Fun fact: The Potsdam Conference was a meeting of the allied leaders of WWII to plan the post-war peace.

This was a really significant episode that first season. Not only because of how good it is, but for the huge TV significance of what Tony does. From an interview with Sopranos creator David Chase: When did you feel that your writing really kicked into high drive? I heard it was maybe that fifth episode of the first season, which to this day is discussed as one of the great ones, “College.” "...By the time we got to the fifth episode, the first time Tony killed somebody, I got a call from Chris Albrecht, who ran HBO, screaming about, “How could you do this?! You’ve created one of the most dynamic characters of the past 20 years, and you’re just going to ruin him. You’re going to kill him right now because he kills that guy!” And I said, “Well, then don’t air it.” And he went nuts. I wasn’t trying to be a smartass. And I said “Chris, he’s a captain of a crew, and he comes upon a guy who was a rat. If he doesn’t kill that guy, the show’s over.” And he said, “OK, OK, OK.” But he made me make some small little side thing, that the rat was also selling drugs to kids in high school." Because this was how foreign the idea was that your main protagonist could be … "A murderer. And compared to what I was used to, I made that compromise because I thought, “We’ve got something here, and that’s not such a big deal. And maybe he would be selling drugs. I don’t know.” So I said, “Yeah.” And that was the only time they ever asked me not to do something."

I don't remember when I first started watching The Sopranos, it had already been on a few seasons, but I distinctly remember that this was the episode that hooked me.

"Is he throwing up or did he already finish?" Just what every girl wants to hear ;)

The first of many iconic Sopranos episodes! You mentioned the distinctive directing style of this episode. It's Allen Coulter. Episode 12 is his next one, and I'm sure you'll notice the same unique style when you get to it!

"College" was not only an important episode of the series going forward, but would also set the standard of having an anti-hero as the main character of a TV series. This might be considered the norm with a lot of TV series today, but in 1999, it was completely unheard of. HBO was on the fence about this episode leading up to its airdate, and how it would be perceived by fans and critics. They weren't sure how people would react to Tony, the series "protagonist", murdering someone in cold blood/revenge. Little did they know that viewers ended up LOVING this episode and would catapult The Sopranos to the top of HBO's most watchable content. This episode also paved the way for the Walter White and Dexter type of anti-heroes as it gave studios more confidence to greenlight and finance more of these types of series.

I think you missed the part where Tony and Chris were talking about his terrible sculptures. How the lips he carved were terrible. That's why Tony said 'gotcha' when he saw the carving in the office.

Ahhhh. Episode 5, "College. " This was the episode that changed everything. Not just for The Sopranos, but for a TV series in general. It may not seem like it now, but it was very shocking for a lead character to viciously kill someone. By episode 4 Tony Soprano was already loved by audiences. The folks at HBO were actually afraid to have Tony be the one to kill the guy since he was a lead character. And because he's with his daughter. They thought audiences would hate him for it. They tried to rally against it. That didn't happen. In fact audiences probably liked him more because of it lol. I remember people talking about it after it aired. This was back in 99 so remember TV was already really innocent and not as bold. Anyways this solidified the fact that we could have a ruthless killer as a lead and still love him. We see it with a lot of TV shows now. The success of this episode actually gave the writer of it an opportunity to create a TV show. He created Dexter. So basically this was a very important episode for television.

This is great! And following nice and fast on the heels of eps 3 and 4. The Sopranos was the clinching factor for joining you on Patreon.
