Heavy Metal, The Style Guide

A style guide is basically a set of rules or guidelines that define how something looks and feels. In drawing, it’s like a blueprint that helps you understand what makes a particular artistic style unique—things like how lines are drawn, how shadows are used, or how textures are created. It’s not about copying but about learning the “why” behind the choices.

For example, think about Grebennikov’s style. His bold shadows, detailed textures, and willingness to take risks make his work stand out. Using this example of his work to write a style guide recommendation might focus on creating dramatic contrast, using texture to add depth, and embracing imperfections to keep the work expressive and alive.

You can create your own style guide by paying attention to what you love about other artists’ work. Is it the way they use light? The way their lines feel loose and confident? Once you know what grabs you, practice it. Don’t try to tackle everything at once—focus on one thing, like experimenting with shadows or playing with texture. Behavioral studies show that learning works best when you break it into small, manageable steps and practice regularly.

The more you try things out, the more you’ll develop your own unique style— but lets not get ahead of ourselves. In the next lesson we will apply the 9 rules in this guide in a control environment: a sphere drawing in the style of Grebennikov...

This study is worth a billion+. I've worked with it and have only gotten better with my contours and shading of those contours. Ty Stephen. 👍🏼🍵🔥
