Prey (2022) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Absolutely 💯 love this film 🎥

Backlog Andy M.

My only issue with the film is that it kind of assumes that the predator doesn't understand his own helmet... Other than that it's great...

Logan Nelson

Native American and Scottish eh Sam? I guess that makes you....Brave? No red hair though.

Aaron Barlow

Small role? He got Billy to laugh. That's no easy feat!

Miles E Coburn

Are you going to watch The Predator? Not as good as Prey but entertaining in its own way. It was written/directed by Shane Black, who had a small role in the original.

Odd Thomas

Thanks Sam!

James Willingham III

I love this movie. I still think the original is better, but this is right up there. I guess we should be flattered that they drop down every summer to try and kill us, but I'm also kind of sad that they keep failing. With an advanced species like that and tech they have, you'd they'd be more humble. But I think, I'm not sure, but I think the Yautja they drop off are like teenagers being kicked out of the car at the mall by mom. "Go play your arcade games, kiddo. We'll come get you when I get my long-ass nails sawed off."

Philip Davetas

Great reaction. I loved this film and I love that it hinted a sequel.

Stewart B

AvP goes into a little more of the Predator Human relations

Jason Mangen

This movie reminded me of a pretty awesome Predator comic I got back in the day, called “Jungle Tales”. Its stories took place in Africa, with Predators coming into conflict with a Maasai warrior and a British hunter in the 1930s.

Nick of Time

Sam, I’ll admit I’ve been curious about your ancestry, but didn’t think it appropriate to ask. I too come from Native American (Cherokee) and Scottish lines. What tribe is your family? Are we possibly double-cousins? 😆

Nick of Time

This was really cool to watch. Such a different role for Aubrey Plaza😉🤣👍

Mark M

I loved the premise of this movie but thought it ended up being mostly a gimmick. The Europeans felt like the Americans in Squid Game. All of the references to the previous films felt forced and, unfortunately, again, gimmicky. That being said, the bear fight was fucking awesome. Too bad it was less than a minute in length.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

My second time thru on this one. It was great fun to watch along with you guys. I don't think I've heard Sam say she was native, though those high cheek bones betray her :). It was pleasure seeing Native Americans shone in this light.

softshoes

Definitely enjoyed this prequel! This one was solid. Your reaction was great as well. :) The Predator species makes sure to hunt their prey (whatever they may be on whatever planet) on a similar footing. The reason why the Predator wasn't using a ton of the tech that the one that fought Dutch used is only because it wanted to be on similar footing. lmao, but yeah, this one was a bitch and HAD to use it's cloaking tech in order to fight her brother and the other men. lmao, I wasn't scared by the transitions at all. They were expected and since I grew up watching the original. This one wasn't scary at all, I don't think that it was intended to be. This felt much more like a pure action flick instead of a sci-fi horror/action. I wasn't too hyped on the natives beating this Predator. I mean, that's what sort of movie this is so it has to end that way.. it's just disappointing. Whatever though, it's all good. Movie was fun and I dug on it.

Logan Kerlee

Spectacular prequel. The Comanche version is worth checking out too.

Steve Mercier

Glad you both liked the movie! In the Comanche version when the Predator goes invisible during the fight with the brother, the brother yells, "Cheater!". So, you were not alone in that opinion!

alexray

Based on the logic of PREDATOR 2, they have a respect for any warrior who defeats their hunter in combat. With regards to Dutch, because that Predator vaporized himself there was no reason to retrieve the body. So I dont think they ever knew who Dutch was. But with Danny Glover they clearly knew who he was. Haha.

Jason Dolan

I have to admit I loved every time Daniel referred to the stupid kid the mountain lion pulled out of the tree - "wrecked," "fucked up," etc. For all those guys, it's a tragedy, but the fact they were all SUCH DICKS to Naru makes it just that much harder to shed a tear for them.

Mark

For me it breaks down like this: Prey is a better *drama* than the original; it is very much a character-centric "hero's journey" for Naru, and honestly would have worked just as well with any kind of ultimate monster she had to best. It's like they took the Predator, and built a story around it and made it really matter. You can feel that someone really cared. The original is an exceptional 80's Arnold action-sci-fi, with an unexpected twist of suspense and even horror as they are being mysteriously picked off one by one. Two very different stories, both excellent uses of the idea of the Predator.

Mark

Yay! Thank you, Ed! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We had no idea how this would work haha do you think a trade or do you think they came back and fought again? -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww yay so glad you enjoyed it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Agreed! I think it's a worth prequel! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha aww! Thanks, Guston! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

11. A shirtless native American male (Billy/Taabe) being cut diagonally down across the chest with a big knife to be used as "bait" for the Predator

Mark

Aww thank you so much!! I'm so glad you were able to watch it for the first time with us :) We have not seen NOPE yet! We don't have it on the schedule, but that would be cool to explore! We've really liked Peele's films so far :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I can definitely agree with you! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Love this list! I love when movies (or Cobra Kai) do such a good job on the call backs :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh woah I never thought of that! I assumed it was due to the time difference, but you could be totally right. They have so many rules, maybe they have to use what's appropriate for the type of fight! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh I like this! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww yay! So glad you enjoyed the film! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha SO cool!!! The film turned out great! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL

TBR Schmitt

Oh we didn't realize that it was straight to Hulu! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Hope you enjoyed! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Loved this movie!! Thank you for another great watch along!🙂

Ed Garland

Did you guys notice the Predators came back to collect the body and that's how they got the gun, they most likely made a trade with Naru?

Jason Dolan

whyb cause the shoehorned gun reference from Predator 2?

Ken Veader

Yesss! This was a freakin great movie, and it was super fun to watch it with you two this morning. Thanks for sharing the fun!

Trepanation21

The best compliment I can say for Prey is it completes the Predator series in a masterful way. You know have a true beginning to this series of films.

Anakin Starkiller

Overhead shots is nothing new to the Predator series. Predator 2 opened with several camera tricks. And Predators had a pretty sweeping overhead shots the fog chase. The difference is newer way to do the shot in this.

Anakin Starkiller

Great reaction. Just the right amount of dialog as always and those humorous remarks from you Daniel, like "Yeah! Fuck that guy!!". Always makes me crack up.

Guston Zimasheen

I don't usually like doing first-time watch-alongs with reactors because a lot of them talk over the dialogue (understandably) and I'm really trying to pay attention to the movie first and to the reactor second. But with Sam and Dan it's always a pleasure because they choose the right pockets to comment without disturbing the flow. So... Great reaction, Sam and Dan! It was fun seeing you watch a new movie for a change. I am hoping you will react to the new Jordan Peele film "NOPE". I haven't seen it yet and I'm hearing great things about it. Should I wait for you? 😁

Mr. Writhms

This was a first-time watch-along for me. A lot of the critics are saying this movie surpasses the original. In my opinion, in SOME ways it does. For one, I thought the cinematography and editing were superior to the original. Those great wide-sweeping and over-head shots gave a better sense of the surroundings, as opposed to the mostly medium to tight shots in the original 1987 film. And I found the portrayal of the alien predator's fighting skill and hunting abilities was a lot more fascinating this time out. But there is something to say about the cast of characters in the original movie that I don't think any sequel or prequel will ever take the top spot, as far as I'm concerned. That being said... The cast of characters and the sequence of events in "Prey" were outstanding, no doubt a worthy addition to the franchise. 👍 (I had to break my post into 2 parts. It kept getting deleted.)

Mr. Writhms

ANNND here are the references to the first film that I was able to notice: 1. “if it bleeds, we can kill it” 2. Naru trying to lure it into the trap, saying “come on, come on, do it” 3. bright green Predator blood noticed on a leaf 4. A Native American being an excellent tracker (what if in the lore Billy is a descendant of Naru??) 5. A fierce Native/Latinx young woman 6. getting covered head to toe in mud 7. being swept away down a river 8. Predator digital count-down timer ticking down to an explosion 9. Knocking a weapon out of someone’s hand so the Predator won’t see them as a threat 10. Thick South/North American foliage (jungle vs. forest) Any others to add?

Mark

And a second thought: Were the Predator's weapons more "primitive" than the first movie because it's 300 years in the past, OR was the Predator actually "scaling down" its technology to suit its prey? They still have interstellar travel and cloaking camouflage, I can't imagine they have to do spears and darts. My vote is, 300 years not withstanding, most of his reduced tech levels were intentional. Imagine him using the tech from the first movie - used for the best of the best modern military units - to fight animals, Comanche, and French fur trappers. No Contest.

Mark

Here's a thought: This was Naru's Trial, her right of passage, where as her mom reminds her, it's not just about hunting, it's about surviving. What if her Trial is mirroring why the Predators come to Earth - maybe this is each one proving himself somehow.

Mark

So glad you guys watched this. Watching your reaction was my 3rd time now seeing the movie, and I think I'll likely rewatch your reaction again too.

Mark

I worked on Prey for the better part of a year. When I saw TBR's prediction last year, I cracked up laughing and said out loud "Nailed it!".

James Willingham III

And I had the exact same reaction when they mentioned a lion. :D

Michael G. Munz

Thanks for reacting to this! Perhaps tragically, this movie was never actually in theaters. It premiered directly on Hulu.

Michael G. Munz

WOO HOO!
