Help pick the Drama film we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen TBOEM, so this would only be Sam's first time watching!

Comments

I just remembered that you have to see the 1970's thriller Marathon Man (starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider - written by William Goldman, whose movies you love). I came here to tell you this. My work is done...

Neal Romanek

"Fearless" has zero chance of winning. But I've hoped for years now that a reactor would watch it. It really has been flying under the radar since its release.

WastedPo

@Tyler. Huh, I had never even heard of that one before. Thanks for the suggestion!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Awww, man. Too bad you've already seen it, but glad you liked it so much :D

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

The first memory I have of sobbing to a film! Daniel and I have both seen it, but damn, what a movie! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I'd definitely be interested in it. I also would love to seem them tackle a movie that gave me similar vibes, 2018's Blindspotting.

Tyler Foster

What about The Iron Giant (1999)? One of the greatest animated films of all time!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Because the performance of Dustin Hoffman won him the best actor AcademyAward, Cruise actually was equally as good, the story is based on a real life person (Kim Peake), and the chemistry jumps off the screen. Oh..and the musical score is perfection...

ron clint

Seconded. In a way, I've never seen another movie like it!

Robert Livingood

Lol why do people like Rain Man so much..?

Miggie88

I just LOVE to live and die in LA, its a great film, one of the best chase sequences ever filmed, young Willem Dafoe, & Vintage 1980s LA. it wont win, but I sure hope Dan & Sam watch it.

Chris Bruneau

I agree it's a brilliant movie, funny and challenging and gripping. I would LOVE to see Sam and TBR's post-movie discussion about the climax of that film.

Mark Kelso

I'm very curious to see how much interest there would be in watching Do the Right Thing (1989). It's one of my top 10 movies of all time (and has been for decades). Additionally, practically NOBODY has reacted to it, which is a damn shame. It was Spike Lee's second film... and, to this day, there's still never really been anything else like it.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Fearless is a great movie that you don't hear about much these days - Peter Weir, great director. My favorite on the list is Trainspotting, but throwing my vote for Rain Man.

Neal Romanek

Rain Man is really good, but I was hoping to see The Elephant Man, Trainspotting, or Eyes Wide Shut pull a win. Keeping my fingers crossed Eyes Wide Shut will earn a viewing around Christmastime.

Nick of Time

To Live and Die in LA is awesome

Ken Veader

No more suffering watching their early masterpieces (Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, The Hudsucker Proxy) get overlooked! And they hardly have a dud in the bunch through to today.

Tyler Foster

Yeah, if you watch Trainspotting, definitely check out T2 Trainspotting as well. In my opinion, it's up there with Creed, Doctor Sleep, and Blade Runner 2049 as a genuinely great "legacy sequel."

Tyler Foster

Very true! I also think of Wonder Boys as my first (soft) exposure to LGBTQ+ cinema, even though the central story doesn't focus on its LGBTQ+ characters. I remember when this came out that was about as queer as you could expect a mainstream movie to get!

Eric Lee

Like the best work of any given “genre”, it doesn’t cling tenaciously and inflexibly to genre.

David Wilkins

Ooooooh, THAT's an idea! :D

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Agreed. Kubric considered it his greatest film.

BRT

It's the way of the world. I think it would be great to do polls like this but also do like a random wheel spin for the runners up, so there's an occasional wildcard winner instead of just by popular vote.

BRT

Hey whatever poll it ends up on I'll vote for it ;D

BRT

Yeah since 2007. I should have said unrated version but that is the film in it's entirety as Kubric intended it.

BRT

Trainspotting is one of my favorite movies ever and well worth the watch regardless. FYI: it also has an excellent sequel done roughly 20 years later, that (similar to Cobra Kai) takes a different thematic approach to the material and world of its characters while still being faithful to that which came before.

Christopher B.

Steel Magnolias (1989)

Jonathan Patrick

I'm begging! Just do the Coen Brothers in chronological order!

Tyler Foster

I wonder if there's any interest in Blue Ruin (2013)? Someone recommended Green Room (2015), in the horror poll, and it's written/directed by the same dude. They are both FANTASTIC films.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Terms of Endearment and Broadcast News are great dramas by James L Brooks, who also directed As Good As it Gets and created The Simpsons. They should definitely be on your reactions list. Glad to see Fearless on your list. It’s a masterpiece and my favorite Jeff Bridges performance. It won’t win the poll because almost nobody has seen it. Trust me, though, it’s worth watching.

Robert Boyd

Im.not sure there is an uncut version yet?

ron clint

Yes! Another example of Lynch playing it straight with historical stuff.

William 1611

Well, so much for my theory about y'all only voting for things they've seen before! :) Surprised to see Sleepers getting so little love. Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Billy Crudup, Robert DeNiro, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman.... I mean... good lord, talk about STACKED! And even though he's only in the film for like 2 seconds, I think King Benny steals the whole damn thing! :D

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Rain Man is running away with this one but I hope one day we get a reaction to The Elephant Man.

Tim Raths

IMHO, "Rain Man" is the pick of the litter for sheer drama (although there are comedic elements as well). "The Elephant Man" is a very good historical drama, but don't be expecting a typically "weird" David Lynch movie: he was playing it straight. And he plays it straight very well.

William 1611

I'm torn between Spun(2002) and Requiem for a Dream(2000) myself

mikethemotormouth

You’re not wrong about that.

Alex

its the greatest film about drugs, ever

Nick Sneddon

Sleepers is a hard, but perfect movie🤘

ShadowVessel π

I know it won't stand a chance of winning but I'm still voting for sleepers an amazing cast with outstanding performances 👍 I just hope one day you get to watch as a reaction or join st in your own time you won't regret it I promise you

Ian

Trainspotting is as funny if not more than some of the movies in the comedy poll LOL. MUST WATCH.

Alex

Yep I would consider it a drama

Jeff Phillips

Pump up the Volume. It's in my top 5 films. Maybe sounds kind of sad, but that film was my best friend during high school. Maybe it saved my life. The world will stop turning if I ever see it on the schedule!

Future Boy

It has a "Coen Brothers Comedy" feel to it for some reason.

Lük

Wonder Boys is great, but I always thought of it as more comedy than drama!

Eric Lee

EWS is such a hypnotic film - visually fascinating and fantastic use of music!

Eric Lee

Surely the Coen Brothers deserve a poll of their own.

David Martin

Eyes Wide Shut should be watched regardless, Kubricks final film and its great and disturbing

Ken Veader

Not surprised Rain Man is running away with it. The definition of character development. Not really fair to everything else.

mikethemotormouth

I'll second Crash, almost as good as Crash(1996)

mikethemotormouth

Is the proposed version of Eyes Wide Shut the uncut version, which Kubric considered his greatest contribution to Cinema? Or is it going to be the cut version

BRT

I love it! But is it "Drama"?

BRT

Sleepers is so underrated.

Stephanie

Breaks my heart to see wonderful films get so few votes, and the predictable, or box office champs get so many. And that applies to most polls.

David Wilkins

3) Moonstruck (Cher and Nickolas Cage) 1987. Great movie that won Cher an Oscar.

Jeff Phillips

TBR and Sam, couple of more great dramas if you have not seen them to add to future lists: 1) Schindlers List and ET (both Directed by Steven Spielberg) 2) No Way Out -1987 (Kevin Kostner and Gene Hackman) underrated great movie like a drama/action

Jeff Phillips

To Live and Die in LA. I need more Willem Dafoe in my life.

Mark M

Blood Simple. Where it all began for Margie.

softshoes

Voted Rain Man. This would be a perfect poll for Amadeus and Kubrick's Barry Lyndon

bosho11

Yeah it largely flew under the radar when it came out. Personally I liked it but I know many people felt a little bored with it. I'd check out it for sure though, especially if you like little sea-side towns, something not often showed in American Films or shows.

Forrest

Would you put Under the skin under drama or horror? Creeped me out when I saw it but loved it. Great shout!

Forrest

Love that movie

Smooticus

I saw EWS the day it opened, at the earliest showing I could find: 11 a.m. And then I saw it again that night. I saw that movie twice in a single day, that's how much of a Kubrick die-hard I am! And then I watched it a zillion times afterwards. I am giving it one more chance this Christmas and that's it! I can't take it at all. In my opinion, the boot camp sequence of "Full Metal Jacket" was Stanley's last masterpiece, lol But hey - this Xmas, I'm going to watch this turkey one last time! I'm going to watch it either Christmas night.....or the night after Christmas. I am ready to receive the brilliance of EWS. I actually had a friend who worked on the set of EWS and got lots of great stories, some of which have surfaced, others that haven't. I want to like it! He died in March, the movie came out in the autumn - Kubrick famously edited right up until the premiere and in some cases (2001 and The Shining) made major cuts to the film after it premiered. EWS feels unfinished, he would have been tweaking that thing right up until the release.

Toc

"Her" would be great. And while we're talking weird films that feature Scarlett Johansson, also Under the Skin (2013).

Future Boy

I hope you choose to put Eyes Wide Shut on the schedule one day. Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Kubrick's final film. I understand why some people hate it, but over the years it's become my favourite Kubrick film, and I'm a Kubrick die-hard. Consider it for December. It's got a "Christmas in New York" vibe that I love. P.S. I hope Rain Man holds on to its lead. It would be a great reaction!

Future Boy

Its my favourite film of the last decade, i don’t think its popular enough outside of Europe though unfortunately

Nick Sneddon

It HAS to be Trainspotting – one million percent

Nick Sneddon

There's also Ready Player One, Wade's all through that ;) Same with Deadpool.

Aaron Barlow

Ha, great to see "Blood Simple" up there; it's not really a drama. It's like "Fargo". What is "Fargo"? It's not a comedy, right? It's not a drama. It's Coen Brothers! Same thing with "Blood Simple". I definitely gave it a vote though! The first two Coen Brothers movies are two of their absolute best. And "The Elephant Man" is the definition of a drama, and also an actual masterpiece (as opposed to just throwing that word around as so many do, lol). One day you'll hit those two and they will be great reactions!

Toc

100%! I really, really hope they eventually get to it at least. :D I requested it, not sure I was the only one, but it's one of my all time favorite movies. Frances is amazing and I know they loved her in Fargo, which she won her first Oscar for. So this one, her second Oscar, will be amazing to watch. Also, Sam Rockwell's first Oscar!

Domino

I'd love to see these on a future drama poll: American History X (Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Avery Brooks) GATTACA (Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman) Pump Up The Volume (Christian Slater) American History X has to be seen by everyone, once in their lives. GATTACA is also a masterpiece people should watch at least once. PUTV came out before social media and probably not a lot of people have seen it, but it spoke to me as a depressed teen growing up in that era.

Dan

I've never heard of Manchester by the Sea! I'll have to check it out, because it's not going to win this poll.

David Martin

I'd vote for it! Excellent film. But there are so many excellent films that they will just have to wade through them.

David Martin

Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino is a classic drama- and it takes place over Thanksgiving so it would be a good one for November.

Matt DSM

I hope you'll do To Live in Die in LA regardless of the poll results! Best car chase EVER! You'll be shocked!

Steve

It would be so good to see Three Billboards. I doubt it will win, because people don't know about it, but any film that has Frances McDormand in it is worth watching, especially one that earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

David Martin

A great family drama is Searching for Bobby Fischer. I know noone will vote for it, not having seen it but it's amazing with a beautiful score from the late, great James Horner RIP.

Aaron Barlow

It’s definitely my favorite in this poll. Great cast, great soundtrack and just a great movie all the way around.

Matt DSM

Doubt anyone is going to suggest this ever so I'm going to suggest The Intouchables, which is a 2011 French film that was recently redone as an American version. But I'd love to see you guys watch the original French version. Very moving and very authentic. Another drama that no one else will recommend most likely is What Maisie Knew, which is a 2012 film with Julianne Moore in it. Legends of the Fall is a great suggestion as well. Also, Dead Poets Society is one of my favorite Drama films. Just saw someone request HER. Love that film so much as well!

Forrest

Wonder Boys is my favorite film of all time.

Lük

Great Poll !! Hope Rain Man will win!! Oscar Performance from Dustin Hoffman Love this Movie !!! Another Great Dustin Hoffman Drama is "Kramer vs Kramer" from 1979 With Meryl Streep ... Both won an Oscar !!!

Florian Meier

For a super dark drama/mystery: Gone Baby Gone.

Mark

Gone Girl, Everything Everywhere All At Once, & HER.

Tristan Durant

Voted Sleepers (all star cast) Legends of the Fall (1994) Meet Joe Black (1998) Crash (2004)
