VB Gonna Be A DJ: Prince & Pals: Do You Think I’m A Nasty Girl? (1980-87)

I just learned that Prince was named after his jazz musician father’s stage name “Prince Rogers.” Prince Rogers Nelson is on his birth certificate. That’s like Declan MacManus naming his son Elvis Costello MacManus. Or if the drummer of the Beatles named his son Ringo Starr Starkey. Elton John Dwight. The Edge Evans. Chubby Checker Evans. Anyway. You get the idea.

I kept finding myself going back to certain Prince tracks. Lately it’s been a few songs off Sign Of The Times (under alter ego Camille) or his original demos for some of the hits recorded by other artists part of Prince’s camp.

Prince was a creative force. He couldn’t help but put his fingerprint on anything he worked on. That confident yet weird sexual energy he excreted through his tight purple onesie hypnotized the ladies of the eighties. He hit a groove where he couldn’t use everything he was writing that he’d just give hits to other artists or, in the case of The Time, he’d write and record every instrument of every track and hand it over to Morris Day so he could sing overtop Prince’s vocals. His girlfriends would be given a hit song as a gesture of Prince’s appreciation. I’m sure he was a controlling person to work with and date. You just had to kiss the ring of the Prince or off with your head! You become what you know. His dad controlled his son’s emotions, always reminding him that his father was far better musician than his son could ever dream to be. What an insecure a-hole!

This mix has an hour of my current Prince-related faves. Hope you enjoy it. Let me know your favorite Prince track or album in the comments.

Peace and peace,

Vic

"I think he is brilliant. He is one of the most talented people in the industry." - Bill Joel on Prince.

Nice tracks VB. “Sometimes ideas are coming so fast that I have to stop doing one song to get another. But I don’t forget the first one. If it works, it will always be there. It’s like the truth: it will find you and lift you up. And if it ain’t right, it will dissolve like sand on the beach.” - Prince.

Jim D.

Yes Vic I do in fact think your a nasty girl (also great mix btw)

Justin Mallon

Oooh I love this mix!!! Always love a Vic Mix. Fave prince cut would be the I would die 4 U extended version that goes on for about ten minutes and is an absolute JAM.

Ed Enayat

Thank you for posting this fun mix 😊

Dana Rathbun

As a casual fan of Prince it was fun to dive in a little deeper. Thank ya Vic!

Speaking of controlling, Sinead O'Connor has a bizarre story in her autobiography of him trapping her in his house when she was very young. She had to escape and run away. She seemed to have lost respect for him over that.

Mary Newman

Thanks for posting the IDs VB!

dudethatbe

Dan

If you’re reading this, my recommendation is to watch Mike Judge’s Tales From The Tourbus season two. Whole season is bout funk. And that means PRN

That bass drum and synth on Dirty Mind cooks. It’s hard not to listen to the whole album after that one!

Even better Uncle Phil - when Prince gave Mazarati the demo, it was just him and acoustic guitar and basically sounded like a blues track. Brown Mark and Mazarati came up with 100% of the production - including that hi-hat gated through the guitar - and the backing vocals. That’s when Prince took it back! One of his signature songs and he had very little to do with the finished result. Still a jam!

Andrew

Love it! Great choices. Blue Limousine is a banger of a deep cut. It’s a shame most of the protege stuff isn’t streaming!

Andrew

PS though Prince birthday was June 7th!

Phil Braun

That’s a great list. Prince was so prolific - he never stopped writing. There’s a popular story going around about how Prince gave “Kiss” to the band Mazarati, then heard them play it and changed his mind saying “I need that back”. Hard for me to list favorites - I’ll say Bambi, Computer Blue, DMSR, & I could never take the place of your man, for now

Thought this title was referencing Tinashe for a second

Have yet to properly explore Princes catalogue but I can't say I know of any I hate. Been exploring some MonoNeon lately who I believe was the last bassist Prince hired before he passed, def worth a gander.

ToddUmptious

Purple Rain is obviously perfect, but the albums I come back to the most are Sign O The Times and 1999

David B.

if you like prince you gotta check out moodymann
