Here is a link to a model pack folder with some less complex Bargues. It is from the Drawing Essentials series: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1pwPFJ3snQEURZm6hKgRL6Bamdbt8Dx4K

Hey Stephen! I watched the Psyche videos and they're great! I'm just wondering as I'm completely amateur to drawing- you did say that Psyche tends to be the first assignment, but do you have any pre-Psyche recommendations to try first, like eyes and feet? It looks a bit daunting and out of my skill set, would love to get my toes wet before completely diving in. Thanks!

Andrew Guan

If you finish with a decent drawing then I say proceed :)

Stephen Bauman Artwork

HI stephen, once i finish the beginner bargue do i go directly to the intermediate or i do the beginner one more than once?

Gianluca Marra

#goals - Thanks Rennie!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Thank you Stephen for being a light house in this ocean of information. I look forward to video two of course after “ I block in in such away that I don’t have to change it afterwards” 😁

Rennie Cook

No worries, Dave. I always work vertical. Experimented recently with working more horizontal and it was not for me.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hello Stephen. When you're doing Bargue drawings, do you have your drawing board set horizontal, vertical, or on an angle? Also, I 've watched many Bargue tutorials and I have not seen any that explain the theory and concepts as well as you do. I finally understand what it is we are suppose to get out of doing these drawings. Thank you very much for your efforts and excellent teaching skills.

Dave Emerson

Will take a look in 10 mins.

Hello Stephen, Part 2 of this video doesn't seem to exist, When I click on this https://www.patreon.com/posts/atelier-tier-de-51751551 It redirects me to the main page of your Patreon. Hope you fix that, Cheers!

Ali Mohamed

The painter Cesar Santos on youtube and instagram does a lot of pieces where he sketches with graphite then puts a layer of clear gesso or a fixative to paint over top with oils. Might want to check him out if you havent already

Sleepy Vamp

Hi Meg, the livestream is currently TBD. Will make a post about it ASAP.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Myles, it is totally okay to run the race at your own pace. The content is designed to be accessible live or after the broadcast. The feedback will be a general group feedback, so it won't be focused on any one individual drawing.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen, I've been desperately wanting to work on this all week and even bought the Stonehenge paper, but life has gotten in the way and 9 hours isn't going to happen for me by the deadline. What would you suggest for somebody like me who wants to follow along with the atelier tier, but may be getting to these assignments weeks late? Just go through the program at our own pace and not worry about getting feedback? Thanks.

Myles Marlin

Hey, thanks for the lesson. This is totally pushing me. Normally I knock off a quick sketch and then on to greener pastures! Quick question. Might have been answered and I have missed it. When will the feedback live stream be? I am in NZ so I think I will need to schedule an alarm to be able to watch this.

Meg maguire

Typo- should have read “even application.”

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Artin, I found 2B to be sufficient, however experiences can vary. Of course, go softer if need dictates but make sure it is darkness that you need more rather than a more Ben application.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

I see that materials are 2h-2b pencil. I am having difficulty going dark enough with only a 2b. Am I doing something wrong or are we intentionally limited to these values for the purpose of this study?

Artin

Well done Stephen. So much learning in your video. I really appreciate your thoroughness. You are easy to listen to which helps especially with the frustrating moments of doing Bargues.

Victoria Karlin

Fantastic work! Thank you for this. My creative endeavors have taken a back seat unfortunately for the better part of Spring, this is just the kind of inspiration I needed.

N8cre8s ROgers

fixed it. Thanks!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi there, has the link broken on this video, it's no longer playing for me?

Sarah Hope

By the end of the day.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Is there a specific time on the 16th that we need to have it in? I.e. before the 16th, or do we have through the weekend or 2359 AoE?

Chris N

Very beautiful cast charcoal drawing! To get so much refinement with charcoal is incredible to me.

Kat Aquarelle

From what I hear it is a mixture. Either one can work. I think that a good print out is most likely superior.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Great stuff, Louise! That's exactly the idea, little by little pushing your boundaries in each project.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

I just want to say how much I'm enjoying the rigour of the process Stephen. I've worked on my block in and shadow shape so far, 4-5 hours effort across two evenings, and I really pushed myself to have some restraint, and not move forward until the drawing's proportions told me it was time. I am usually not like this, tending to speed through. I know the exact point where I was going to settle, and then I decided not to, and kept comparing measures and angles, and adjusting things -- it really pays off, and the result so far is fantastic. Looking forward to more hours of work, and submitting my finished work! I also LOVE working on Stonehenge. I have never used such a fine paper before and it makes such a difference.

Louise Notley (lulunot1)

That's almost exactly my setup. I try and keep the image right next to my paper so the perspective isn't too different between the two. I'm new to this kind of thing, so I'm still figuring everything out. Super excited, though.

George Thomas

Ok, with a bit of trial and error, I was able to get a print that looks pretty close to the image provided on screen. In photoshop, there's a setting: Image>Adjustments > Shadow/Highlights. I moved the slider for shadow up to 35. It pulled the details out enough that I think it'll be good enough to work with.

George Thomas

Did a printout on A4 (biggest format my printer can handle) and placed it next to an empty sheet on a flat board! Basically the way I once learned to do. Not even considered to work from screen?!?

Stefan

I was wondering about whether to work off the screen or to try printing the source image on my printer at home. What is everyone else doing?

Sarah Hope

I had planned to work off of a print of the source image rather than off of a computer monitor, but I'm struggling to get our printer to show the subtleties of the stuff in shadow (ear, etc.). It just takes everything down to black. Anyone have any success or advice on pulling this off? It's an HP color laser jet.

George Thomas

Cool question, Edward. It's really up to you, but I tend to start with the form only and add the shadow after I have satisfied the first stage's requirements.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

It's no necessary to complete the entire drawing section. If you were enrolled at an academy then it would be. The recommended medium is graphite but the projects can be completed in other mediums.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

This is a great vid! This may be a dumb question but I’m new to all of this. Do I need to complete the entire drawing course to paint. Can I copy what you are doing in pencil but with oil paint?

Reuben Rutland

Hi Stephen, With regards to blocking in, if we are drawing from life and there is a deep shadow on the surface around the object, would we still only block in the silhouette? Or include the shadow in the block-in? Thanks!

Hao Chang

Keep going if you are feeling it. No problem pushing yourself further.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Is it essential that we stop at the 9 hour mark? I’m so immersed in my struggles that I haven’t been keeping track.

Kate Simpson

Hi George- thanks for asking. I will make a post for that livestream ASAP. Just have to make my schedule for the month first.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. Great livestream and very excited about this new program. Sorry if I missed this posted somewhere. Do you have a scheduled date and time for the class feedback live stream yet? I'd like to schedule some time off at work to watch it live.

George Thomas

Thanks, Georgie!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

To be honest I have not heard of different hardnesses in paper stumps. The ones that I use are not very hard or soft so perhaps medium would best describe them.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

This inaugural class of the Atelier Tier was great! Thanks Stephen! :)

Georgie Matthews

HI, what type (hardness) of stomp are you using (not mentioned in the notes), hard, med, or soft ? Thanks, cheers

Tundra Swan

Thanks for that nugget.... only adding more value in shadow area, never taking away value for reflected light. :D

Kelley Hails

I can't join the livestream due to a force majora; there will be a recording posted later, right? Regardless, have a great workshop everyone!

Sam Peltola

I’m not sure I remember that paper- but if it’s what I think it is then it is okay.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

About 3 hours

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen, expected length of this video class? (want to block out time). Thanks.

M

Hi, Stephen. I am using hahnemühle nostalgie paper. Is that ok ? Thank you!!!

Junior Ferreira

For this exercise the reference will be the Bargue only. It is interesting to look as well at the cast but it will not factor into the drawing that we make.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

HI Stephen, I found this image of the plaster cast using al most same light: https://www.felicecalchi.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Psychec-BW-600x470.jpg . The plate has a different feel near the mouth and shadow shape looks different near the eye. Do you think we should go more with the plate, just the plate or also / more look at the cast ?

Maurice Schoenmakers

Doesn't matter really. The heavier one is always preferable but I think that the texture is the same.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

it doesnt give the weight on the pads but I would guess its the 90#

Kimberly Ferrell

what weight Stonehenge paper do you prefer. Does it matter? I see https://www.dickblick.com/products/legion-stonehenge-paper/ has 90# & 120# in single sheets, or I can order pads— I tend to like heavier paper, but because it feels more substantial when you're all done.

Kimberly Ferrell

Strathmore 400 sketching is good. Or Canson mi-teintes.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi! If I can't find Stonehenge Paper, what other option could I use?

Martha

If you prefer to work in sight size that is perfectly okay.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Just to be clear, for this assignment are we not supposed to copy the plate sight-size? Or is it only if we dont know how to do sight size that you would recommend comparative?

Eli

The closest source image to 1:1 proportions with the drawing would be easiest.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Really looking forward to this Stephen. Quick question: is it easier to go up in scale, or down in scale, when creating a comparative measured drawing, or does it matter? I have the Bargue book plate which has Psyche at 6.25 inches, a printed black/white PDF version at 14.25in, and your digital image which fully open on my monitor is about 7.5in. Which one would be easiest to work from to get a 9.5 inch finished drawing?

Louise Notley (lulunot1)

Never bristol. A paper with a little bit of texture is very useful.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hello, for Canson paper should it be bristol or is slightly textured okay?

Shary

Canson would be the best sub.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Where can us folks form EU get our hands on stonehenge? Would fabriano accademia or canson be ok?
