In this lesson I will explain my palette choice for this painting and talk you through every step as I take it.

I highly encourage you to work along with me. Here is what you will need:

I paint in clearly delineated layers and with a general idea of the limit of layers I am willing to use on a painting. For a study this is usually 3. If each layer is thoroughly repainted, there is not usually much need for boiling out and so any resistant quality of the previous layer to an application of oil is not relevant. Eventually, all paint sinks in and so necessitate a final varnish. However, in between layers, I would never use varnish.

When I did the lady Agnew portrait, I had a problem with erratic shininess (kind of dry area here and there). I know that using only oil and liquin defeat the law of fat on lean. I know that raw umber repels oil (Xavier de Langlais dixit) and I don't understand why many artist still use that color. How do you deal with theese issues? Do you rely only on a final varnish?
