Waxa Tour Diary - C-Ville Days
Added 2024-09-05 12:54:06 +0000 UTCGood morning! I hope you all enjoy the best of today. It was a hell of a year so far and I can't wait to look back, myself! Summer's over. wow. Now what?
Pushing out of Charlottesville, VA today after a good 2 and a half days here. A lovely town! We're in the mountains and so the air has been cool and the temps have been reasonable.
C-Ville has a cute little 6 block pedestrian mall zone that's lined with restaurants and bars and shops and we've mostly been cruising that area, but we took a great nature walk on our day off down to Riverview Park, which almost led to a tubing opportunity which we would have jumped on in a heartbeat but alas they didn't operate during the week after labor day.
We had great French food for dinner at Petite Pois on the strip Tuesday night - on the Yelp review, someone was raving about their waiter Brandon and I sent a screenshot to the group saying "I hope we get Brandon!"
We were seated and our waiter came by and said "hi, my name is Brandon, I'll be your server tonight!" and we all cheered! Brandon was great, a very open and out gay man who regaled us with stories about his move from southern california through Portland OR, to the blue ridge countryside of Western VA. He had some funny stories and we couldn't get enough of him.
The show last night was at an outdoor amphitheater located at the far end of the pedestrian mall and we played to a half empty room as people were still filtering in for the main act... maybe the thinnest crowd so far but those there were very kind and seemed to enjoy it. We were really tight and locked in, and it sounded great on stage, so I was happy. I figured this would be a low stakes stop on the road and I kinda hung back a little and just focused on the songs and singing and playing more than any big stage antics. I feel like I could play this set twice a night every night if I had to... it's so fun.
After the set, me Matt and Connor walked down Miller's a bar/restaurant where a jazz trio was set up in the corner. We had some pretty good burgers and enjoyed the jazz, while an older boomer couple next to us argued... I tried to eavesdrop as much as possible and piece together the crux of the argument. It was pretty tense.
We walked back to the ampitheater and checked out Waxa from the back. they sounded great as always, but I was feeling beat and walked back to the hotel. you know that feeling... hmmm. I could... leave and call it a night? I needed it. Went back to my room and konked out on some Seinfeld.
3 more show! Looking forward to Hopscotch today. I feel we'll have more Timheads down there.
AND PHILLY IS COMING ON SATURDAY!
more soon. p&l T

Sad to miss y’all at Hopscotch - hope it went well! Been a few times in the pre-covid past and playing the fest this year with my old band but we’re not coming down til Friday… pretty great and well-run / well-curated!

2024-09-05 18:14:32 +0000 UTCCan’t wait to see you guys! Great pizza spot called OakCity Pizza away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown festival. There’s a great bar called Person Street Bar that’s a cool hangout not far from the pizza spot. Umstead Park is beautiful this time of year to hike around and enjoy the first of fall. Cheers! P&L

2024-09-05 15:24:06 +0000 UTCHopscotch is a great festival! I went last year and there’s bar acts playing all day throughout the city, then the main acts on the evenings Such a cool experience I hope T and the VGB get to pop in to some the shows during the day. My friends and I saw a punk band that did a Rage Against the Machine cover that blew us all away — and it was like 2 PM 😁 I couldn’t swing hopscotch this year, but was so glad I got to catch the band the night before in C-Ville I hope Tim gets to drink some beers with Robert Pollard in Raleigh 🍻

2024-09-05 14:53:44 +0000 UTCcapacity-wise, the 750 cap Jefferson is probably the THATVGB headline play in a tertiary market like Cville

Kinda like your Richmond show but smaller. Thanks for coming. Maybe ill call into ohl instead of just listening to it. Safe travels!
