Composition for Portraiture, Intro
Added 2023-07-30 08:47:52 +0000 UTCRecently I undertook a research that has changed the way I approach my own work and by extension how I teach drawing.
In a series I am going to share with you what I have learned through 3 extensive critique sessions with an artist who studied and taught at the Repin Academy in St. Petersburg.
Here is what you will find:
- Composition- the straw that stirs the drink, so to speak.
- Artistic Selection- what you can change about what you see and how.
- The Focal Point- how to choose and emphasize the key feature of your image.
- Silhouettes and Framing- what makes shapes stand out or fade away.
I am really excited to share this course with you all. I believe the concepts and techniques you learn will truly change the way that you draw.

2023-09-16 17:41:19 +0000 UTCI'm really excited about this! I lived in Russia in the early nineties and became a huge admirer of Illya Repin and the other "Peredvizhniki" as he and his contemporaries were known. Unfortunately, that was before the age of the internet and I was never able to take any art courses there. It will be so interesting to take this journey with you!

2023-07-31 17:05:29 +0000 UTCThere are a number of Russian teachers at Repin who left and teach elsewhere. We need more of them to come to the West because American artists studying at the Repin Institute is going to be a thing of the past. Risky for the artists, politically untenable; not even sure if they will continue to be allowed to study there. Communism was good for this one thing as it supported traditionally trained artists and preserved the information at a time this information was scarce in the West. But there must have been differences in their training even then. I believe the Repin Institute did open a school in Florence so artists can study there. Not sure if it is still open. Incredible draftsmen, very selective and almost impossible to get in there. That is what I like about you, always searching for old and new information, not close minded and insisting on one way of working, investigating any and all aids that could help one become a better draftsman, and bringing the information out of the ateliers and sharing it with the masses. Many artists cannot go to an atelier, either because of finances, location, various reasons. Now they have you. And Cecelia as well.

2023-07-30 19:47:14 +0000 UTCLove this because lately I've been thinking about the why's of artist's selection and what makes shapes stand out and fade away. Thank you, Stephen for this! Looking forward to it.
