WWE making overtures towards Stone Cold Steve Austin for WrestleMania match
Added 2022-02-15 02:29:56 +0000 UTCIn a shocking move, WWE backstage chatter suggests that WWE is going to attempt to get Stone Cold Steve Austin for a match at WrestleMania 38.
Fightful has learned that WWE has made a significant overture towards one of the biggest draws in WWE history "Stone Cold" Steve Austin for an in-ring return at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, Texas. Austin has not wrestled in 19 years, with his last match taking place at WrestleMania 19. Since then, many WWE Superstars have tried to conjure Austin out of retirement, but it hasn't happened out of yet.
Fightful reached out to WWE in an official capacity, but haven't been given any concrete information. Those that we asked within WWE have had a range of responses, from being coy, to saying they assume it will happen. We're told that at the very least Austin is expected for a physical role. We spoke to many on the roster that claimed that Kevin Owens was being set up for that role based on his anti-Texas angle on Raw, but that was far from confirmed either.
This was the story heavily teased with cryptic tweets in wrestling media throughout the day.
In an update, we've been able to confirm that this was discussed as far back as January, and Kevin Owens is the opponent internally.

If Cody chooses WWE over AEW, I don't see him ever getting cheered again.

2022-02-15 05:04:33 +0000 UTCI was initially thinking with KO's Raw promo burying Texas that we were headed towards an Austin/HBK/Taker beat down at Mania for him in a promo -- but you know what, I could see it maybe happening. I could truly see Stone Cold coming out there and having a desire to put on a decent match that isn't just a few punches and a Stunner -- something akin to Rock vs Rowan. If Austin were to agree to come back and have a match, there is no doubt in mind he'd be doing believing that he can. If it happens, I expect it to for sure be a passably enjoyable match.
2022-02-15 04:57:45 +0000 UTCcould see vince wanting to give austin theory the stone cold rub 😅😀
2022-02-15 04:35:20 +0000 UTCMaybe they will change minds and call Shane back after all.

2022-02-15 03:43:20 +0000 UTCLove Austin, but this is terrible. Beating someone (KO?) would suck, losing as an old man would suck. Just let it go. Ugh.

2022-02-15 03:32:25 +0000 UTCNope. This reeks of desperation.
2022-02-15 03:25:48 +0000 UTCAustin returning to the ring ain’t going to happened, even you throw big amounts of menu towards him, he will say no in the end!
2022-02-15 03:22:32 +0000 UTCAn Austin v KO promo battle ending with a Stone Cold Stunner should be highly entertaining. However, I can't realistically imagine any physicality beyond that.

2022-02-15 03:13:17 +0000 UTCTaker could barely move toward the end. Austin don't look like the most limber person anymore. A match would be ugly. Austin just dropping KO with a stunner, I am good for that pop.
2022-02-15 02:59:39 +0000 UTCObviously , no one but him knows his finances but it doesn't seem like he would NEED the $$. He still has at least one tv show, his pod, and I'm sure still gets lots of merch revenue. Now he very well may just WANT that payday,, in which case can't blame the man.

2022-02-15 02:56:30 +0000 UTCNow Owens ripping on Texas has a reason.

2022-02-15 02:41:02 +0000 UTCOwens would be a good choice. That being said, no way. Austin is almost 60 and wouldn't be able to deliver the match he would want to. Unless, of course, he needs the money, they pay him 7 figures, and he doesn't care if it sucks. If they paid me 7 figures, I wouldn't give a damn if it sucked.

2022-02-15 02:35:18 +0000 UTCMan I love Stone Cold. He is my favorite wrestler ever. I don’t wanna see this man wrestle again. It’s been 20 years, I couldn’t stand seeing him wrestle as a shell of himself.
