One of my favorite stories is that director Mary Harron told Willem Dafoe to play every scene three ways: doesn't think Patrick did it, isn't sure whether Patrick did it, and is convinced that Patrick did it, and then she cut them together at random.

Bale is excellent but it's a hard movie to like, and I think that was the point. I forget if its in the movie but in the book he kills a child for fun. The book was designed to be outrageous and push the boundaries. I'd be worried about anyone who DOES love the film tbh, lol

It's what they call "a way homer", meaning you'll be thinking about it all the way home from the theater, aka "wtf did I just watch".
I took away from it that it's a dark meditation on psychopathy, narcissism, and capitalism lol
Honestly, I think it can be interpreted in so many, mostly metaphorical, ways.
If he did any of it and his crimes were covered up by other self interested people, that's just a rich New Yorker shooting someone on Fifth Avenue and getting away with it, that's speaking to how psychopathic/sociopathic certain parts of our society are, basically. OR, if it was all in his head, that's still pretty fucked up, but more like a weird meditation on the correlation between Narcissism and emotional impotence and a whole bag of messed up stuff.
Then there's another level where it's a joke about American culture in general, like how Bateman is superficially perfect but soulless.
Yeah you're probably gonna have to watch this some more, this is at least my third watch and I still don't know wtf I just watched 😂

During my earlier comments I neglected to say thank you for another splendid selection, and reaction to it. This is an unusual film, and it can be a large challenge to absorb everything initially. I’m a big re-watcher, and it probably took three views before all aspects of it were fully grasped, but even then, some of it is left to personal interpretation.
If you’re taking suggestions for spooky month, I would love to see your reaction to ‘Angel Heart’, with Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro, if you haven’t watched it. It’s loaded with creepy atmosphere.

A lot of people don't realize this movie is a dark comedy so it's meant to be absurd at times. Like Scorsese's AFTER HOURS or even HOT SHOTS!
Also, at the end of the movie, it is a different building - it is the idea that there are all of these offices and they are a ll the same. This movie is like a commentary on White Privilege and all of these people are just interchangeable and if you look at the real life stories of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, Robert Durst, Michael Peterson... this movie was SO far ahead of its time, or I should say the book it is based on, was so far ahead of its time and just a really frank look at how people can kind of just so whatever they want and get away with it in certain worlds.

I think much of this movie is a commentary on the excesses of the 80’s, and the Reagan era (but also corporatism and Americanism in general, that were amplified during that time). It’s loaded with cultural details from that era that will be missed by many people. Aspects of the depiction aren’t literal. One example is when he pulled the bloody body bag outside to the cab, the camera is pointing back to the lobby, and there’s no blood on the floor.

I also saw the film for the first time and was just as Confused at the end :) As always a Great reaction !! For your Spooky Season i have following suggestions: "Fatal Attraction" from 1987 with Michael Douglas and Glenn Close !! For Me one of the Best Thrillers of all Time!!! Then "The Burbs" from 1989 With Tom Hanks!! Fantastic Horror Comedy !!! And "The Witches of Eastwick" from 1987 with Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher and Susan Sarandon !!! A Great Horror Comedy and a Classic

Well said. The only part I'll disagree with is the last sentence. "...feeling the movie was a mess, and random, sorry you guys felt this way..."
I believe that feeling of confusion is intentional. At the end of the film Patrick is panicked and confused, and we were meant to be just as confused as he is. It's a way for us to get a peak inside his mind and feel how he feels.
I liked what Daniel said about the "feed me a stray cat" message being the first time in the film we get to see the world through Patrick's eyes. I believe that. I believe the same goes for the events that follow: the shootout with the cops, the exploding cars, the helicopter spotlight shining through his office windows. It all ties into the audience sharing that same experience with Patrick.
I love the last bit of narration before the film ends. He sits at the table with his friends and looks around the room. It's the moment that he finally gets to stop and think, and he realizes that there will be no consequences for his actions. He relieves himself of that panic and confusion. The sign on the door behind him reads "this is not an exit", and that's where we leave the story. Amazing.
I love this film.

Well, Nick, this is kind of my point. In the opening TBR says "...I don't know anything about this other than Christian Bale is a psycho... an American Psycho...“ which technically isn't really an expectation so much as having read the title and looked at the cover.
But, in the viewing, that is exactly what we got.
Then, in the closing, we get the "this wasn't what I expected“ again. Seems liked he got precisely what he was expecting. So, was there more to his expectation? Was there room for a little deeper exploration on what the movie might have been about? Since nearly every fan-hyped movie seems to be not what they expect, I'd really like to occasionally hear their pre-watch thoughts on these movies that are popular, but haven't been spoiled for them yet through popular culture.
That's all.

I think at the end of the day the most important thing is just whether the viewers enjoyed the movie, and I certainly did. Bale's performance was off the charts. It definitely requires one or two re-watches before you can really form a good opinion on what was real and what wasn't, but either way it's definitely thought provoking and sparks a lot of conversation with others who've seen it (like your parents). Thanks for sharing!

Was there anything you missed ?
Yes
Throughout the Entire Movie ... I mean THE WHOLE Movie ... they constantly show people not recognizing each other, calling each other the wrong name, mistaking each other for someone else.
Patrick constantly recognizes this and explains that people don't recongnize each other ( he thinks i'm this guy, but i have a better haircut )
Kimble (Defoe) explains 'Oh someone thought they saw him Paul Allen in London, but it was actually someone else' ... I feel Kimble is the only other person that recognizes this because he it's his job to stop, ask and confirm instead of just saying 'yea that's so and so' and moving on ...
So when the Lawyer finally tells him he had lunch with Paul Allen 10 days ago, it shouldn't be taken so seriously They try to emphasize how Batemans own lawyer can't even identify Bateman even when he's standing in front of him.
Don't take the Lawyer's misunderstanding of who is who as a plot twist... it just re-enforcing what you've seen throughout the entire movie
Building Redo?
No
I think people already explained this, but its two buildings, the movie even takes a moment to show Patrick running from one building to a similar one next door (two different lobbies, one with clocks and one without)
Everyone is Vice President?
Yes
In some corporate structures there are multiple Vice Presidents in a Financial Service company.
VP .. Senior VP, Jr VP, Executive VP, etc etc ... depending on the structure of the company you can have 1 to X amt of VPs (such as in branch VP structures)
Is everything in the mind of Patrick Bateman ?
No
People did die,
Plot?
I felt there was
You are taken into Patrick's thoughts talking about who he is, what he wants, his self diagnosis, and his search for catharsis and finally the realization that the world doesn't care.
Patrick despite his constant cries and confessions, no one listens. The world is indifferent and would rather set aside his madness to keep the norm and just move forward (where do we go for dinner). Patrick can't believe this, his pain is never addressed and it turns into him hoping the world gets to feel the pain he has at the end... Patrick has realized despite the craziness of who he is and what he does the world just moves on.
I was so eager to see you guys react to this, it came across as you feeling the movie was a mess, and random, sorry you guys felt that way, but i can understand how it can be confusing.

You know, y'all say "that wasn't what I was expecting at all" a lot for these movies that get recommended so heavily. It might be kind of entertaining if you started telling us your expectations before you start some of these movies you know nothing about, but have a surprising amount of fan support.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet, but he didn't "redo" the same building. If you go back and watch, you'll see they are completely different men at the front desks - different hair, different uniforms, different decor behind the desks, they know him by different names... it isn't the same building and nobody "came back to life". You even see him leave and run across a short open area between two buildings that looked identical (at the base). It's a "sister" building, where they are architecturally the same.
Doesn't change the fact that it's a mind-fuck of a movie, but at least that is one less thing you can point at to say "it didn't happen".

Probably my third time watching this movie in the last 20 years that's kind of how I feel. There are parts about the movie I really like, but as a whole I'd give it a 7/10. I just don't think it offers any interesting insights, it feels like a series of skits, and other stuff. It's good and Bale is great.

Fun fact, in the movie Rules of Attraction, one of the main characters is Pat Bateman's younger brother Sean Bateman. They don't reference it the movies but they do in the books. Both books are by Bret Easton Ellis. I don't recommend the books. But the movies are great.
Ed R
2022-09-29 01:09:52 +0000 UTC
The movie, like the book, is supposed to be confusing. All of Bret Easton Ellis' novels are about 80s decadence, greed, nihilism and drugs. In the book it's suggested that he did kill all of those people. In the movie its kind of the opposite. But I think the message was that everyone he knows is so self absorbed that they wouldn't even notice if a murderer in their midst. Its also why people get confused about other people names, people lie about what they did or are doing, why everyone is sleeping with everyone else. ITs also why he confesses multiple times and people don't even listen to him. Personally I think its fantasy. I think he lives in a culture that doesn't care about anyone so he fantasizes about getting away with murder because no-one would ever notice or care. Its also a commentary on how insane their lifestyle is. Getting upset over the stupidest crap like getting dinner reservations, business cards, apartments, etc . It's enough to make someone totally crazy.

Everybody thinks everyone is someone else. Paul Allen thinks he is someone else. His own lawyer thinks he's someone else--and believes he had dinner with Paul Allen, because he interchanged someone else with him too. Everyone is interchangeable. Patrick Bateman is the ultimate capitalist corporate yuppie. A cold, empty, cannibalistic psychopath. He cares about nothing and destroys everything. "I need to return some video tapes." And everyone else just wipes it under the rug. 'Cause they're doing terrible things too. They might not be murderers, or insane; but they're just as indifferent and cold as Patrick is. As to what's real, and what's in Patrick's head...I don't think it really matters. The end shootout where people come back to life and cop cars explode might only be in Patrick's head. Or, at least how he sees it. Either way, this is the reality of the 1980's, It's all real. It's all bullshit.

In summary: I don't think I love American Psycho but I love Christian Bale's performance in it, I wish there was more Willem Dafoe, I'm glad Jean didn't get nail-gunned in the head, and this was a great reaction to kick off horror season!

I did read the novel (after starting it, getting about a quarter of the way through and then *had* to put it down for my own mental health before picking it back up one last time to finish it) and I have to say, I *hate* Bret Easton Ellis's writing. In the novel, there's literally an entire chapter that's just a single whole-ass run-on sentence about all the bougie, brand-name stuff Patrick has in his apartment (I've been writing a long time - BEE's writing makes me wanna chew off my own leg lol). Unfortunately, the novel doesn't really give any kind of definitive answer as to whether or not what we 'see' in the course of the story is real or not. But the concensus among movie reviewers, etc. is that he's just quietly going mad in his head and imagining it all. It's more of an allegory type of piece, really, than a cut and dry narrative. BEE's big on hammering home the 'materialism is bad mmkay' thing. lol
That said, though - I genuinely love the script that director Mary Heron and screenwriter Guinevere Turner (she plays the very sleepy redhead in the later scene at Paul Allen's place) were able to shape the book into. Like, everything that's even remotely funny about the movie is thanks to those two lovely brains of theirs.
I would noooot recommend the book, even as a 'just to take a peek out of curiosity' because it's even more not-safe for life than the movie is and would probably just make you sad. lol I will say, though, that the adaptation of another one of BEE's novels (all of them are kind of set in the same universe of all these hyper-despairing, entitled rich kids in Hollywood), Less Than Zero, is probably one of my favorite 80s movies of all time (which stars Jamie Gertz, James Spader, Andrew McCarthy and a bb!Robert Downey, Jr.). Definitely recommend that movie, but again - I strongly recommend avoiiiiding the books lol

Patrick is a metaphor for corporate capitalism. We give corporations the notion of personhood, yet they are empty shells driven only by image, consumption, etc.
And they do terrible things, they tell us they are going to do terrible things, and we all live, each of us to a different degree, totally ok with it.
