Mufasa: The Lion King - AniMat's Reviews

Experience the origins of one of the greatest Disney dads in Mufasa: The Lion King. In this review, we will see the interesting twist of this being a prequel that tells the story of Mufasa’s rise to become the king of the Pride Lands. However, since this is a follow-up to the hated 2019 remake of The Lion King, can this succeed where its predecessor failed as one of Disney’s live-action remakes that’s actually good?

Let's hope sonic 3 gets a 9/10

OK, I know you’re the Executive, but that performance still had me seeing red. Bravo!

I did watch the Mufasa prequel before seeing Sonic 3 and I’ll get it off my back is that despite some improvements, I still find it a crappy corporate made prequel film. I hate the 2019 remake when I saw it in theaters and I thought I find it soulless as I find nothing but a shot for shot recreation of the 1994 film but in CG on top of no little to no expression on the animals. Since it gross over $1.6 billion at the box office, I knew sooner or later that Disney would try to exploit this remake into a prequel but I was not expecting to bring Oscar winning filmmaker, Barry Jenkins, into this film despite known for making small budget indies like Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk for example which I have seen both of them and are fantastic. I understand what he was going through as an experiment for him to try a big budget blockbuster but filmed on a virtual environment. That and so he could get some big paychecks but personally for me, I would’ve prefer him making more small budget indie films because big major studios like Disney would try to interfere his works instead of letting of him do his own thing and look what happened. I see almost no sense of creative freedom from him and felt like it was directed by somebody else. The story feels uninspiring, the writing was weak, pacing was all over the place, characters were bland, the heart feels empty, the humor feels forced especially with Timon and Pumba cutting in too much, and I even find the new songs from Lin Manuel-Miranda to be forgettable which I gotta disagree on Mat in case with the songs on this prequel as I didn’t find most of them catchy and out of place at times for a Lion King movie. For positives, the animation and visuals did improve a bit to make the animals more expressive, voice acting were okay but hit or miss at best, and Jenkins’s directing did the best he could with the materials given to make out of something. Oh and the tribute of James Earl Jones at the beginning was touching given his recent passing so that nice. So yeah, I still dislike this movie given I grew up with the original and even the direct to home media films were so much better than this which I would rather watch again since those movies were enjoyable to watch. As far with the best friends turn enemies storyline type movies, Wicked and Transformers One were better and highly recommend to check those films out. Even Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a better alternative to watch than this as I seen it three times, two out of three were with friends. Yeah I know I’m being so much hard and harsh over on a over on $200 million budget film for kids, I’m just mad for how Disney took Jenkins away for several years on other things he could’ve focused on to make something like the next Moonlight or something. Just sticking up to filmmakers is all I’m saying. Other than that, it a waste of time, don’t go out and see it.

Merry Christmas, AniMat! I honestly have no interest in seeing this film. I’ll still acknowledge that it had some effort compared to the 2019 remake and did try to fix the CGI animation on the animals that was criticized 5 years ago to have them more expressive and paying tribute to the original voice of Mufasa, James Earl Jones. I guess you could say it’s technically an improvement over its predecessor, but still doesn’t have anything that grabs my interest to see this. I’m honestly not really missing much if I don’t see this film.

I think Wicked is its own thing with some elements inspired from The Wizard of Oz (1939) like the Wicked Witch of the West being green and the ruby slippers, and elements taken from the original books by L. Frank Baum.

I will admit Mufasa, seem like a pretty cool idea as a prequel movie, I'll even state I did had a good time listening to the soundtrack beforehand. But of course they couldn't keep that straight forward, it's almost like a curse for all movie based on already existing IPs. Heck Even Wicked was the better film this year that actually takes it's time to get to know the cast, great visual aspects amazing songs, I would even say Has a Good Reason to Be Live Action! I could only hope it's not a prequel to the MGM film. This is what I think and hate about prequels, it's almost a curse in itself! It's fine to make a film as if it were it's own thing, it makes it even more interesting to know the backstory of the cast itself, but if it were based on something that already exist, it kinda hurts the previous movie by making it look BAD in comparison. Like Star Wars for example Why have Darth Vader when other characters like Darth Maul or General Grievous are more cooler! I'm Just saying...

I must have missed that I didn't really know

Mat took a poll on YouTube on which style he should use and the majority wanted him to review it like it was one of their live action remakes.

Okay Not complaining here, but honestly why does this had to be a special review? Even I was convinced this is more of an animated film. Alright all that aside, I thought the Lion King remake was... okay. What do you all expect? it a remake with Real Animals, they don't really express in real life, It's one of the reason I often Hate realism!

Merry Christmas AniMat, this review is definitely a great Christmas present. When it comes to the 2019 Lion King remake I honestly just consider that movie meh, it just feels absolutely unnecessary and just a watered down version of the original, much like most of these Disney live action remakes, and when it comes to this prequel movie I honestly had no interest in watching this movie and I’m definitely not missing much, while it definitely has interesting ideas and has good elements to it, it’s pretty much has some of the problems that plagued the 2019 remake and much like most of these other Disney live action remakes, it’s pretty much just feels forgettable, and honestly this is why I’m glad I went to watch Sonic 3 instead of this, and I’m definitely looking forward to your review of that.

I hope Barry Jenkins the director got a solid paycheck. He seems to already interested in his future projects. Good on him.

Not to sound impatient or anything like that, but when is your top 5 best and worst animated films of 2024 releasing?

Bryce Gundy

I’m happy that me and my family went to see Sonic the Hedgehog 3 last Friday instead of this! Also, Merry Christmas!

Toontastic Juju
