Doug Lab: Frisbee of Danger

I recently busted out my VHS deck to watch these awesome horror movie shorts that my friends Gabe and Alex made. They were really fun and they brought me back to the early 90s when I was in college making movies on VHS. So since my deck was all plugged in, I dug through my basement bins and had a watch party.

One tape I put on was Space Station. It's the cable access show I made while living at my parent's house in Darien, IL. It aired on Downers Grove public access. Some dudes in Chicago found it and they aired it there too. It makes me cringe so hard that I vowed never to show anyone ever again, but enough time has passed that now it's a fun watch. In fact, it's got some cool moments. Also, I'm trying not to be insecure or give a shit anymore! Anyway, I plugged this video capture device into my computer to digitize it and I've been in tech diff hell. It's now midnight and I've been trying to figure this out for hours. It won't work. I'm going to have to buy a new damn capture thing and upload it later.

In the meantime, I found this horror movie I managed to digitize years ago. It's older than Space Station. One of the first videos I ever shot and edited. I used 2 VHS decks, you can tell I didn't know what I was doing because there's a big glitch between each cut. The music turned out pretty cool though, It's a slowed down middle eastern song. One of the tape decks had a shuttle wheel and I remember screwing around with it and getting creepy sounds. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the vid.

Doug your outfit is incredible

Absolutely love this. 🤣 So pure. This reminds me of little films my friends and I made back in the late 90s. I wish I could go back and watch them. Ahh the 90s. ❤️

Ashley Oh

Is it the Duduk?

Eric

I want to make this my wake up alarm. Thank you for sharing.

Eric

Whoa, this was an awesome share! so many of your motifs already started showing up. The ominous music...the helpless main character, slightly confused but readily accepting the abnormal that slowly, dreadingly, turns dark/dangerous. can't wait for more!

Djdouggpoundinthemix before we knew he was! But of course… he is Doug Lussenhop, everyone wants him in the mix.

Sara & Josh

Hahaha, now that’s ripe for some 30 second commercial about berries or socks.

I loved making videos with my friends like this before the Internet

Kyle

Nice! Was Lynch already an influence?

Caleb

It’s a baby Doug🥹

Sufi Magpie

Love that you shared this. ❤️

I sped it up and exported it. Sounds like a reed instrument, can you identify? https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/oskycrol5ceq3qjxpfzeh/fod_sped-up.mp3?rlkey=uckmm5f94sallhr1qob2rg4vv&dl=0

Steve Clark

Nice work, Doug! It's cool to see where you started!

Tuna Can

Fantastic. Was the soundtrack a recorder flute slowed down?

Eric

Decent! as an aside, is Power Pad coming online anywhere in the future? Cheers!

Christopher Laramee

It's time. Bring back those jorts

Melissa

Hornings—Nice to see your unique directing/editing style has been there from the beginning and only gotten better with time

Myles

that was awesome !

Neat to see early Doug. The little glitches I would have taken as atmosphere where this young optimist doesn't seem to catch any clues from the big guy. With the music it all goes together really well. Most of all I'm glad you kept with your craft. It must be a very fun job.

Mary Newman

This is great! Very suspenseful!!

Athena

That was a fun watch. Loved the fashion

Megan

Congrats Doug! It’s been around 20 years of watching and this is the first identifiable re-use of a piece of media I’ve ever noticed from you. The sound matches a Scott Clam edit.

Christopher Sparks

The “music” was the perfect touch for the creep short!
