Studying With Sargent, Part 2, Real Time

Here is the 1st pass in color and also a clear description of the materials in use. I know there is a lot of enthusiasm about this one so, HERE WE GO!

Should we do a group critique on this stage? Let me know in the comments.

If you use pure oil from the start, how can you follow the rule of "fat on lean" later?

Jean Pierre Daviau

I use a little bit of Spectra Fix to fix the drawing- and usually I use the same brushes throughout- just cleaned with a bit of linseed oil.

Did you use a fixative on the drawing before painting ? And do you switch brushes each time you clean your palette for a new colour ?

Catherine Higgins

He was a direct painter but was known to paint in layers. Not with an underpainting per se but direct in layers.

i thought Sargent was an Alla Prima man, exclusively ? Sanders has a study of Lady Agnew you might be interested in: bit.ly/3i89zeu

The oil paints themselves, as far as I am aware, do not have any significant off gassing. Really it is just linseed oil oxidizing. I would reccommend you to be careful about secondary contamination like paint on your clothing getting in to the washing machine for instance- or from your hands to the doorknobs in the house.

Hi Stephen, it's so much fun painting with oils! Thanks for addressing the health risks with solvents. Can you recommend what kind of ventilation we need for just working with the paints? I'm painting in a spare bedroom that has just one small window and don't want to cause health problems for myself or my family. Thanks!

I thought I saw a message about a Sargent Critique. I have been working on mine but not sure when we have to turn in our paintings? Where do I find this info?

Dana Kelly

About 9x12.

I also agree to a critique at this juncture, it'll help a lot for the final!

Lynda Backman

Yep - let's do a group critique of this stage, otherwise I'll race ahead and ruin it :D

Aidan Roberts

Quick Question....what is the actual size of your canvas?

Debra Schulman

Thank you Stephen! I am looking forward to part 3! Till then will work on my copy too :)

Shuchi Miuley

Yes, I ran off straight away to do my Lady Agnew copy as soon as I saw your version. So inspiring. I'd love to show you and see what you think
