Western Movie Poll!

Help pick the Western film we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

Comments

Yup. Both great films, gotta go together. #pals

Jonathan Patrick

Young Guns being ahead of the others in this poll is perplexing to me..but to each his own 🙃

ron clint

That's an excellent movie, and *very* underrated. A lot of people think it's boring. I think the middleground is that it might be 'boring' for casuals, but it IS, objectively, a well written, well acted, slowburn western. Quality pick, and woefully under-watched!

Trepanation21

If the winner turns out to be "Young Guns", I hope "Young Guns 2" is slated for a future reaction. I think number 2 is a tad bit better than 1.

Moe howard

Dead Man (1995). Nice intro to Jim Jarmusch :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

You'll love Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid.

Neal Romanek

I’m not real big on westerns so I haven’t seen many of these. 3:10 To Yuma is a damn good movie though.

Nick of Time

Would love to see that reaction

Jonathan Patrick

I'm glad to see The Assasination (2007) on the list. Incredible acting, especially Casey Affleck. I can't think of another reaction channel that would do this movie more justice than Daniel & Sam.

YoureMrLebowski

Yup both great films. But also Young Guns 2

Jonathan Patrick

Young Guns is a fun 80's western, referenced on Cobra Kai recently too, well Young Guns 2 was

Ken Veader

Like all the other lists, there're just too many good selections.

Smooticus

I may have suggested this last year, but "The Big Country" with Gregory Peck is one of my favorites, and definitely a different take on old-west masculinity. It features a stunning score by Jerome Moross as well.

CluckingBell

"Lonesome Dove" is pretty much an annual rewatch for me (the book is more time-consuming, so it's on a ~10-year cycle). You, Me, & the Movies put the miniseries on a 2-option poll earlier this year, but their base is horror and it was up against Stephen King, so it did not fare well.

CluckingBell

Of course! How could I have forgotten that? Thanks for reminding me!

William 1611

Agreed. So many left off the list. I understand it has to be limited but a lot of good ones get left by the wayside.

softshoes

I think "Tombstone" won the last westerns poll: https://youtu.be/Bx8wuvzF02Q

CluckingBell

These results are how you know not enough people here have seen Bone Tomahawk! They don't even realize what they're missing ;P This is an excellent list, but unless you're just trying to watch /all/ the classics, Bone Tomahawk is easily within the top 5 of this list.

Trepanation21

Honestly, I think all the movies on this list are worth a watching and they all have their own twist on the western.

Robert Boyd

Imo, it's in a class by itself. An absolutely required reaction... some day ;)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Rio Bravo>>>>

Ken Veader

Bone Tomahawk has reached cult status with its stellar cast, great writing, and downright unnerving theme. I hope it wins, but probably not this time..

ron clint

Deadwood is a top 3 all-time television drama.

Jason Chirevas

From The Outlaw Josey Wales: "Not a hard man to follow -- he leaves dead men wherever he goes".

David Martin

Oooh boy, might I be so bold as to suggest that you watch the top two vote-getters here? Young Guns + 310 to Yuma would be a killer combo!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

You need to have War Wagon onto any western poll you do. John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Keenan Wynn, this is as close to a perfect western you'll ever see.

Rayna & Mike Sitter

Actually, Open Range reminds me—Robert Duvall was even more iconic as Gus in “Lonesome Dove”, which won basically every award it could, as a series AND a book. It was actually one of the first national miniseries sensations, and unusual in that it starred big name movie stars, who usually did not do TV back in those days. I don’t think anyone has reacted to it—which is a crying shame.

Warren H

I watched Open Range with Costner and Duvall so many times. Great villain, beautiful cinematography and music. Best gunfights too. By far my favorite modern western. LOVE IT!

Eric Frazee

What a terrific list! According to the critics (yawn), "The Searchers" is the greatest western ever made, and it's certainly ONE of the best. But everything on your list is good. I voted for "The Quick & The Dead," not because it's the best film, but because it has a BRILLIANT cast and the plot is a "swerve" on a classic western trope. No spoilers, but Gene Hackman, Leonardo di Caprio, Russell Crowe, Gary Sinese, Sharon Stone, Tobin Bell ("Saw"), Lance Henricksen ("Alien") . . . and more. In the future, you might do the great "Tombstone" and John Wayne's original "The Alamo." This'll be good!

William 1611

Love that soundtrack too

Jonathan Patrick

Yeah, I think I probably love YOUNG GUNS II better than the original.

Philip Davetas

While it is probably accurate, it neither affects nor negates my assumption

Thomas Yanez

That would be great. I love listening to those people speak.

Thomas Yanez

More like members of a specific demographic (i.e. younger).

Miles E Coburn

So since you both seem all in on westerns now, any chance we'll be able to add Deadwood to a future poll for the next series you'll watch? :)

Grumples

I'm going to assume that the majority of the people voting for "Young Guns" have not seen any of the other movies on the list.

Thomas Yanez

That doesn't make it good, especially compared to some of the other options available.

Thomas Yanez

Hmm...Young Guns or Silverado. Both are epic classics. Also, The Magnificent Seven (2016) and American Outlaws (2001)

ShadowVessel π

Lots of great choices here but my vote is for young guns such a great movie with an awesome soundtrack

Ian

All movies are subjective and everyone has different tastes. Let's be a little more respectful.

David Crabtree

Kevin Costner seems to have a knack for Western.😉

Stephanie

The only reason I want to watch Young Guns is because it was the topic of part of a Cobra Kai episode.

Alex

Westerns are a big enough tent there’s room for everything on this poll, including YOUNG GUNS, which, as a decidedly 80s movie, is just another interpretation on the tropes and trappings of the broader genre. I’d actually argue the even more cartoony YOUNG GUNS II is better, as it’s more slickly directed and leans further into being an 80s rock western. THE SEARCHERS is, by light years, the best movie on this poll. It’s an American masterpiece by a master of the genre. I have every confidence Sam and Dan will get to it and love it, whether it wins this poll or not. But I bet they’d love BONE TOMAHAWK too. I do. That’s westerns. 🤷‍♂️

Jason Chirevas

While no where near a classic Western from the mid 20th century, I have to recommend Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman (the pilot) here. It's a full length movie on its own and is a wonderful demonstration of how great the series is.

Alex

You have Unforgiven at one end of the western spectrum, Tombstone in the middle, and Young Guns at the other end. They all have their place. I think they'll get a kick out of it.

Future Boy

The only thing I can remember from that movie is "I'm a Pugilist!"

Opie Wan

One of my favorites

Smooticus

About time Young Guns gets some respect in the voting. One of those where the sequel is just as good or better. #Pals #IllMakeYaFamous

Jonathan Patrick

I can't believe Young Guns is leading all the others in the list.

David Martin

Great List !!! Another Great who is Missing is the Oscar Drama "Dancing with Wolves" from 1990 ... Kevin Costners Masterpiece and a Must Watch for Me !!! It has also a Scene in Hot Shots !!! Also you have to add more John Wayne Western to your List: "Red River" from 1948, "Fort Apache" from 1948, "El Dorado" from 1966, "Chisum" from 1970, "True Grit" from 1969, "Rio Grande" from 1950, "Hondo" from 1953, "Rio Bravo" from 1959 and "Rio Lobo" from 1970 ... These are all my Favorite John Wayne of all Time !!!

Florian Meier

I completely agree with Stephanie. Westerns have never been a favorite genre, but ‘Open Range’ is among my top-10 all-time Westerns. The cast is outstanding, and if I hadn’t known going in, I never would have guessed it was directed by Kevin Costner. He earned a legend for himself with this one.

David Wilkins

That's a good one, yet another John Ford film. The guy is the king of westerns, what can you say: Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, The Searchers, Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Right there, those are four essentials. And a whole lot of others, western and non-westerns.

Toc

well you're certainly right about it not being the best film, lol.

Toc

Replying to Mark M: I saw it when I was 19, and yes I had seen plenty of great westerns by the time I was 12, they were ubiquitous on TV (both cable and broadcast). The original commenter is completely correct. It's a piece of tripe. 80s and 90s Westerns ain't where it's at for the genre, sorry Mark. I'll allow "Unforgiven" and that's pretty much it. PS: So let me get this straight: your position is watch a piece of garbage like Young Guns and NOT watch an actual western, a good western, or even a good movie, of any genre?! Like why even waste time watching something that was never ever that great in the first place! You can steep in mediocrity or you can expose yourself to something of actual quality. I'm shocked anyone even remembers such a piece of crap! lol. It's not like it was a beloved movie, or had any effect on pop culture or anything. To choose to watch that when you can watch something that's actually good? It's certainly not a "classic"! lol.

Toc

It's a shame that Open Range is not on the list, so I vote for Silverado. Great movie.

Stephanie

Love John Wayne westerns...it would be hard to pick my favorite. And I second all the choices you mentioned...One Eyed Jacks is such a forgotten film. FYI...my wife saw John Wayne in Stagecoach when she was 30...his first scene in movie when he twirls his rifle, she stated "Oh my god, he is beautiful".

Anthony Perez

It came out in 1988 so I was 33. And I am a big Western movie fan...this however is a kids idea of a western, as I have stated. Yes movies are make believe but this is like a bunch of teens making a movie and posturing throughout the process. We all know that the actors in movies were not real cownboys or gunslingers but these kids acting is just laughable. IMO....watch Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood or the latest True Grit or The WIld Bunch....those are westerns.

Anthony Perez

When you saw it when you were 12, had you already watched any other Westerns on this list? I think Daniel and Sam would get a kick out of it.

Mark M

Young Guns is awesome. I know every line in that movie.

Rudy Hernandez

“Shane” needs to be on a future poll. Lots of good movies, though, on this one.

Cliff Smelley

I think I prefer the original because of Glenn Ford. He was so good in that movie.

Cliff Smelley

List fails w/o The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

softshoes

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was

bosho11

I didn't pick that one, but I really love this movie as well.

Philip Davetas

I think it was in YOUNG GUNS II where he says that.

Philip Davetas

Wow. This is tough. So many great choices. But I always have a soft spot for YOUNG GUNS even though it's not the best film, but it gets me in all the right feels. "Pals."

Philip Davetas

I have to agree. I was 12 when it came out, and loved it. Saw it again a few years back and was like “….oh, my.” Kinda deserve’s its 29% tomatometer rating. Butch Cassidy and 3:10 are true grown-up fair with interesting things to say, and Josie’s Wales has probably the greatest Clint Eastwood one-liner ever, though of course I won’t reveal it here. 😁

Warren H

Young Guns is so declassee. It's a 13 yr olds idea of a Western movie.

Anthony Perez

Millions of people have seen Mag 7 without watching Seven Samurai first and I think that works in its favor. Mag 7 is good, but if you come to it having already seen the source material, then you're going to be comparing every second of it and it'll diminish the experience. SS is a strong enough film to stand on its own, which means it can be seen after a Mag 7 viewing.

Paul Cox

Young guns will make you famous! Don't watch Magnificent Seven before watching Seven Samurai! Hoping you get to Kurosawa's Samurai Westerns soon! Yojimbo (especially since you loved the man with no name trilogy), Sanjuro, and Seven Samurai are all essential viewings if you are getting into the Western Genre

bosho11

A must watch for this channel!

bosho11

Would have loved to have seen The Treasure of the Sierra Madre on offer this time, but I think that would be probably the oldest film ever screened on the channel (older than 12 Angry Men by several years). Still, it's probably Bogart's best film—unless you stan Casablanca, which is understandable—and it might be John Huston's best film as a director as well. A stunner.

Paul Cox

I voted for The Quick and The Dead. It's an excellent cast, for starters. I don't know if I'd call it an excellent film, but it's an extremely Sam Raimi film, and that makes it worth a watch.

Paul Cox

I can't believe Outlaw Josie Wales isn't getting more love here

Smooticus

I really enjoy that movie

Smooticus

"Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid", definitely, that is one of the last great westerns, and a sort of goodbye to old Hollywood, and hello to the new one. And it makes a great reaction video. I'll add three titles that any movie fan should have under their belt: "One Eyed Jacks", the only movie Marlon Brando ever directed, fantastic western. And nothing tops the archetype of all Westerns, "Stagecoach" which, among other things, has the some of the most jaw-dropping stunts ever in a sound movie (not to mention it's the movie that put John Wayne on the map). And "My Darling Clementine" with Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp, it doesn't get more iconic or fundamental than that movie. Both are directed by John Ford, THE western director of all time. (He also did "The Searchers" which is on this poll, but I prefer these other two).

Toc

All are great but The Searchers would be my pick. Also Shane would great on the list too

Eric Frazee

I’m really hoping Jesse James gets some love here. A genuine classic.

Garry L

Especially if it has Sam's Native American tribe. jk

Guston Zimasheen

There's the original 3:10 to Yuma from 1957 that's also very good.

David Martin

Bone Tomahawk is so good!

Steve

This list is driving me insane. Too many favorites... 😳 I think the Clint Eastwood westerns should be mandatory watching. No "High Plains Drifter" on the poll? Its a shot in the back! 😵

Mr. Writhms

lol

Sonny Smith

Dances With Wolves should be here. I know, it's a lot more than a Western, and the movie is hard to pin down into the genre, but it has a lot of trappings of a western, enough to qualify, and most reactors who end up putting it on a poll end up putting it on a Wetern because it's the best fit. I really hope you'll get a chance to see it, and I do believe you'll love it.

Raven Dark

3:10 to Yuma for sure. I miss Hostiles here. Bone Tomahawk had me split down the middle IYKWIM.

David Lengyel

Young Guns, Bone Tomahawk and 3:10 to Yuma are all excellent movies. The rest are ok.

Sonny Smith

Young Guns. Then then Young Guns 2 🔫👍 Does Johnny Lawrence get a vote lol (Episode 5 final season)
