Major Cody Rhodes update

Fightful has learned that Cody Rhodes and AEW have yet to come to an agreement. Word among the wrestling world is that the two sides have been unable to reach an agreement, and Cody Rhodes could be leaving the company and is headed to WWE.

Update:

Cody Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes have left AEW after they could not come to terms on a new contract. Fightful was told by AEW sources last Friday that Cody sought a big money deal, and several didn't think that a re-signing was going to happen. By that night, numerous people inside and outside the company had knowledge of the situation, and were of the belief that Cody was leaving the company. However, inquiries started to come to Cody directly over the weekend, which he claimed were spun.

Shortly before the announcement, WWE officials were aware of the situation and also knew that an announcement would be dropped. We've heard that the two sides have at the least had discussions, but WWE was well aware that an announcement regarding Rhodes' departure would be made at 10 am EST.

About 15 minutes before Cody's announcement, word had also spread to AEW talent that he was leaving the company.

Cody Rhodes and Brandi haven't been quite as connected to the locker room in recent years as when AEW started, with word emerging that Cody had become distant from other EVPs.

Fightful will have more details on the situation, and this article will be constantly updated.

UPDATE 2:  In an update on the Cody and Brandi Rhodes AEW departure, the locker room began talking last Wednesday, when neither were seen in Atlantic City for AEW Dynamite. Leading up to that, many talent that we spoke to were suspicious that Cody Rhodes' entire contract situation had been a work, with a lot of question marks regarding the legitimacy. However, they came to realize that the situation was real. It became clear to a few by Friday that a deal likely wouldn't be reached.

We've heard from AEW sources that some had reached out to Cody over the weekend, but the situation was downplayed, and he even said that word of him leaving was conjecture, and he was simply negotiating. Those that had spoken to him say that he claimed he loved working with AEW and Tony Khan. There are several production employees in AEW who were partial to working with Cody Rhodes, as he went to bat for them within the company.

Despite reports to the contrary, Fightful never gained a confirmation that Rhodes to the Top would be returning for a second season, despite asking WarnerMedia, AEW and TNT numerous times. Those we spoke to in AEW have not seen any filming for the program taking place of late. There are hopes that other wrestlers can be featured on reality programs, with Darby Allin being filmed of late.

We've not yet heard of any non-compete attached to an EVP separation, but Cody's deal expired at the end of December. Rhodes' team has spoken with WWE, who were aware that the AEW departure announcement would be coming at 10 AM.

EDIT: We had a typo. Obviously it's Brandi leaving, not Tony

No

Corey Moore

Is he still an EVP?

All Elite Dan

I have to say that of the guys that joined initially after leaving WWE; Jericho, Cody and Mox. I always thought that Cody was the one most likely to return for an extended run. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Corey Moore

Tony leaving would make things interesting 😆 🤣 😂

Marshall Enloe

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

BusyBrody

Smart decision by him. They’ll use him right this time around

Matt

hopefully means both will be cancelled lol

Deputy JJ

I'm here refreshing every 15 minutes having to prove I'm not a robot lol

They say its not a work because It will be toxic in the locker room. But if its not a work, its going to be more toxic towards his career.

Wizard Of Smoke

What does this mean for their reality show and him being a judge on Go Big Show?

Give me Triple H vs. Cody!

Eddy Lindenstein

I've never been more shocked about someone leaving. I don't understand at all.

CSDX

very concerning and strange if he goes back to the E.

What does this mean for Nightmare Factory? Does that have any affect at all?

Chris Hernandez

Totally understand the pride of wanting to go back, but man, he seems hypocritical to go off and create this ‘we’ movement only to go… there? Just feels so backwards. If we had the Cody of the start of AEW, this would feel like a massive loss. As is, much less so. I just can’t imagine he hasn’t heard the horror stories since he’s been gone… very strange, EVP drama or not.

Kyle Sarrazin

This is crazy. Cody shouldn’t go back to WWE. He should go back to the relaunched version of Ring of Honor in April. But this still seems like a work.

Leron Ford

Wait… DONT SAY WE JUST SAT THROUGH THOSE GOD AWFUL BRANDI DAN LAMBERT PROMOS FOR NOTHING?! this has to be a work of some kind. Because damn lmao.

MSchwed27

Popcorn anyone? Who has the popcorn? I know what I'm paying attention to all day...

Patrick Henson

NWO type invasion coming to the WWE soon. Now I wonder if all those budget cuts are in part due to this lol.

Haddox

Every talent situation and capabilities is different, WWE will spend for the value that bringing him back is going to deliver.

Brickbat

Khan is making the right decision. Nothing Cody nor Brandi have brought to the company recently warrant that type of deal. I would give that deal to MJF before I even thought about giving it to Cody. And while the Rhodes name still carries some cache in the wrestling business, it is like Jericho. AEW doesn't need to rely on it/him anymore.

Trent Hill

How does the EVP part work? That wasn’t a separate contract?

I'm too stunned at the news at the moment. I can only imagine that WWE had to bend over backwards TREMENDOUSLY to get him back. And with what they're currently doing with Mustafa Ali, I can't see Cody ignoring that and the budget cut releases.

Sheila Antonio

This will go down as either the greatest, or worst work departure since Pillman.

Jeff Greatens

Not to mention his freaking entrance music even. Seems so freaking hypocritical, especially considering WWE haven’t improved at all. They still do the same shit that made him want to leave.

Steveisnotmyname

No big lost

I’m sure AEW was offering him plenty of money, at least as much as he has been making, and more than enough to keep up his lifestyle, not to mention what he makes from his TNT shows. For him to leave the company he helped found and was often times the public face of doesn’t seem right. If this is true, he’s going to be seem as a massive heel in real life, not just his his character on TV. And to go back to WWE after everything? Hypocritical as hell. Man, maybe all this face/heel Homelander Cody stuff wasn’t a work after all, and he really is just a douche that lacks any self-awareness. I don’t know.

Steveisnotmyname

This is just a WEIRD move. All his undesirable to undeniable promos, the shots at HHH and WWE, the shows on Turner networks, the outreach...to just leave for a big contract from the company that never saw anything in you to begin with? Never hate on someone doing right for their family but what a strange decision.

Sean had reported previously that it was both. He had no contract at all with AEW anymore.

Steveisnotmyname

Well nevermind :/

Shmingy Dingy

Cody and Brandi fit much better in WWE than AEW. Neither of them should be unscripted as much as they were and In my opinion Cody was the worse wrestler in 85% of his matches. When I watch AEW I watch for work rate and wrasslin. When I watch WWE I watch for sport entertainment. Cody is one of the best Sport Entertainers. Maybe we get Seth vs Cody at Mania since Seth has no direction now, esp if Kevin Owens gets up with a certain legend

Is it just his talent contract that expired? How does the EVP contract work?

Brent Degenhardt

Seems like Cody is shooting for bigger tho than just a WWE run. At least, I hope he is.

Dirty Jose

Feels like I'm getting worked still lol

Who ever did that typo 😂😂😂 but seriously if this doesn’t end up being a work and he’s actually headed to WWE…Cody would be seen as a massive hypocrite. I know time changes things and money does too, but it feels super eh to me. Like, I just don’t know if I’ll view Cody the same after this.

Bryant Heath

This is sad to me. I just don’t trust WWE creative.

David Wikeley

Wow, that's disappointing.

Will Landrum

Gotta hand it to Cody. I’m gonna be watching every single episode of Rhodes to the Top season 2 lol

Emma Berthiaume

If that’s truly what you believe then that’s foolish. Vince is stubborn and often times clueless, but he’s business smart enough to know that bringing in “Cody Rhodes” as opposed to “stardust” would draw more money.

Joseph Pegoraro

Cody going back to WWE he's gotta win the WWE/Universal title right away

Ant

CODY AND TONY LEFT? WHAT IS GOING ONNN?? (Obviously a miss typo but it's hilarious)

José Menéndez

Cody and Brandi surely have left not Tony. Think that would be the biggest story possible

Cameron Hutton

Lmao, BIG TYPO. Brandi not Tony

Fightful Select

It would depend on the why. If Cody leaves for WWE it could very well destroy the credibility of AEW if it was a TK issue. But if what a lot of fans have been memeing about is true and Cody really has become "reign of terror" triple h, it destroys Cody's drawability forever

Tyler Buuck

How do you sit on this and not suffer? SRS showing why he's got that 8 year contract

Brian The Dean

These are real emotions we’re all experiencing and sharing right now. No suspension of disbelief, no focusing on ring-work, this is real back-and-forth, will-he-won’t-he drama. I personally think this is a work (the best since Punk leaving with the belt at MITB) but lets say he goes over to WWE. More eyes on AEW GUARANTEED. If Vince handles him well, more eyes on one of the FOUNDERS of AEW. If Vince buries him, it just pushes the idea that Vince is off his rocker and “backstage morale” will be even lower than it already is. WHAT A TIME TO BE A WRESTLING FAN.

julian

I think everyone would like to know what happened behind the scenes to make Cody not want to stay with a company he helped start!!!!

Michael Ryan

I… I was about to say I couldn’t believe this but AEW just announced both Brandi and Cody are leaving the company so 🤔

I'd love to see Cody go home to WWE. He more than proved how great he is, seeing him return would probably heal my kidneys lol

ItsWildBoy

Isn't Cena also on that network?

Dirty Jose

WOW! That’s crazy! No one seems more ingrained in AEW (and TNT) than Cody. He’s been the face of the company since the beginning. I know this is wrestling, and in wrestling you can never say never, but this is incredibly surprising. I guess Cody really is as old school as anyone in the industry today. Of course, this could all be a big work by him and Tony, even working those inside the company who are Sean’s contacts, all to play into Cody’s interesting face/heel-ambiguous character. I guess we’ll see.

Steveisnotmyname

Maybe he needs some content for season 2 of Rhodes to the top

Raul Ortega

Well that's great timing

This has to be a work of some sort. Why on earth would he go back? To be damn stardust again? I mean, think about how long he wasn’t even able to use his damn name. He would be the biggest mark in the entire industry if he went back over there.

Travis Selvidge

This is a Work right?

Wesley

I’ll believe it when I see it but still holly shit

Taylor Verley

Work work work work work

CBDeezNuts

Maybe WWE promised him a spot in the KO-Stone Cold match at WM? 😲

Ivan Yagolnikov

Stardust has entered the chat

RyanDubz

CODY VS ROMAN WE NEED IT NOW

Justin Rogers

Cody vs Stone Cold confirmed?!

Cody rhodes wants to be apart of the most stupendous two night premium live event in sports entertainment history

AH

Don’t do it Cody! Don’t do it!

Shaun V.

It's a work

Dan Franks

This feels like a work.

Shmingy Dingy

Oh my lord. The internet would break

Daniel Perry

Heheh I love it

They've got to be working us, right?

WOW

4_kevin

Wow, the first one to go back. Doesn’t surprise me, always thought he would end up back there especially with the connection his family has

Is this an out of season April fools joke?

This has to be a work, right? Because they would book him into oblivion if he actually went back.

Leron Ford

ya...I don't believe this at all but if he leaves then that means he's taking Brandi with him

Good luck on that one, Cody.

Bruce Carlson

I just feel like Cody is so ingrained in the TNT, tbs family of shows as a personality I would find it weird for him to go to wwe

Daniel Laudato

It’s not April 1st though…

Carlos Villalba

Back to the fed??

Colt

What in the world is happening in the wrestling world this week!? 🤯

Nick banda

Early April fools joke? Lol

Colt Baudoux

This has to be them just drawing up attention. I highly doubt Cody is leaving.

Phil Ouimette

Wowzers. Hope this is incorrect. So much for wrestling for the love of it and not in it for the money.

LinzeeBee

Well then

Andrew Bates

woo boy…

Bryant Heath

Please say sike
