Tons more on Cody Rhodes/AEW departure
Added 2022-02-17 20:14:03 +0000 UTCIn the hours that followed Cody and Brandi Rhodes' departure from All Elite Wrestling, more wrestlers were talking. We should reiterate, that plenty knew throughout the weekend ahead of Monday's announcement that something was up, but almost nobody would explicitly state what was going on between AEW and Cody Rhodes. There were mixed feelings and a lot of emotions on both sides of things as Rhodes has been seen as polarizing on and off the screen. However, we've heard plenty of support for th Rhodes' within AEW. We're told that although there were some disagreements, the split was at least "amicable."
There were some positive stories of Rhodes doing things for the roster, like setting up a bar at Daily's Place, then others that said that his tumultuous relationships over the past couple of years had been a detriment. All the way through the process there were people in AEW that believed his entire contract situation was as a work, which waned significantly over the last weekend. Of the dozens of talent and staff across wrestling we spoke to, there was still some skepticism regarding the situation, but almost everyone was of the belief that Tony Khan would not work his own talent regarding this situation as he's seen as a "player's manager" so to speak. Those we heard from said Tony Khan didn't openly discuss the contact matters backstage, to their knowledge.
Regarding Wednesday's AEW Dynamite tapings, we were told by everyone we asked that things were "business as usual," with one person noting that it was a reminder that this is pro wrestling and life goes on. Those that we spoke to said that nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and they don't expect AEW to try to ignore or erase the existence of Cody Rhodes.
We haven't gained a confirmation that Cody Rhodes has signed with WWE as of yet, and until something like that happens, a renewal with AEW could always be reached. However, the impending announcement on Tuesday morning was being actively hyped within WWE, and officials were well aware that a 10 am reveal would be taking place. Word started to spread heavily around 15 minutes prior to that.
Regarding the WWE locker room, the prevailing belief is that Cody Rhodes fell out of power in AEW and wanted a significant raise, but it's important to note that neither AEW officials or the Rhodes' have mentioned that yet.. There was excitement and shock among those that we heard from, including several top stars in the company ready to welcome Cody Rhodes back to WWE with open arms. One top name said that they think it will be great for fans, and considers it the most interesting thing in the company in a long time. Another pointed out that a lot of people on the WWE roster came up with Cody and spent a lot of time with him, and are excited at the idea of him returning. No members of the WWE roster have heard explicitly from WWE that he's reached a deal as of yet.
We've learned several points on the Rhodes side of things, as well. As of Thursday, Rhodes to the Top had not been canceled, and there are still ongoing discussions regarding the future. A Shot Of Brandi is being actively pitched and shopped, which Brandi will retain the rights to. Also, it looks like Brandi Rhodes plans on continuing to pursue in-ring wrestling, as she was spotted training at the Nightmare Factory this week.

This whole situation makes me think good things about Aew. The biggest knock on WCW was they had the boys in charge and the ones in charge just looked out for themselves. With Tony letting Cody go, it shows that TK is the one in charge and nobody is gonna walk over him... I think this show strength in the company and a bright future

2022-02-17 23:20:19 +0000 UTCI love his entrance song. It’s hype. I wonder if he gets to keep it wherever he goes.

2022-02-17 22:54:13 +0000 UTCThis is the firsr report I've seen that even entertains the idea that Cody & Tony Khan could still cut a deal. Has that come from somewhere or is it speculation?

2022-02-17 22:44:22 +0000 UTCJust wanna say that I truly appreciate Fightful's reporting on this. It makes the whole thing more business than personal. Whereas Keller's stuff seemed very much like gossip and bordering on character assassination. I felt it took away the overall professional tone of the amicable split between AEW and Cody/Brandi news.

2022-02-17 21:58:07 +0000 UTCSean - thanks for the great coverage and being a cool guy. I ran into you at All Out 2021 and you were more than friendly. We combined our knowledge of where the shortest concession line was and then went on our way. Hope to see you again at a Chicago show!

2022-02-17 21:35:54 +0000 UTCSo Meltzer said there’s also another big star coming back for mania that’s the same star level of Austin? Do you have any ideas or confirmation? How did this get swallowed up?

2022-02-17 21:15:02 +0000 UTCI have been shocked how much it swallowed up the Austin return

2022-02-17 21:11:09 +0000 UTCThanks for the update SRS, great as always. Can you follow up on pwtorch's report that cody wanted to be the top paid guy and that others found his segments a "liability"? Not saying theyre wrong or anything but always trust your reporting the most...

2022-02-17 20:57:01 +0000 UTCSo are AEW and Cody actively negotiating?

2022-02-17 20:36:57 +0000 UTCI am hopefull that aew and Cody can reach an 🤝
2022-02-17 20:34:14 +0000 UTCAfter a few years of watching the WWE guys jump, albeit after releases or contracts expiring, it's going to be interesting to see how the other side lives—and now navigates—the same open season. Fun time to be a wrestling fan.

2022-02-17 20:31:38 +0000 UTCWith the way Cody has drowned out all discussion of Austin returning, it'd be a bit of egg on WWE face if they couldn't manage to land him after all.

2022-02-17 20:30:36 +0000 UTCThank you for your accuracy in these reports, lots of nonsense flying around but not on Select. This piece alone is worth the $5.

2022-02-17 20:25:46 +0000 UTCIf I really wanted to start and run a company, instead of just work for one; losing the ability/power to shape the public vision of that product, would make me watch out for my interest and that of my family first. If I didn't work for myself, I would be looking for the top bank. If this is the case, I dont blame him and wish him the best. With any luck, they'll both avoid Twitter; as the toxic fans have just been unbearable these last few months.

2022-02-17 20:24:45 +0000 UTCHah, after nearly a dozen people speaking out you’d think everybody would catch on. Unfortunately, even as they’re leaving AEW, some people are so blind-hatred-deranged about Brandi that they’re trying to spin up wild “the public statements in her support were lying” narratives. https://twitter.com/therexwolff/status/1494378580092104709?s=21

2022-02-17 20:23:21 +0000 UTCIt's definitely not a work, but I could still see Cody and AEW working out a deal. A return now would be exciting, especially if he returns as a Heel, blaming the fans who celebrated his leaving, and the like.

2022-02-17 20:21:54 +0000 UTCHappy to hear that everyone was pretty professional during this. Those stories about not having anything nice to say about Brandy seemed like BS

2022-02-17 20:20:40 +0000 UTCThe news with Rhodes to the Top is interesting, but since it was supposed to be a synergy project, I just can’t see it surviving, at least not as a WarnerMedia production. I assume that the lack of mention means no details yet with regards to the future of Go Big Show?
