was even legit.
