Studying with Sargent, Part 3, Refined Edition

Part 3 finally! Lets wrap this project up the right way- with well organised opaque brushstrokes and fresh color values.

A couple of unrelated things you should also know:

There is an ongoing bug related to the use of my navigation site and Patreon on mobile devices. It involves the "handoff" between the web browser and the Patreon app. Basically the Patreon app pulls up a post with no video available where it should be. I don't know how many of you are experiencing this problem but I want to say 2 things about it:

The Atelier Tier returns on April 1st with our first CAST PAINTING lesson! See you there.

Studying with Sargent, Part 3, Refined Edition

Comments

Hi Daniel, it is a good hypothesis that you present. The advent of glazes and scumbles can indeed be very efficient and I use them in my own work. For Sargent however, his technique is known to have been very dorect with little to no glazing involved. For the student especially the choice and application of discreet and opaque colors is much more instructive.

Hi Stephen, great work. I’m wondering if Sargent did/would have laid in an initial block in and let it dry before coming back to add an entirely new layer, as opposed to painting the portrait in purely alla prima style (sorry I’m uneducated but am using the term “alla prima” to mean painted in a single session wet on wet). Also, I recognize this process of painting a single layer, waiting for it to dry, and then painting an entirely new layer is a common practice, but I’m wondering why is that advantageous to alla prima painting? Otherwise, if painted in multiple layers, wouldn’t the most efficient technique be to apply the second layer in a thin, oil glaze? I apologize if this comes off as a critique about your process. I don’t mean it as such. Rather, I trust your mastery, but would like to understand your reasoning so that maybe it will help me follow faithfully. FYI still on the Psyche of Napoli, but cannot deny my aspirations and admiration for Sargent. Thank you, and happy painting.
