Rosemary's Baby (1968) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Rosemary's Baby (1968) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

RomPol then becomes the We’re The Millers meme: YOU GUYS GET TO TWEAK BOOKS UPON FILM ADAPTATIONS?!

David W.

Fun fact: RomPol put out this movie and people praised him about how closely he stuck to the book “even though you didn’t have to.”

David W.

@BRT This! 💯

Domino

Great to watch this with you. It's an incredible film. Definitely a bizarre downward spiral throughout but it's also a masterpiece of film making and filled with very interesting actors playing very interesting characters. Many of the cast members are familiar faces cast against type which really compounds the surreal nature of the film. Ruth Gordon won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Minnie and you should really catch some of her other films where she has played some very memorable roles. I'm in complete agreement about Guy Woodhouse being one of the worst villains in filmdom. John Cassavetes doesn't have many staring roles to his credit. I knew him mostly from his television appearances but he was also a very talented director. The man at the phone booth was William Castle who produced the film and is making a cameo in the shot. He directed a film with Joan Crawford called "Straightjacket" which is one of my favorite lurid shocker films. Another great Mia Farrow film is "See No Evil". I originally saw it on television as a kid and it really impressed me. Just last week watched it again for the first time since then and really enjoyed it. She also had memorable roles in The Great Gatsby, Death on the Nile, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days and many others.

BRT

@Ken Veader, Polanski is only one component out of literally hundreds of people involved in making a film. If you're going to adopt the philosophy that any film project that a criminal or bad person has ever been involved with is tainted and must be flushed, then you might as well flush everything, which would unfortunately include all the work of the people who have done nothing wrong. Of course it's your choice though to cancel as you choose.

BRT

The Tenant is a major mind f*ck. Haven't seen it in many years but I'm tempted to give it another go.

BRT

That's a winner!

BRT

@Future Boy, well made film and Barbara Hershy is great in it, but it's not a good recomend for the Schmitts. Not everything is for everyone ;)

BRT

I meant the characters in the movie. At various times, they show both Rosemary or her husband sitting in a chair placed right in front of the TV, just a couple of feet away from the screen.

Thomas Yanez

Hmm, i actually always thought they looked incredibly comfortably. The only couple that I think looks more comforable is The Perfect Mix, and they are leaning back on a couch with a blankie. What I do find odd is no munchies. Am I just missing it?? Very suspicious. 🤔🤨

YoureMrLebowski

I'll second Children of Men (2009). I barely remember it, but I remeber it was really good.

YoureMrLebowski

That's just like, your opinion, man.

Domino

Hell no, how you gonna support any movies from the guy after the acts he's committed? There's too many good films and filmmakers out there to waste time on that creep

Ken Veader

I have a suggestion for a future science fiction film and that film would be 'Children of Men' (2006). Not only is it one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, it's in my personal top three of any film I've seen. It takes place in the near future where the entire world has become infertile with the last child being born about eighteen years prior. The world is marching towards extinction. Why I think this film is great: 1. The cinematography is excellent and was nominated for an Academy Award. There are some amazing shots with some where you want to find out how they actually did them. 2. Clive Owen gives an incredible performance as Theo, the protagonist. Julianne Moore does a great job as well. Fun fact: We were both born at the same hospital. 3. This film depicts what is probably the most realistic and plausible dystopia of any film I can think of. The world building done just through the cinematography and things happening in the background is so damn good.

Jeffrey Miller

You

Paul Spacone

Yeaaaaaah. I rewatched this with you two and remembered why I haven't watched it in like 20 years lol

Rue

"She hasn't been hurt? She was sexually assaulted by Satan and tortured for 9 months." LMFAO!

Ghost Crusaders

A major second for The Pianist, when you’re in the mode for a war themed or Holocaust themed movie. Arguably his best single work, it’s based upon the story of a real person, but some of the events are derived from Polanski’s own experiences during the war. It was most certainly very personal for him. Another great one from his later career is The Ghost Writer, when you’re in the mood for mystery and suspense, though it’s often described as a political thriller. I think it’s one of his best, and one of the best films of the past 20 or so years, where that mix of genres is concerned.

David Wilkins

Love The Burbs, it is one of my go-to movies for a relaxing rainy day Sunday ☔

Duncan

@Domino, IKR? Much as I find The Entity too hard to watch, I have to say, I love the female character. She's portrayed with unbelievable strength of spirit. And the actress did a fantastic job.

Raven Dark

Also The Entity is based on a real story, which makes it even more disturbing.

Domino

I'm not sure why some are acting like you guys didn't think it was a good film when you literally said the movie is incredible. As Sam said, the point of the movie is to make you uncomfortable and that is why this movie succeeds in being a HORROR film. Absolutely loved your reaction, as always! You always have the best insights. ❤️ P.S. Also, I recommend to you guys my favorite Roman Polanski film: The Pianist (2002)

Domino

Yes!! The Burbs is one of my Favorite Tom Hanks!!!

Florian Meier

I can confirm this. I don't want to start a talk about it, but yeah, explaining to people that I'm not a "liberal" but not conservative can be confusing to some.

Jeffrey Miller

Polanski films are an acquired taste. His most approachable film i think is Chinatown. But since you already watched Rosemarys Baby, you might as well complete his Tenement trilogy, with Repulsion and The Tenant (psychological horror films set in seedy buildings).

Michael SCH

This will be a first time watch along for me also. There are just certain movies I've avoided for one reason or another, but since it's you guys, then I'll try and be brave and share in the experience, even if it scars me for life.

Guston Zimasheen

@Aaron Barlow LOL! I'm amused that Americans think their democrats are leftists. Always such a narrow view of the world and anything outside of their country.

Domino

Hadn't planned on watching this one, so I cheated and just watched your review at the end. But you both seemed so impacted by it that I'm gonna have watch the whole damn thing now! Thanks a lot!! ;)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

This was my first time watching, and I thought it was meh. I wasn't as disturbed as you two, but it did leave me feeling in a bit of a bad mood. Honestly, I don't know why this movie is considered a classic. I don't really think ghosts, evil, the devil and such are scary so that might be part of it. While this movie was dark, I'd say that 'Full Metal Jacket', 'Taxi Driver' and even 'Memento' are darker films. 'The Mist' gets an honorable mention for the ending alone. I do agree with you that I wouldn't recommend 'Rosemary's Baby' to other people.

Jeffrey Miller

You need to watch something light-hearted after this, like Wes Craven's "The Last House On The Left" (1972) 😈

Mr. Writhms

Hoo boy, that's a strong take. Republicans are set to win congress next month, and Christianity is still by far the majority belief system in the US (64% in 2020) vs all other religions – including Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists – totaling about 6%. Personally, as a Christian, I think any person can find redemption (including pedophiles) but besides that I don't perceive child molesters getting much "love" from anybody. Not hating, just disagreeing.

Mark

Not to mention, Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar winning music score for "The Omen" is scary all by itself. That title theme gives me chills. 😱

Mr. Writhms

I know this wasn't an easy watch for you guys, but I'm glad you reacted to it. I'd only read the book, so this was a first-time watch for me too, and I think it's my favourite reaction from you during this year's Spooky Season!

Future Boy

You guys have to watch 'Dog Soldiers'. It's a great action/horror similar to 'Aliens' in structure. If you're truly finished with horror season then it can be viewed as a great action film.

Aaron Barlow

I love demonic possession supernatural horror movies. To me they're the scariest. Slasher movies and torture porn movies don't interest me at all. They just irritate me as I always feel I could kill the bad guy as he's just a guy normally. The supernatural is more scary as it's the unknown and beyond our understanding, it taps into our primal fears and superstitions and there's always a fear in the back of our minds that it could be real.

Aaron Barlow

The Burbs! Don't feel like you have to wait for next Halloween to watch it. The Burbs works whenever!

Future Boy

Is that question for me, or Mark? If it's for me, and about The Entity, well, yeah, but.... Spoiler warning, in case anyone wants to see it and hasn;t... It's scary, but in the way that it's about a woman who gets raped by ghosts. Repeatedly, often, and graphically. It's not done for shock, and it is done well, but oh my yuck. It's just too hard to watch. Maybe I'm being unfair here, because it is a well done film, but it gives me major PTSD, and based on what Sam said, it sort of looked like it would be more than she wanted. She said she didn't want to feel that way again, and Entity left me feeling the same way as this one, but way worse. It was meant as a warning so that if it was too much, they wouldn't walk into it and be traumatized for life. LOL

Raven Dark

I love The Entity. I think it's a great horror film, and underrated. I hope you don't blacklist it forever based on one comment. I don't find it anywhere near as dark as Rosemary's Baby. It feels much more mainstream, more "Hollywood." Rosemary's Baby, on the other hand, has a horrible, dark cloud hanging over it for its entire runtime.

Future Boy

The leftists establishment loves pedophiles, Ironically Edgy now is being Christian and/or Conservative. The MSM paints them as the new boogeyman lol. I'm waiting for the new horror films to be trapped in a town of religious hillbilly types. Perhaps 'Get out' was the start.

Aaron Barlow

It was also infested with beatles. ;)

Aaron Barlow

The Omen is a classic. I guess Mark is a scaredy cat lol

Aaron Barlow

Too scary?

Aaron Barlow

P.S.S. Have you guys ever seen Amadeus?

Sergeant Pepper

P.S. Don't completely write off horrible movies - you never know which ones won't upset you. I know the Shining is a horror movie - but never once was I even creeped out. When I think Shining I never think scary - I think Jack Nicholson is one batshit crazy motherfucker.

Sergeant Pepper

ka·suh·VEH·teez.

Mark

I saw this movie once before many years ago. I thought it was OK. I didn't have a negative reaction to it at all though. And I never revisited it until now with you guys. I DID have a negative reaction to Hereditary - and I loved it. Once in a while I'll go back and watch specific scenes that I think are great. Not sure what kind of sense that makes but there ya go.

Sergeant Pepper

oof!

Mark

Oh man I'm sorry spooky season is over already for your channel! Halloween is my favorite time of year and I love horror films - but I'm also not into demon/supernatural stuff.

Mark

Totally makes sense. I'm an artist. I used to not even walk out of movies because even if I hated them I had to watch them to the very end. Figured I owed them that much. That last part has changed though. :)

Alex

What separates this from Hereditary is that this is about a husband completely not only betraying his wife but violating her in the worst way imaginable and giving her over to the most absolute evil. It is the complete opposite of what a marriage should be, and it involves that word you can't say on YouTube. A marriage is supposed to be the head of a family, and family just does not do that to each other.

Alex

I hope you have a pallet cleanser. I would suggest The Burbs, Monster Squad, or Paranormal Activity.

David Crabtree

I know what topic would punch but I'm not going to say it.

Alex

I think you summed this up perfect! I hope you enjoy some good Monty Python after this one 😊 what a way to end spooky season! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh hey, speaking of which, the first two words reminded me. Dude Where's My Car ... The next time you wanna watch one of those comedies that is just a really dumb movie but completely hilarious :)

Alex

I think when you consider the time of films it can take on a whole new meaning! Definitely something Daniel and I lack going in pretty blind and watching these films so late -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yeah dude, Daniel is violent af LMAO

Alex

Oh no way! Wow -Sam

TBR Schmitt

You’re totally right! A different type of horror. That’s really sad to hear about Mia Farrow as well. I’m glad she got the opposite, of sorts, from Rosemary’s outcome of getting out of a bad relationship. -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL at least he’s consistent -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely on our list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL I never noticed that -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can totally understand that! And thanks for the warning on Entity haha this is our last film of Spooky Season but thanks for the recommendation -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can see that! It sounds like a lot of people have seen this once and then never again. Thanks for watching anyways! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Those were definitely up there with some of the darker films we’d seen on the channel, especially Hereditary, until we watched this! I agree with Ken, it has a dark spirit to it. We agree, it’s hard to get past unlikeable leads but not always true! We definitely thought the film was incredible, but we didn’t enjoy how it made us feel and I don’t think that was conveyed correctly in our outro discussion. Thanks for your thoughts, JJ! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

What always strikes me on re-watches of this movie--which I love--is the constant sound of a ticking clock in the background. This is a slow descent into madness, and the quiet, almost contemporary acceptance of that madness in the end. Madness, and in its sane, clear-minded embrace, evil. For me, this ranks up there with the likes of 'Alien' and 'The Thing' as one of the greatest horror movies of all time--all though many people probably don't categorize this as true horror. There's no gore. No real jump scares. Just quiet descent. I think you're absolutely right about the way it makes you feel; and though I love this movie, I typically have a silly, funny, or good-natured movie lined up afterward to help clear my mind (probably gonna watch 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' in a little bit). Not a fan of Roman Polanski the person; but, he made some spectacular movies. I'd highly recommend 'Chinatown' as well. Great reaction as usual; and always love your discussions afterward.

Steve Mercier

This is from the same period as The Exorcist, as that Time magazine cover summed up: "God is dead" - civil rights violence, hippies, Viet Nam, the decline of trust in religious institutions, it felt like the culture had abandoned/lost the things they used to put their hope in. So in that context, "look at this story of the woman at the center of the birth of the antichrist" perhaps seemed both very subversive, and tapping into the anxiety of the time, as the Exorcist did. Nowadays every other TV show is about witches, sexy demons, etc. etc. so it has lost a lot of punch - it would have to be about pedophiles or something now, or I don't know what.

Mark

Fun fact: The apartment building that was shown in the beginning of the film was where John Lennon lived and was murdered.

Tim Raths

Great reaction, and thanks for taking on a challenging piece. Think about the power and impact that it had on you, and consider that there was almost no gore, or other cheap fright tricks. It still puts to shame, most of what we now call “horror”. And I hope your strong reaction doesn’t prevent you from exploring more from Polanski. For a little trivia: Mia Farrow was in an unhappy marriage to Frank Sinatra at the time. He was very controlling and jealous, and didn’t want her to make this movie. But she wanted the challenge, and was miserable at home. So her decision to take the part cemented their end. Sinatra was powerful and far-reaching, so she hid out by living with friends, and spending most of her time in the security of the movie set. But aside from this, there’s so much interesting trivia during Hollywood of that era. One of the things that make it most effective for me, is that except for a couple of short setups, it’s produced in the manner of a film from Hollywood’s golden age, but the story is horrific. That juxtaposition had great impact. And when it was released, there certainly hadn’t been anything that quite compared.

David Wilkins

Sam: Leave him! TBR: Kill him! Man, you really do jump right to the killing in these reactions.

Thomas Yanez

The Omen(1976) is better IMO

christopher brown

Other content notwithstanding, I've always wondered why they are always shown watching TV in what looks like an uncomfortable position directly in front of the TV.

Thomas Yanez

This is a techincally good movie, but I can't watch it either, for all the same reasons you said here. It's far from the darkest movie I've seen. That title would have to fall to The Entity. Which you guys should never, EVER watch. Like, ever. You'd know ny the description it's something you wouldn't want to touch. But this one leaves me with a similarly bad, depressed feeling, Not as bad as the feeling The Entity left me with, but still. To say that either movie leaves me feeling icky is saying something, because I can watch Misery without flinching, even the foot scene. If you want something lighter and funny that's still fitting for Halloween, you should watch Hocus Pocus and its sequel. It's spooky and very Halloweeny, but not really scary except in kind of a kid's movie way. Love you guys, and looking forward to what's to come.

Raven Dark

I never cared for this film, I just skipped to the end here for your overall thoughts and review. On the bright side, you got this reaction out of the way and can leave it behind you.

David Crabtree

Satan rapes a woman, or as Roman Polanski calls it, "date night."

David Crabtree

Casa-veets rhymes with beets.

Grand Moff Slackin'

LOL! A first time for everything! We didn’t hate the movie, we hated the experience of watching it, if that makes sense 😂 You’re very right though, different times and it was so hard to watch poor Rosemary lose herself throughout her pregnancy -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks for the recommendation! Yeah thinking about it afterwards, it’s a big yikes! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL we feel you on that! Thanks for the recommendations! We loved LA Confidential too -Sam

TBR Schmitt

This film is definitely got a dark spirit to it, especially given who made the film. It's not explicit in it's darkness like those other films you mentioned but the vibe has a disturbing energy

Ken Veader

I think this is the first time I saw any negative reaction from you guys. I always wondered "What happens if they watch a movie for the channel and they don't like it." lol I really like your reaction because it is a proper reaction that anyone should have to the events. It also really shows how bound people can be by their minds and by the customs of a time period. Even after she knew everything that was going on she still gave her husband the book, got into the.car her, walked with him to the car. I could feel the sense of her being unable to get out of that social programming of just doing whatever he says, until it just got completely off the rails when they started shooting her up with drugs and she realized Dr. Hill had turned her in.

Alex

Well they did say it was a really great movie. Just that they would never want to watch it again and they wouldn't recommend it to anyone. TBH I honestly wouldn't watch this again. But for me I am extremely selective about how I spend my time since there is a finite amount of it.

Alex

Also, please look up how to pronounce John Cassavetes. He's actually a legendary filmmaker(sort of invented indie filmmaking)

Birdie Num Num

What a surprising reaction(I only watched the outro). I never would have guessed you would say it was the darkest movie you've seen on the channel and that you hated watching it(esp since you've seen Hereditary, TCM, Taxi Driver, Clockwork Orange). If I was making a list of the darkest movies I've seen, not sure I would have even thought of this film. I have noticed that younger generations(which make up majority of all reactors) have trouble getting into films with unlikable leads, which in a way shows how safe and simple modern American cinema generally is, esp compared to late 60s and 70s. I guess likable characters are pretty low on my list when judging the greatness of a film.Maybe you should avoid some of the war movie suggestions - Come And See, Casualties of War - that is the sort of fare I think of when I think of "dark" films. Or Henry Portrait of A Serial Killer. And maybe it would be wise to avoid films about sexual assault in the future (which Casualties of War is much more explicitly about than Rosemary's Baby). Also the book was exactly like the film, and a huge bestseller(the movie set box office records when it opened). Essentially it was as big as your average superhero film today. Guess people were entertained by very different fare in the late 60s...

Birdie Num Num

Yeah Chinatown and LA Confidential are both incredible films. I recommend Chinatown too.

PIG

Repulsion is a pretty good film of his too.

Tim Raths

Despite that I can't stand Polanski, this and Chinatown are excellent films. Interesting how the hubby did a deal to give his wife over with the devil for his movie career

Ken Veader

I watched the film 20 years ago and will never watch it again :) If you want to see more from Polanski i vote for "Chinatown" from 1974 with Jack Nicholson !! It is a Masterpiece and one of the best movies of the 70's for me ... Same Style as LA Confidential ... Another Great Polanski is "Frantic" from 1988 With Harrison Ford ... Another Great Film with Mia Farrow is Agatha Chrissties "Death On The Nile" from 1977 ... I'm Sure you will Love all 3 Agatha Christie Movies ;)
