It's Movie Time!

Good morning! Its great to be back! That was a fun show, albeit a little chaotic and jam packed even though it was 3 hours it felt like we never stopped humming!

Working my way back into home life and have a bit of what I call the post tour blues - happy to be home but at the same time missing the routine and productivity of working every day.

Took the kids to Inside Out 2 yesterday. My God. If you need a good cry... I was welling up pretty much from the opening piano notes. It's such a beautiful movie - so damn smart and insightful while also being fun and funny where it needs to be. The second welling hit me when they introduced the idea of how Riley's (the girl who's brain we're in) sense of self is built from her experiences and choices she makes. It's such a genius way of thinking and exploring how we come to be who we are and who we think we are. As RIley hits puberty a new set of emotions storm the brain, Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui... and these emotions create havoc, chaos and near disaster but all with the best intentions.

I sat there next to my daughter seeing so much of her in Riley and the changes that are already showing themselves and was so grateful that I'll have this movie to refer to when some of those difficult emotions start to rule the day.

As Joe Biden would say: "Anyway.... Look, the fact of the matter is... Upside Down... here's the deal: its a hell of a motion picture, jack."

I also did a little cooking and I have a recipe for you! It's a dish I had in Florence at a restaurant called Trattoria Mario, but is served all over the region called Ribollita, or you could call it Tuscan Stew... It's a very simple white bean and vegetable soup which uses stale bread that dissolves into the broth to thicken it up. It came out great and even the kids didn't complain! I used croutons as a substitute for the stale bread and it worked fine. Give it a try! It's Vegan!

Last night Marilyn and I started watching Animal Crackers, The Marx Brother's first movie (I think?) I think I'd seen it years ago, but it was pretty great and we'll finish it tonight. But right off the bat, it's wild to see them so young and with this insane "how are we getting away with this" energy. It feels so alive and dangerous - you can see them nearly breaking and not giving a shit the whole time. There's also about a million puns in the first 20 minutes. You do have to endure some stupid musical numbers and a inane plot holding it together, but check it out just for the set pieces with the boys. There's definitely a through line from them to the work I do. I can see it plain as day. It's on Amazon Prime!

Off to Florida tomorrow to see my dad and try and avoid being eaten by a shark. The odds are not great and I will probably be eaten by a shark at some point but hopefully not before Tuesday, where I'll be sitting in front of you from my Air B&B. I believe we'll have Emma Vigland calling in to talk politics, gaza and whatever else - We'll try and keep it light, but I'm excited to talk to her, I've found her and Sam and their crew to be a voice of reason in these dark days.

I hope you're staying cool and having a good summer!

Peace and Love,T

Loved the movie too! Two small things @Tim you said you've been chatting with Mark Volman recently? His Partner Howard Kaylan of Flo and Eddie fame wrote a GREAT rock n roll Autobiography called 'Shellshocked' and theres a crazy story of them meeting the Beatles! You Have to read it and get him on the show!

Phil Copley

Love the family report! I was nervous about Inside Out 2 since I loved the first movie, so I’m relieved to hear it’s good. Speaking of dads: I saw the first movie with my dad years ago in theaters and he fell asleep at the end, which was par for the course for him in other parts of my life. Glad you’re a dad that pays attention. Enjoy the time with YOUR dad, and don’t get too shark-bitten!

Animal Crackers is the second Marx Brothers movie. Cocoanuts is their first.

My daughter has been asking to see inside out 2! I’m glad it was good! Now I’m really looking forward to it.

Sarah Reeds

I just saw that the (beautiful) Vista Theater is showing the Marx Brothers’ “Monkey Business” (1931), their first original screenplay film, July 20th and 21st.

Emma’s going to be great! She’s going to Kamala old Seder sometime soon!

I took my kids to a great IHoP just off the 95 near Viera Florida. Right next to a friendly 7-11 gas station. I'll send you the details.

Sheridan Flynn

Here's the deal!

Thank you Tim. Definitely having a cool summer here in Glasgow - 14 degrees 😩 Could do with some Florida sun… 🦈

Joss Humberstone

Tim can you talk about Toni and Tim’s couples massage in the next post? Really dying to know the story behind that

Evan Swope

Hi Tim, some shark advice for you. When she takes a hold of you, go for the eyes and push in as hard as you can. It should let go and possibly even leave you alone. If not, try rubbing the snout. This disorients the shark and can even trigger a catatonic state. Could save your life. A special shout out to shark week for educating me.

Evan

In the last two weeks since seeing Inside Out 2, I’ve recommended it to every therapy client and friend I’ve seen.

Stu Walker

The “feels like” temp in Central Florida where I am has been over 100 consistently for a few weeks. If you don’t get eaten by a shark you’ll die from heat stroke. Hopefully you make it to Tuesday

Dan

When we saw Inside Out 1 in theaters I sobbed. Can't wait to see 2. Emotional intelligence is so important and I wish I'd had these movies as a kid. Maybe it would have made being a teenager less overwhelming and scary. You better watch out for sharks, they'll probably find you extra delicious because of all the ground beef and blueberries

Melissa

This is beautiful ❤️

This post reminded me how much I love your song ‘dark days’…..spinning that now. When does the rest of the ‘live at Kevin’s’ drop?

Jim D.

What a show. I hope all the Patreoners enjoy their summer

Eric

Tim Brooks

Hope you're right but doesn't seem like it

I wonder if you tried any cold soups while in Italy?? It's hard to fathom eating hot soup about now but I saw this gal making the ribollita on PBS one morning a couple of months ago. It looked so good, thanks for the reminder to make it at some point, maybe when the weather goes back to less extreme. I finally watched Inside Out (1) last week priming for Inside Out 2. I'd never heard of it somehow. I saw a therapist a couple of years ago that used this method where you gave each of your emotions a physical character. She encouraged me to make little sketches of each one. Then you treat them as helpers that come out when they see a need. You have a little chat with them, thank them, maybe ask them to step back for a bit but you never try to cut them out. It was helpful in that it aligned with another psychologist I like who taught me to ward off some forms of physical pain by just accepting a stressful feeling rather than trying to push it away. You accept that it will wane on its own. I've avoided back spasms doing this. You feel it coming on and do a scan, for me it's usually feeling discouraged and then you just sit with it for minute. Like magic the spasm doesn't fully develop.

that's a good Heritage Foundation talking point but it's a little more complicated than that. https://www.wisconsinrightnow.com/joe-biden-replaced-wisconsin/

I have mostly only seen Duck Soup but the first time I saw the Tattoo scene with the doghouse it reminded me of Tim and Eric and has been in my brain rent free ever since https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=konSjXrhrQE&pp=ygUWZHVjayBzb3VwIHRhdHRvbyBzY2VuZQ%3D%3D

You cant replace a candidate in Wisconsin unless they die and Nevada the deadline to change candidates was June 28th.

Animal Crackers

MistyMountainBlowTorch

One of the main character's family name is Rittenhouse. 1:30 mins in to this video and I'm apprehensive of what Tim's trying to push on us! ;) Love you Tim!

MistyMountainBlowTorch

Please don’t get, or let anybody get, eaten by a shark. Introduce the sharks to the vegan stew instead!

Bill R Tomison

I give "inside out 2" five bags of ribolita.
