Waxa Tour Diary Day 1
Added 2024-08-27 13:39:55 +0000 UTCHey folks! 2 weeks on the road starts right about now, so I decided to continue my tradition of keeping a diary along the way. This is a bit of a different tour, where I'm mostly operating as SUPPORT for Waxahatchee, with a few festival dates thrown in.
But tonight we kick things off with a free show in Central Park, co-headlining with Snail Mail. (We go on right at 7PM)
I got into NYC LATE Sunday night (well, early Monday morning) after our flight was delayed due to a late pilot. I watched Civil War (not very good, I'm sorry to tell you) and a CNN Documentary series on The Last Flight of the Columbia Shuttle. That was very good and moving.
Checked into a hotel just south of Times Square in the garment district, I suppose. Here's my view:
Yesterday, me and Connor rehearsed with our substitute drummer Matt Carroll, who played with us for TimFest. Ellie is meeting us tomorrow, as she's pulling double duty with Waxa and was in Pittsburgh last night.
I had a terrible sleep the night before and had to cancel a little press thing that was scheduled for the morning. I do know now that I need a full day of recovery when heading east these days. Feeling better today.
This tour will be a test for me. I'm expecting a fair amount of fans out there, but I also know there will be a good mix of indifference - the undecided or perhaps some who do not like me at all. I'm not going to win everyone over but I'm hoping to convert more than a few. It will feel different than past tours with the band, where I had the feeling of full control over the crowd - I have to be myself but perhaps contain some instincts to be hard on the crowd if they're not giving back. Just sing my songs well, play my guitar competently, trust in the band and the music. have fun.
I also won't have the comfort of my big beautiful bus - we'll be taking a sprinter van and staying in hotels. But I've done it before and it will all be fine. It's a great time of year to be on the east coast and we're playing at some really nice venues. I'm going to try my best to have a good time.
Until tomorrow. T

2024-08-27 16:49:10 +0000 UTCThat view tracks, of course. I’m both disappointed (for myself) and stoked (for y’all) that both the Deerfield and Portland Maine shows are sold out. I’ll be within a half-hour’s drive of Portland this weekend. Enjoy the gigs! ❤️

2024-08-27 16:14:53 +0000 UTCSorry to hear about your distaste for Civil War. I get it though, not everyone loves Garland's style.

2024-08-27 15:57:51 +0000 UTCLots of good restaurants in downtown Raleigh: Brewery Bhavana (craft beer, dim sum…), Bida Manda (Laotian), Rye Bar & Southern Kitchen, Poole’s Diner, Whiskey Kitchen, Sam Jones BBQ, Beasley’s Chicken & Honey, etc., but our experiences at Hopscotch have been long lines/wait times to get into restaurants. You might be better off making a reservation away from downtown at an awesome place called Ajja in Five Points. It’s a 5-minute drive from DTR. Music celebrities often eat here when in town. https://www.ajjaeats.com/

2024-08-27 15:54:59 +0000 UTCI remember visiting Arrowood Farms during peak pandemic and thinking how nice the outdoor stage looked against all the natural beauty of that area. Can't wait to see two of my favorite artists perform there this weekend! Weather looking nice too 👀

2024-08-27 14:16:28 +0000 UTCI gasped at the mini-tour diary notification. Thanks for sharing. I hope my perspective can reinforce your reframing and help in some way. So around this time last year, I went to your show not knowing what to expect comically, and not even really a listener to your genre musically. Comedy aside, the music part rocked! And mostly because of the energy, imo. Yeah, I get how you may have been revved up from the stand up part...but I feel like if you can summon an ounce of your charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, you'll make it. That smile goes a long way in my book. Now hit them with your best shot!

2024-08-27 13:47:41 +0000 UTCSnail Mail is awesome! You'll do great, Tim. Just focus on winning over one new fan per show. (I have no experience with audiences and am in no way musically talented.)
