How Do You Do?
Added 2024-12-01 16:07:22 +0000 UTCHey friends, how was your Thanksgiving?
I had a good one. Early dinner at Captain Carlin's place... I am always in charge of the turkey so the day before I pick up my turkey (always a pre-brined Kosher bird) along with extra Turkey wings and necks to make a stock for the gravy.
The night before, I made turkey stock using the wings and neck. I also took the turkey out of the bag and cleaned it up so it could sit uncovered in the fridge overnight to dry it out.
The next morning, I preheat the oven for a good hour or so while I stuff the bird full of apples, oranges, onions, and garlic. I rub the whole bird in softened butter and sprinkle some rosemary salt all over it. Then, into the oven it goes for a good four hours, or until my temperature probe hits 155F.
An hour or so before we leave, I make my gravy using a simple flour and butter roux which I cook for about 10 minutes, and then slowly add my turkey stock. I added too much stock and couldn't get the thickness I was after, so I made more roux and added it, but it still felt thin to me. I let it boil for a bit while adding a dollop of VEGEMITE! and a few swings of BRANDY along with a big sprinkle of rosemary salt. It still wasn't thick enough so I added some corn starch...
It never did get to the thickness I wanted and I will do some gravy training lessons before next year.
Everyone brought the good stuff, and we all filled out bellies. After the kids wanted to play Mafia, I kicked things off with a round as the Mayor. I'm a good Mafia Mayor. The kids went wild with accusations. It was pretty funny.
Speaking of games, the next night, I taught my kids Texas hold 'em poker and they got hooked and we played it last night as well. Millie and I also stayed up late on a jigsaw puzzle that I got temporarily obsessed with.
On Friday, we drove up to Mount Wilson, about 45 minutes up from where we live, and explored around it. It's a gorgeous and fascinating place!
Later in the day, the kids went to Chuck E. Cheese while I watched "Beatles '64" which was great and unexpectedly very emotional.
In the evening we watched David Gordon Green/Ben Stiller's "Nutcrackers" which I appear briefly in... Me, Marilyn my mom and the kids all really liked it! I thought it was funny enough but also had a great weirdness to it, that separated it from your typical Holiday slop. I'm befuddled by the bad reviews... the New York Times was confused about who the movie was for. Well, maybe we're biased, but MY kids AND my mom both liked it a lot... so that's a pretty vast age range.
I also watched how Live At Kevin's became a certified flop over here on Patreon. Virtually no one shelled out the few bucks to watch it on the shop... I won't lie: It's dispiriting and discouraging. I wish we had a model to make things like a studio, where we self-fund things and then sell them at a reasonable price to you, which was my hope for this... sometimes it works but for the moment it's not working out at all here. Maybe it needed a PR push?
I dunno, it seems to work for On Cinema...
Speaking of shelling out, TOUR IS LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AWAY! and here's a sneak peek of big news... remember how the West Coast Dates opening act was listed as TBA? well, we're going to announce the great Kyle Mooney will be joining us for those first 4 shows in SF, Portland, Vancouver, and Seattle! Excited to have him on the road! Tickets for everywhere are still very much on sale right here
I hope your long weekend was as reasonable as mine! See you Thursday.

Live at Kevin’s was the perfect thing to help me chill out Sunday afternoon after an eventful road trip with the fam. Always grateful for art that slides my way when I need it the most.

2024-12-03 15:18:35 +0000 UTCHmm. I had bought it to support but only skimmed it (so far). Not sure how to increase demand. Maybe if I also received a live feed when you were making it - might have added some time sensitivity and "insider access" to push more people. I also buy a few concerts on NUGS at times but that I do that to have a 4k or high end audio library of content to put on the background sometime. I feel I have a collection so feel better about "adding to it". Just thinking out loud to help.

2024-12-03 13:18:06 +0000 UTCIt was great! Live At Kevin's did overlap a bit with the holidays, and we all know how crazy it gets when it's that time of the year. You know, it's hectic but also probably the most wonderful time of the year, in a way. I broke bread n bird on Tday with the in-laws. Lots of checked-out, edible-savvy VT Bernie Boomers over 65 digesting their meal with me while it snowed outside. Nobody talked politics and I loved that. I talked about Ted Turner with a step-uncle (stuncle) who helped get TBS going with ol Ted! He had so many cool stories. I'm kind of obsessed with him (Ted Turner, not the step-uncle) after watching that documentary. Seems like a good fella, and he did some amazing things for the world. I didn't finish the series and I haven't heard anything about Ted recently, so I'm kinda dreading the ending, and I let my step-uncle know that, unprompted. That ended up being awkward because I was like, "I haven't finished the series so I don't know what happened with him." I've avoided all Ted Turner stuff online, and there isn't too much, so it's been a breeze. I really hope he's not dead, but most data points to that as a probability for the old-timers. Jane Fonda is such a babe, too! SCHWING! Good food, and my bday was on Thanksgiving which is always a real treat because the cake is (you guessed it) the regular crappy pumpkin pie from earlier. I'd kill to have a sip of that wing and neck stock, sounds like you hit a homer with the big meal! I saw you in Nutcrackers and you were great, a character actor but hoo mama let's take Stiller out and get you in bed with Mary. Ready to watch you play a lead (non animated). A24, HBO - something high brow. It was a good movie, definitely felt some warmth, and I got in some Ben Stiller Show episodes on after for the fam. "Manson" killed! (Ha!) -Stuffed in Vermont P.S. I didn't know about Live At Kevin's until I read the post, but (Ferris Beuler voice) "they bought it". As in, I bought it just now <3 P.P.S. Why was Chuck-E-Cheese so emotional for the the kids? Scared by the famous rat mascot? Sounds like you dodged a bullet by staying home and watching the Fab Four flick. JK, I know what you meant. Sorry for the novel, NOT!

2024-12-03 05:11:39 +0000 UTCT, we have a great community here but we have to get the word out. I don't know who runs your social media crap but there are dozens of potentially "viral" clips of the show. You need to penetrate the brain rotted phone addicts. Peace and love.

2024-12-03 03:42:49 +0000 UTCYes these seem to be a relic of the past. Not they they can’t be good and well made still, but with the dynamics of media/internet of the last 20 years the genre perhaps loses the spark or appeal it once carried in the more limited media periphery of its peak.

2024-12-02 06:59:03 +0000 UTCFor what it is worth I have watched almost everything you have put out for the last 20 years and am a subscriber to the OHL patreon and on cinema (the only 'fun' purchases in my budget all year) for the last several years. I appeciate the work and excitement that went into making it and I am sure it is great and will find its audience after the holidays. Always a bummer to get a lackluster response to something creative that takes effort. But I have been barely surviving financially for several years now. I know 5 dollars does not seem like a lot to most people, and it is a fair price, but 5 dollars could easily overdraw my account and spiral into serious consequences for me and the people who depend on me. It sucks having to pass on merch & any extras you guys put out but that is the reality. Was able to scrounge up the money to see you on that first run Two Tims tour (the only post pandemic show I have been to) but things have been on a steady financial fall since then. Hope that gives some context.

2024-12-02 01:54:45 +0000 UTCI have been super busy with the holiday this week and the kids being out of school. I did get around to buying Live at Kevin's, but maybe it will be a slow burn since the holidays. Did watch Nutcrakers with my youngest and we both enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommend.

2024-12-02 01:41:08 +0000 UTCThank you for making Live at Kevin's affordable. Ben Berman is awesome and he captured you guys in a really fun way, it was a great watch!

2024-12-02 01:16:11 +0000 UTCI didn't feel scolded. Tim is usually transparent about his feelings on the business end of things which I think is honestly helpful for other artists that want insight into making art for a living. Personally I didn't purchase the Kevin's thing. I'm sure I'd enjoy watching it but I didn't buy it because I already saw Tim live, which I assume many patrons that didn't buy it probably had the same rationale.

2024-12-01 22:55:01 +0000 UTCNot getting the gravy thickness right sounds a lot like that episode of Tim’s Kitchen Tips 😂

2024-12-01 22:28:20 +0000 UTCFinishing up my holiday weekend travels and just bought Live At Kevin’s. Can’t wait to watch it and get cozy with some leftovers. Your turkey method sounds A+. If you want a gravy recipe that’s tedious but worth it, try Tom Colicchio’s herb butter turkey and gravy recipe. I’ve used it for a few thanksgivings and it is super reliable. Anyway, happy December, T!

2024-12-01 22:16:24 +0000 UTCSorry you're feeling disheartened about the reception to the film, Tim. I just had a chance to watch and listen and focus, and I loved it. The band sounds fantastic and I love the look of it, like a 16mm doc from the '70s, which perfectly suits your music. I think people will find their way to it in time. Please don't stop thinking of interesting ways to grow and present yourself as an artist.

2024-12-01 22:06:50 +0000 UTCLove you Tim, I bought “Live At Kevin’s” and I will say it is worth every dollar, you get the band in this intimate, “inside-look” setting, songs that I have not seen live yet performed and great editing, made me laugh at parts. Also my wife and I watched the Stiller flick, and it was a great heart-warming movie, both enjoyed it, hope you got those bubbles off you. Stiller>Seinfeld

2024-12-01 21:13:09 +0000 UTCAggressive maybe is a harsh term but I did feel a little guilty when I read that part - tho I can understand tim’s being bummed as well. I just can’t justify the expense of this type of stuff whenever it comes up, completing the cycle of bummers.

2024-12-01 20:39:38 +0000 UTCAgreed with the other comments here - it's been a week of money going elsewhere. I'm keen for Kevin's. Maybe we gotta take a leaf from The Curse and have some kind of interpersonal tension/conflict in the trailer. "It's a frictionless show" says Dougie of Fliplanthropy. I don't know why, but humans can't resist drama. And we get plenty of that with OC! 💖

2024-12-01 19:59:25 +0000 UTCMy two cents is I think a concert doc can be kind of a tough sell, regardless of how good it is. theyre like musicals in the sense that the audience is already a niche more so than a comedy (or podcast) format is, and you’re carving that niche out from a relatively small group of us here. it looks good though, and i’be got it on the list!

2024-12-01 17:27:40 +0000 UTCAdmittedly, I haven’t gotten to picking up Live at Kevin’s yet because it’s been a tough holiday week. It’s not been a priority. But I have been recently thinking that I’d pay you a good chunk of money for a recording of any of the No More Bullshit performances you did on either of the Two Tims tours. Especially with you saying that character may be retired. Were any of those recorded?

2024-12-01 16:53:26 +0000 UTCYou sharing your Tim Turkey ways feels like the congenially casual chit chat I’m missing in my life, like from a big brother or young uncle. The compatibility between your families always sounds fun. I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time for my best friend’s family, basically my 2nd family. It was a lot of work but it went well. Sorry to hear about the live numbers. Not sure if it’s an indie artist thing? Well, I’m just one data point but maybe my account might be helpful (I’m framing this situation a lot more nicely on paper for you, obviously): Last year, I joined the community and your personal Discord on a whim after catching one of your Stories about an online meeting. No idea what you were like. (Maybe watched one OHL ep? or clips.) I somehow felt a connection to the glimpse of you on a walk and my curiosity was piqued. Clearly, I liked what I saw/heard and have stuck around, wanting more peeks for some reason. For me personally, I connect with the human Artist; it’s a side not many artists show, even with the steady stream of social media. And I feel like Live at Kevin’s shows that sincerity, especially since your music genre isn’t one I listen to. Anyway, I know you put your energy out in a lot of areas. Not saying what worked last year will work this year, but I do think promotions will help somewhat. (I’m still severely behind with On Cinema but I like the online presence, they’re kind of like my reminders…). I appreciate you and your honesty!

2024-12-01 16:47:53 +0000 UTCI did a roller blading 10k at Santa Monica with the LA Skate Hunnies for Skatesgiving, which was beautiful. We gave donations to a food bank as part of it. Friday I biked their Culver City and saw an intersection taped off and police there. There was a motorcycle laying in the intersection and a car in the corner. They had crashed, and the motorcyclist died. Very disturbing, and a symptom of our shameless, car oriented infrastructure, to the exclusion of transit, the environment, and our lives. My mom's doing very well, and other than that, I've been writing a lot. No Thanksgiving bird for me, just my regular meals.
