Trump Flops

I watched far too much of the RNC this week. I don't know why, It was a slow week, and around prime time, i'd just get drawn in to see the spectacle - There were plenty of boring speeches along with some true loons, but the prevailing thought I had was, "shit, they have their shit together." there was a positive and joyful atmosphere. No one made complete fools of themselves, there were not too many major technical malfunctions but most importantly, The Party felt fully united under Trump. Yes, in a sick, sycophantic "dear leader" kind of way, but it was impressive from a pure political strategy perspective to see how all these former Trump critics were up on the stage raving about him. There was a notable amount of racial diversity through the week, and the segment with the Gold Star Families who lost their children in the Afghanistan debacle (Even though it you look under the hood of that one, it was Trump who set the pieces in motion for that to unravel) was truly moving and an effective indictment of Biden.

Naturally, I'm not too stupid to know that the content of most of the speeches was abhorrent. Even when the party seemed to cast away 40 years of Republican Orthodoxy, with Teamster's President and JD Vance talking like Huey Long, I know well enough they are just cynically spewing shit to get the "workin man" middle class, midwest, rust belters voting for their side. I don't take any of it seriously. But at the very least, the Party's message had a vision (albeit a dark one) and of course any student of politics knows that's a key piece for victory.

There was talk through the week of Trump being a changed man, and plenty of testimony from employees and family members describing Trump as a good man, a great dad and grandpa... baloney of course, but I could see how effective it could be.

Contrasting with the total collapse happening on the Democratic side, it felt like the Republicans were in the catbird seat.

Then Thursday night happened.

I ended up skipping prime time, to watch The Natural with the family. i thought the kids might like it, but a lot of it went over their heads. (Much like Roy Hobb's homers) I maintain it's a classic.

I went up to see the reactions and watch the highlights to the final night and couldn't believe it. Dumb ole Trump had fumbled the ball on the 5 yard line.

After a trifecta of comically shitty men, confirmed racist Hulk Hogan, lip smackin'/wife smackin' Dana White and Kid ( i don't need any additional descriptors other than "Kid Rock") Rock, Trump came out in front of tacky Broadway style marquee lights like he was the lead in A Chorus Line. The first chunk was a stiff telling of his attempted assassination, full of plain lies and exaggerations but delivered with such lack of enthusiasm and emotion, it was like he was reading about it on the teleprompter for the first time. A Jack Decker style cold read about his brush with death that made you doubt what you all saw with your own eyes happened at all. The assassination bit also featured a sick, theatrical prop of the slain firefighter's uniform wheeled out as a prop for Trump to hug and kiss. Deranged by any measure.

Trump sprinkled in a little focus tested bit of "unity" but quickly bored of it and drifted into his long and winding, unhinged incoherent and sweaty standard issue, middle of the week stump speech with all his shitty "greatest hits" bad stand up (Hannibal Lecter et al)

It went on and on, leading some delegates to tune out - cheeseheads checking their phones and yawning as the clock struck midnight.

Instead of sitting in the main hall every night, basking in the praise of the speakers, like the pope, head hunched over, looking like a turtle, and occasionally nodding off, he could have maybe used that time to READ his speech a few times? He could have huddled with his advisers and game planned and committed to keeping his time on stage focused and presidential. But he's too lazy and self consumed and set in his ways for any of that. He'd wing it and shoot from the hip.

Of course none of will change the minds of anyone in the hall that night and the millions out there watching who are all in on the guy, but I can't imagine it sat well with the strange and mysterious "undecided voter." They must have watched and thought, "oh no. It's THAT guy. I remember him. He's just too... weird."

THAT guy we can beat. I had mixed emotions because I worried the speech was SO bad that it may inject a sense of hope in the Biden Campaign to soldier on and reject calls to drop out. With Biden cooped up with Covid and more high level party members coming out publicly to ask him to step down, I don't think there's any way to stop that momentum now.

And so I think if the party can work through this very painful and messy transition from Biden to ANYone else in the coming weeks, we have a shot to offer a marked contrast to the sweaty, deranged cult leader and maybe stave off the march towards a Theocratic, Crypto Fascist HellAmerica in November. Maybe?

Peace and Love and a sprinkle of hope, T

Thanks for the link :) I tend to avoid live audience version of podcasts so I'm clearly missing some gems by having strange bias 😂

ToddUmptious

awesome! would love to see him on again sometime.

Jonathan Olson

...And the Dems flopped harder...

John Paul Monge

I couldnt even watch the full last night of the RNC. I couldn’t stand seeing the people cry and him retelling the attempted assassination. Then when he kissed the firefighters suit and said he gave the family 100k and waved the check. I lost it! His cult is too far gone. He really says a whole lot of nothing and they eat it up.

He was born to run

A lot of Israeli haters seem to be very pro-Russia for some reason 🤔

Emergency Seance!

The Boss for Boss

T$

OPEN CONVENTION! Let's hear em all out!

Tim Heidecker

Who's your pick now Tim

Grant Peterson

I heard the news today, oh boy.

Tron Brown

Here we go

Maslow

Nice analysis, couldn’t watch it myself otherwise I would eat my own face by accident

Cf Duddy

Cornel West seems pretty OK with genocide in Ukraine.

Austin Charron

they might unironically use this and it would work.

Tron Brown

Mm. I dunno dude. Seems too logical and reasonable a point. stfu.

Brian Rooney

Well articulated and to me, spot on.

Bradford Beidler

Don’t vote for anyone who isn’t explicitly against genocide. I’ll be voting for Cornel West and you should have him on the show

T$

because the fireman died so donald could live.

Jenny Schmidt

Why did he smooch the slain fireman mannequin. Although i do think his family including grandkids genuinely like him from what i saw.

Brandon Fasse

He was on an in person holiday show to translate for Vic's hacker in Turkey. He was a real sport it was very funny. -matt https://youtu.be/96GugkIIWjE?si=nAQQeCZHgEYPAZW1&t=4161

Tim Heidecker

Hope y’all watched RNC with Emma and Sam from Majority Report. Can’t imagine raw doggin that shit!

Ryan Zimmerman

The Republican Party is good at appearing to be united. They’re not really. I believe trump is going to win unfortunately, but if I’m wrong and he loses, the republicans who swapped their insults for praise to stand in front of a crowd at the rnc will drop him like he’s hot. Again.

Natalie

What do you think about this whole open convention/mini primary idea? I've heard it as a way to "avoid a coronation of Kamala". Not sure how anyone else feels, but I personally would not care. Taking a senile guy out of the race is big enough of a plus for me.

Brandon Holmes

She has a pretty strong progressive label to her. Going to take a while for that to go away for her to have a fathomable shot at president.

Brandon Holmes

Is your contention that progressives are trading their support of Biden in return for his support of their agenda items in the event of a 2nd term? Genuine question.

William Riley

Only the Savoy Special can save us.

Jim D.

i like that kamala has subtly but meaningfully outflanked joe on palestine. i'm not convinced she'd be *able* to get a ceasefire done, but at least she's not the one actively enabling a genocide. having her "red line" breached over and over and over with zero consequences for israel.

Jonathan Olson

i love hasan and i love ohl. it would be great. but his schedule is insane. he's only been on chapo once and he's *friends* of theirs. and given the way chat reacted to chapo a few years ago - lmao.

Jonathan Olson

her stream was absolute nonsense. especially the ballot / donation concerns. i completely understand why she's doing what she's doing, but i couldn't disagree with her more. the number of unlikely things that have to go right for her and the progressive caucus to get what they want out of backing joe right now - well, it's a long list. look, i don't want to be agreeing with the pelosi-schumer wing of the democratic party, but here we are.

Jonathan Olson

Crypto Fascist--I would say "Christo-fascist"? I'm still dreaming of the day he shits onstage like you proposed, Tim. It really would convert a few hundred voters (I was howling when you proposed that!).

Steve Clark

Also just to comment again because I can’t shut up. I am of the opinion that both parties are 2 sides of the same coin, this is an empire built on greed and blood and no election will change or fix that. However one side of this coin is so much worse than the other. There are many policy positions that we need the dems for in order to pass or stop the repubs from passing. While the Democratic Party won’t “save us” we do have a better chance of not being totally F’ed in the A with them in office I believe. Being from a Red state it seems obvious to me that the Republicans side of the coin is the one that would gladly kill us all in the name of corporate profit. Which is why I always vote for the dems even if I don’t consider myself one of them.

My Boot

Well said Tim.

Erik Buckham

Classic tell of a Monday morning quarterback. The app is on my phone and my phone is 3D.

Maslow

Have the kids seen Field of Dreams? I used to watch that with my dad all the time as a kid.

Melissa

Strands is played on a 2D plane (height x width), just like word search. Neither have depth. As someone who works professionally in a depth-related field I can tell you with certainty if you were in a room with me and my colleagues it wouldn't be for long as the laughter would literally force you out of the room. All the best, dear

Dan Quest

Not a Democrat, but this take was spot on, Tim. Well said. Cheers to the downfall of the sweaty cult leader.

Luke

Strands has more depth than a word search. People who do this for a living would laugh you out of the room for that take.

Maslow

Hot take: Strands is just a glorified word search. Insert “prove me wrong guy” meme here.

Drew Schooley

As we approach a potential new nominee, and the 6 months of legal losses we'll likely see, I'm thinking about how Chapo Matt said in 2020 it would be funny if Trump won, and how Will Chapo was concurrently arguing that Federal judge appointments dont matter.

CB

Her IG stream had nothing to do with supporting the status quo and more with describing the lack of actionable plans to replace Biden at this late stage and the inevitable legal challenges that will result in new candidate not being on the ballot on swing states and potential, eventual SC decision

CB

I feel like Strands has gotten way too easy after leaving beta mode. Or maybe my brain is growing.

Josh Rachbach

i like strands

Tim Heidecker

the dems can't save us unfortunately

WL

🥥🥥🥥🥥🥥🥥 we need Kamala to be our Momala now. Really the Dems really should have had all this figured out 6 or 7 months ago, no matter what they do it’s a gamble of course but it seems to me that Kamala is the best bet now. She’s the VP already and if the president can’t continue it’s the VPs job to step in, so that would be the cleanest transition. Plus imagine how funny it would be to watch all the Trumpers freak out if they loose to Kamala Harris. Get up in this coconut tree everyone.

My Boot

The Natural is a classic 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 ⚾

Dan Mulcahy

Thank you, Anthony Weiner

Matt B.

I like Strands, am I allowed to have an opinion?

Maslow

A friend told me the other day that she was talking to a friend who asked his cousin why he liked trump. He responded by saying, I like him because "we hate the same people." I was not shocked at the reason, but shocked that a person would just come out and say this. One thing I see with these republicans, ones I know personally, and ones I see in the media, is they seem to talk about love and show a lot of hate. It's very scary. Every time I hear one of those super loud motor deals people are sporting more and more, I feel like I can hear the hate thundering down the road.

Mary Newman

I'm a fan of the NYT Mini Crosswords myself.

jen.

I'm disliking Lester Holt more and more everyday. I watched some of their broadcast of Trump's RNC speech night. I thought it very strange that they made an edit (live I guess) to have a slow motion effect on certain moments, example: Trump walking out to the mic. How or why would this network want this guy to win! Maybe they see it as a forgone conclusion and they don't want to be on their bad side.

Mary Newman

while no fan of the Mainstream press, I don't recall the last time Trump sat down with any of those people. He's icing them out, so it's hard to know what they'd ask him. On CNN, Daniel Dale is a fairly regular presence doing his best to point out all of the lies Trump tells. But the other side plays by other rules and I think scrutiny of Biden's health and fitness are fair concerns and he's bungled every opportunity to squash those concerns. Agree that Trump should be held to those same standards, but if he doesn't show up, it's hard to press him on that.✌️

Tim Heidecker

none of the people calling for joe brandon to step aside have any plans aside from open convention. that would be chaos. joe has said time and time again that he is staying in. they need to get over it and do everything they can to make him win. unless george clooney has a better idea

Jenny Schmidt

weird stuff! Obviously I was being hyperbolic with "Anyone Else" and I am actually undecided and unsure who i'd support out of a fairly small, competent field of obvious contenders. That subject will likely be the topic of my next blog should things move in that direction this week. Not sure what you mean by a monday morning QB, am odd term for someone who was calling for an open convention last year, never supported Biden in the 2020 Primaries... and begrudgingly voted for him as Trump was an obvious non-option. I don't believe I live in any kind of bubble - true, I'm in Entertainment as a living, and I'm paid well when I'm working, which is far from any kind of guarantee. I'm essentially self employed and my employment is based on the whims of other people when I'm acting and my own work ethic and self generated ideas when it's my own projects, along with either the support of my fans or network daring enough to take a risk on us. I do have the NY Times app, but I mostly use it for the Connections and Spelling Bee games. All the best!

Tim Heidecker

Hmm, kind of jerky but also kind of smart post. It's off though. No one is claiming to be a "professional". And we all know that Tim is waiting before he endorses the Harris Wareheim ticket. So maybe chill out.

Jeff Franchetti

Very well put, Tim. Bydaway, these Saturday blogs are fantastic and such a nice perk to the patreon!

Pee Pat

How many times do you think trump shit himself during his speech? I’m going with #2

brainblob

The fact that you say "Anyone Else" when talking about Biden's replacement is a classic tell that you're a Monday Morning quarterback. People who do this for a living would get laughed out of a room for being that vague, but in your bubble you have the confidence to believe you've got a real handle on this situation, because you have the NYT app on your phone.

James Morris

This is your last chance. After this there is no turning back. You take the coconut pill and I show you how deep the context goes.

Pepito

The me from 2019 would never believe that the me from 2024 would be desperately clamoring for the opportunity to vote for Kamala Harris. Things sure are wacky these days!

Painthuffer2

Pretty sure Hasan has been on OH before, I think during a live show and maybe once after that.

Maxine Thomas

A bunch of my friends watch Hasan and I think I could trick them into being offic hours fans if you can get him on to talk about recent events '^_^

ToddUmptious

Turns out, Tim Heidecker is a very good writer. Great job Tim! I really enjoyed reading this, and I hope you’re correct in your assessment of the reactions from the (somehow) undecided voters and the Biden campaign.

Thomas Schermerhorn

Harris/ RFK. Harris/ Buttigieg. Harris/ Coconut. 🌴 🥥. Harris. Yesterday. Now. Make the DNC all about how we are going to be fine. Lol wasn't that silly. Ol' Joe. Harris v. Trump in September. Spell out the Nationalist Republican agenda. Abortion ban. Climate denialism. Billionaire donors. Come onnnnn.

Brian Rooney

I don't care about sports. I don't listen to Taylor Swift. I don't have any of the streaming services. Politics is easy to ignore if you have a family, other hobbies, are middle-aged and never really cared in high school, etc.

Brian Rooney

I was thinking a lot about the Lester Holt clip you guys played where he asked Biden about the "bullseye" comment, and it's really striking how disingenuous the media is in their treatment of the two. The lamestream media's support for Trump will be a big obstacle for voters to overcome. Sad

Holdendrils

AOC's got nothing to lose and everything to gain by supporting the status quo. She'll be President someday. If that's still a thing in 2028.

Brian Rooney

Did you watch any of AOC’s Instagram live. I was firmly in the Biden has to go camp, but it got me spooked. She maintained there’s no unity on who would replace Biden with much of the donor class wanting to replace the whole Biden ticket. She maintained that anyone else with presidential ambitions isn’t hellbent on getting shoehorned in at the last minute. She was just generally pouring cold water on the open convention idea—not as cut and dried as pundits make it out to be. She feared a very messy process that could see Dems blowing the deadline. I don’t know. I still feel like it’s just a death march if it’s Biden and that alone should be impetus to try anything else, but it did make me see why someone with inside knowledge might think we can only try to salvage the mess Biden has put us in.

William Riley

The hardest part of all this for me are the millions and millions of people who have no interest in or grip on history. They can't see the writing on the wall because they've long since left the building.

Buz Lee

Curious if you saw AOC's remarks and how perilous she thinks an open convention would be?

Russ Hull

Need an emergency seance to bring George Bush senior back from the dead for his presidential noguration.

asidbrain

Great read, Tim. Thanks for your thoughts! Sending peace and love from Liverpool.
