Once Upon A Time in Hollywood (2019) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Steve McQueen was nearly there that very night but picked up a lady on the sunset strip. After it happened according to his wife he got super paranoid. And Hollywood actors homes the fences and walls got bigger so did the security. This and the Hells Angels incident at the Rolling Stones gig was very much the end of the 1960s!

Backlog Andy M.

I can see it perfectly. The movie is blurred out and you just watch your copy along with them. Not sure what the problem is.

Philip Alan

Can’t see your reaction. Paid for both the movie and the membership with all acces. What is that all about?

Jonas Johansen

Great comment, man. I think given the controversy about the scene, a lot of people didn't pick up on that.

Marcus Cato

When Sharon Tate goes to see her movie in the cinema you can in multiple shots see the poster for the spaghetti western The Mercenary from 1968. You’ve heard parts of the soundtrack from that movie being used in both Kill Bill vol.2 and Inglorious Basterds. One of the best amongst a lot of amazing italian westerns made during the 60s and 70s!

Rickard Blixt

Hello, The Manchurian Candidate and the original Oceans Eleven are great Sinatra movies. Most people will say the Great Escape for Steve McQueen but I enjoy Bullit and The Thomas Crown Affair.-great reaction!

Ethan Opus

Oh interesting!! We hadn't thought of it that way -Sam

TBR Schmitt

So glad you enjoyed it, Logan and that you had that knowledge going into the film! Maybe your mind chose to get rid of some of those details, because I'm sure it was rough doing a research paper on it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

It made me so sad to think about what real Sharon Tate had to go through, especially with the way Tarantino really spent time letting us get to know her and just watching her enjoy life after being successful and enjoy her film surrounded by people enjoying it too! I totally had a pit in my stomach thinking Tarantino was going to go there and show it all in the most violent way, because it's Tarantino, but damn it was so much more satisfying this way! Totally agree with your comment! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh no way! I love that the Tarantino universe is so interconnected, but so subtle about it. That's awesome! It's been quite some time since we've seen Inglorious Basterds, but we'll have to take another look at it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww more awesome duos to get to! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes!! Agree so much with this comment! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I'm so glad you liked it! Jackie Brown was excellent! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL no, no they are not -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh no, we completely missed that!! Good catch! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

The Bruce Lee scene (him beating up Bruce Lee) shows that he is an unreliable narrator. You can tell because all the other actors are gone from the scene. It is fantasy.

Michael Kang-Beats

Big yup on all of these recommendations! I don't remember watching that Tate movie.. but I trust that it's a good one.

Logan Kerlee

Wow!!.. yeah, same! As a teenager I did a research paper on the Tate massacre. It was pretty gruesome. I'm glad that we didn't have to experience that on film. I definitely appreciated how brutal Brad Pitt was with those people in there, though. Glad it went down like that.

Logan Kerlee

Definitely a great one to start off with! :) Glad you had a good time Brent.

Logan Kerlee

lol, I may've noticed it but I'm not certain. Such an awesome movie though!

Logan Kerlee

Wow.. that movie was INCREDIBLE! So darn entertaining and interesting while being fun along the way. Years and years ago, back in high school I wrote a research paper on the Tate Massacre. I don't remember many of the details of the crime but this movie was done very well! I enjoyed this quite a bit. Thank you for choosing to watch this. :) I needed this today.

Logan Kerlee

Just finished watching with you guys and wanted to touch on something real quick. Sam, I understand you feeling a bit sad at the end of the movie but I tend to get teary at the ending for different reasons. This movie is very much about the the power of movies and what they can do to our emotions and perceptions. When we saw it in the theater, I loved every second but as the murders grew closer I dreaded it. I couldn’t believe Tarantino would bring us that far with these great characters…and then make us sit and watch these people get butchered, which is what happened IRL, to Sharon Tate especially. And then what happened happened and I can say I’ve never reveled so much in violence in my life, if I’ve ever reveled in it at all. Then, when Rick goes up to meet Sharon, Jay, and friends, it’s catharsis for him, and for us as an audience because the people who openly love Rick the most (other than Cliff, of course) turn out to be the people that, had things gone as they did in life, he would never have had the opportunity to befriend them. That’s of course, if Rick were real. But in this movie he is. And he and Sharon go on. See? The power of movies working on all levels here. Last, by all accounts Sharon was as you see her here…and now she always will be, as this movie stands as a monument and memorial not to how she died, but to the kind of person she was when she lived. And I think Tarantino more than most understands how movies can go forward through the decades and, in some cases, overwrite history and reality. In this case, I think that’s kind of a beautiful thing. Because Sharon Tate was good for movies. And now, she’s part of one more for which people are likely to remember her best.

Jason Chirevas

I've watched this movie several times but it was just this time I catched another Tarantino connection. Last film Rick made in the Italy was directed by Antonio Margheriti. Sounds familiar? That was an alias used by Donny "Bear Jew" Donowitz in the Inglourious Basterds cinema scene played by Eli Roth. Margheriti was an actual Italian director who directed Tarantino's favorite movie Cannibal Apocalypse. It was a great reaction, Sam's face when the ultraviolence started was priceless 😹 If you're a reader, I recommend an eponymous book by QT which expands the story from the movie.

David Lengyel

I'm sure they'll eventually get to it

Jason Dolan

Sadly they'll probably never watch Butch Cassidy - it did poorly in the western poll.

Birdie Num Num

This might be the best movie friendship ever committed to film, up there with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Thelma & Louise

Jason Dolan

I didn't know what to expect form this movie but 're-writing history' was what I read about this and I wasn't excited. Then I saw it. I actually love the ending of this movie. I thought when someone said he was re-writing history it was going to be something different but holy crap I loved the whole 'What-If' feeling about this.

Jack Burton

That was great! I honestly wasn't that excited about it because I've been meh on Tarantino's last few films. This one felt like Tarantino showed some restraint and it honestly makes the film so much better than I was expecting. It actually had characters that weren't all meanspirited assholes. Also, I really like that there was such a big build up to the violent scenes so when it happened it was at least a little shocking. Might be my second favorite Tarantino film next to Jackie Brown. It was to nice to have a feel good ending.

Jeffrey Miller

Neighbour: "Is everybody okay?" Rick: "Well... the fuckin' hippies aren't..." LOL :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Did you notice the flamethrower in the pool shed in the scene where Clif fixes the TV arial? I saw that when I first saw the movie in the theater. At the climax I said to myself “He’s going to get the flamethrower.”

Samolina Pilchard

I was 12 when that movie came out. I sat through all the performances on saturday and sunday, 2 each day as I recall. Had to call my mom and beg her to let me stay.

Opie Wan

But after Enter the Dragon, coz well it's in the movie since it's his life story. If you wanna avoid seeing any scenes from his movies also watch the Big Boss before watching Dragon.

Alex

Oh awesome! Thank you for the recommendation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

So glad you liked it, Brent! We've loved it too! I'm glad we still have a few more :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Very true! The pit in my stomach was real! As I type this our editor is texting me that I was speechless the last 20 mins hahaha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

You're right! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh yes!! Hope you enjoy! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Definitely on our list! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww I love this comment -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha hope you enjoy, Jason! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Maybe he never goes through with anything because of what happened at the house? Good question! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ah yes! She looked familiar! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL we are going all out of order this week haha sorry! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes, such a nice surprise to see him! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Looks like a great list of Polanski films to start with! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yay! Hope you love it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

A really great movie to get to know who Bruce Lee was is Dragon: The Bruce Lee story. It's basically the true(ish) story of his life, and it has a lot of awesome fight scenes.

Alex

I agree with Jason about Repulsion. I actually think it’s one of Polanski’s most overlooked masterpieces. I love that film.

Tim Raths

My first time watch too! Such a great film! And I have loved getting to go on this Tarantino run with you two! 😁😁

Brent

Great reaction, glad you enjoyed it. This is a movie that gets better on repeated watches. The first time I saw it, I was almost sick to my stomach with anxiety. I did NOT want to see the Manson murders, especially after the care Tarantino takes in humanizing Sharon. The second (and third...) time you watch it you can just sit back and enjoy the awesomeness.

Jen Barnes

It's hard to predict horror movies. Some people are scared and others yawn. Same thing with comedies.

David Martin

Yes! Excellent.

David Martin

ROSEMARY’S BABY is as scary now as it would ever be to those who would find it scary. It doesn’t rely on effects or jump-scares, it’s the situation that makes it creepy and disturbing, which was always its vibe. And Polanski’s BTW. His REPULSION is one of the scariest movies ever made.

Jason Chirevas

Chinatown is one my all time favorites.

Opie Wan

For its time, Rosemary's Baby was scary to a lot of people. Today it's totally tame.

Opie Wan

Also Kill Bill vol.2 was basically a western

Odd Thomas

Steve McQueen films to watch first: Magnificent Seven, Bullitt, Great Escape. Sharon Tate in The Fearless Vampire Killers (with Polanski) Bruce Lee: Enter The Dragon Licorice Pizza has a similar nostalgic vibe & look to OUATIH, but it's much more of a romance story Definitely watch From Dusk Till Dawn, it's a great movie!

Odd Thomas

Awesome, this will be my first time watching it! Just gotta get through work!

Jeffrey Miller

I want a flamethrower.

Shaun2342!

good movie especially for those of us who lived through those times. And as for Steve McQueen movie, can't go wrong with The Great Escape which was highlighted in this movie.

Opie Wan

Absolutely.. I "third" this?? wait, is this the correct way to follow up "I second this"?? I don't know.. whatever..

PastaDon

Another great reaction! The alternate universe aspect of the ending is both sad and sweet. A world where the bad people got what was coming to them, and the nightmares never happened. In a cultural sense, that aspect could be lovingly and sorrowfully applied to the larger tragic events of the late 60’s. As a side note, Sharon Tate really did visit an L.A. theater as depicted. There are so many rich moments included, both historic and fictional.

David Wilkins

Grabs can of Pringles. Aight, let's do this.

Jason Dolan

So in this alternate universe does Manson get away with what he wanted done? When Sharon(Margo) watched her movie that was the real Sharon on screen.

softshoes

Wow, I just watched it a few days ago and I feel the opposite. Every time I hear a word like "snoozefest" I think the viewer wasn't willing to stay with a film that didn't have instant action and built slowly.

David Martin

The girl who sold Cliff the acid cigarette played BB in Kill Bill 2 :)

Mike Adams

I just figured I had things all backwards again. As usual. ;D

Steven Montano

(Also, did I miss "Rambo III"?)

Steven Montano

Damian Lewis was spot on as McQueen. That was inspired casting.

Steven Montano

Bullitt might be a classic, but it does not hold up. Its a snoozefest of a film. It certainly is important, but its not a reaction movie.

Erich Bomke

And seeing the Steve McQueen character means you HAVE to watch "Bullitt", another classic.

David Martin

I second this.

Tim Raths

Watch "Chinatown" as your introduction to Roman Polanski. It's a classic.

David Martin

I've never seen this film so the watchalong with you should be interesting
