Fightful Select has learned that the current AEW TNT Champion Cody Rhodes is technically a free agent. Cody's contract expired at the end of 2021, and he's been working in All Elite Wrestling without a contract ever since.
Based on sources we followed up with in AEW this morning, we're told that some have known about this over the past several weeks.
In speaking with Sports Illustrated recently, Cody stated “As of now, my future is with AEW,” he says. “AEW would be very strange without the core members of the revolution. We all still talk. We all have this admiration for each other. I can’t see myself anywhere else, and I’m very optimistic about what the future holds.”
In addition, we've heard there were some originally reported contract lengths in AEW that differed from what they actually were. We'll work to clear some of those up as best we can in the coming weeks.
We've reached out to Cody for comment, but we've not heard back. AEW officials noted recently when we inquired that they won't discuss the contract status of talent.
UPDATE: We've had a lot of inquiries regarding Cody's status as an EVP, or if there's a separate contract in relation to him. We haven't heard back from Cody Rhodes directly, but were told that "he's a free agent, with no contract with AEW at the moment." We haven't been able to confirm this beyond that statement.

Yeah my bad. That’s the point I was trying to get to. I just worded it all stupidly. Tony’s a smart guy. I just can’t see a situation where he let Cody win the TNT Title like a week before his contract expired unless he was pretty confident he wasn’t going anywhere in my opinion,

It’s always a smart crowd anyway so just pick 15 WWE talents for each and let everyone else be from Japan, AEW, Impact, and the indies

Maybe he’s plotting that out with Tony where he actually has creative control vs going to WWE. If he goes back to WWE he takes a chance on what they do with him, but they could also give him a lot of pub. Cody has 2 shows both on Warner networks-why would he go anywhere else?
