Hoodwinked - AniMat's Classic Reviews

Let’s investigate the case of one of the most fascinating animated films, Hoodwinked. In this review, I’ll be inspecting what made this fairy tale parody a fan favorite who many say can be considered on par with Shrek. However, with its great script, it also comes with some terrible animation. It’s a mystery if a great story can stand on its own while still having some of the worst animation.

Actually it's the little mermaid

The Weinstein Company would have had more successful animated films if it wasn’t for you-know-who executive meddling with the rest of their animated films!

Hunter O'Laughlin

Okay point made I can't wait for this lol 😀✌️

Mat, I honestly have to say that this is by far your best review yet where you took it as both a fan and critic while not putting the film down as much for what it lacked with the animation while also looking at what it did have to work with and the other positive aspects such as the story and the well written characters. I remember when I first saw this when it was in theaters as a kid and mainly due to Xzibit since I was in my reality show phase cause of Pimp my Ride. But as a story and what it presented, I enjoyed it. I know that I didn’t mind the animation as I never understood the sense of quality until much later in life. But looking at it now, yeah it is one of those films that had animation that had the quality that was ment for straight to video, but I never minded it as I found the story as I think back to it as fascinating. From the final product and the making of it when I became a member here in its early days and you did that fantastic history video. I would have never guessed that it had a budget of under $8 million. And now as I look at movies more and more when it comes to budgets, as well as the story, I have to make sure that anything over or under has to keep up with the heart and quality of the story. And that was a fantastic way you put it at the end of the review regarding having substance over style as that is something I highly focus on in these movies and shows or whatever I watch or read. It is that kind of thing that made me want to be a reviewer (not like on YouTube but more on a chat forum where I review Weekly Shonen Jump manga titles) where I have to always question if a story is good where even if the art is good, it means nothing without a good story and characters that will make me invested. And sure enough I have had my encounters where I have seen stories that are like Hoodwinked, bad art but actually great characters and an interesting story. I am glad that you finally got to review Hoodwinked and gave everything in this review and I am glad that you got the gift that keeps on giving as we get to see your next ACR of The Little Mermaid. I can’t wait for it and to hear what you have to say. But if I have to give my opinion before the review, since it was the last of the hand painted cel animated movies along with it using the xerox process, I actually think it is the cleanest looking one from Disney at the time while still using xerox. So the level of quality was a significant step up before the full transition to computers and full digital by using CG and CAPS (while still using hand drawn of course to go beyond what they could have done when using the multi plane camera).

Hoodwinked I consider the Rocky & Bullwinkle movie done right

Well what do you know, an animated movie from the defunct The Weinstein Company that was actually good with a good rating. When it comes to Hoodwinked, I have grew up with it as a kid when it came out on DVD and while the animation looked terrible especially how it ages poorly now it days due to a limited $8 million budget, the rest was solid with the creative story, good voice acting, funny comedy, memorable characters, and a clever script upon making a whodunnit take of the classic Red Riding Hood story. I had a good time with over the years especially it has becoming a meme in pop culture particularly with Boingo with that one scene. While it no where near the levels of the first two Shrek films, but I say it one of the better fairytale parody movies along side Enchanted too. Also, I have seen the sequel in theaters as a kid too and yeah it sucks which the only thing that was memorable was the rhino pushed away scene and that was only it. For The Little Mermaid, I say it about time given upon only seeing just the sequel, prequel, live action remake, and history of it without talking about the original itself. Hope The Little Mermaid review will put an end to looking everything of the franchise before moving on to something else.

I really like this movie, I definitely think this the prime example of an animated film that despite having terrible animation the script is solid, and in terms of fairytale parody animated films, while I don’t think it’s on par with the first 2 Shrek movies, it’s still a very solid movie. So the next classic review is The Little Mermaid, the animated film that kicked off the Disney Renaissance.

Justin Monti

All right! The Little Mermaid is next! It’s about time you review that one after reviewing the direct-to-video sequel and prequel and the live-action remake and like your Hoodwinked! review, I can imagine you have a lot to say about the film during your review considering how significant it is to both Disney and animation.

Hunter O'Laughlin

Well, it’s finally here. After reviewing the terrible sequel and doing an editorial taking about the history of the film, you’ve finally reviewed the original and this was definitely worth the wait and just as good as your editorial on the film. I remember watching this film as a kid when it came out on DVD and having a fun time with. I eventually rewatched it on Netflix years later and unlike most animated films I watched as a kid that I enjoyed only to realize how badly they’ve aged, I’m glad this is one that held up years later even if the animation ironically didn’t. It’s such a shame the Weinstein Company had a great start in the animation field with this and just went downhill with their later animated films like the sequel and Escape from Planet Earth. I wonder what went wrong… oh, yeah right, The Weinsteins. 😒

Hunter O'Laughlin

Sure am!

Ah this film, It's is definitely true with how looks can be deceiving. I remember I was one of those people that actually believed this film was going to be flat out terrible. Or as bad as the sequel when that came out since that came how I expected this film. But then eventually I finally saw it when Mom finally convinced me to watch it considering to "not be judging things before even seeing it" Of course I grew to like it. In fact I remember this was more like the "Anti-Shark Tale" of it's time. Although I always did think in this day of age, this movie has a opportunity to being like a fun reanimation project that you would often find on YouTube like with Shrek and The first SpongeBob movie. I'm not saying it so bad that you wish it look better, but I do think it can show some creativity for people to put their own spin on to the scenes to add more enjoyability. Still though It won't change my thoughts that this is possibly the most underrated film of it's time!

Looking forward to the next Classic Review? I know I am!

Hunter O'Laughlin

Nope, The Little Mermaid.

Hunter O'Laughlin

It’s just like what Nicky Flippers said. “ You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

Bryce Gundy

Aw man, was hoping the scoring would be a bit more lenient since the writing is so good. Kind of like a reverse “Walking with Dinosaurs” situation, where the film would’ve been a 4.67, but you gave it a 3 because of the abysmal voice overs.

John

The Little Mermaid! Alright!

The Little Mermaid

Shane Vance

There never was a full sequel to beauty and the beast. 2 prequels. Little Mermaid has both a sequel and prequel and a live action remake

Anthony Estrada

Hoodwinked may look poor with its’ animation, but the clever storytelling and witty characters made the movie a lot of fun! It’s one of my favorite non-Shrek films next to Enchanted. The review you did is a long time coming, and I can say it’s definitely worth it! As for the next review, oh boy, we’re eating good next month, we finally arrive at the first film that kickstarted the Disney renaissance, it’s one little movie that we’re going under the sea!

Toontastic Juju

Oooo Animat is going to review the Disney classic beauty and the beast for his next animated classic review I'm so hyped for it lol 😇✌️

Ethan Jerez

It's beauty and the beast

Ethan Jerez

God i have fond memories of this film. It's definitely poorly animated but damn they did well on everything else.

Lady Helen Bio Rodriguez

Looks like the next review will be The Little Mermaid, this should be interesting

So he's going to review The Little mermaid
