Kyle Kinane, Mdou Moctar (Episode 296)

Oil up your beard and break out the triple IPA because standup guy/comedian Kyle Kinane joined us from Portland to share some fun and laughs, along with a tribute to the late, great Steve Albini (12:02), a zoom from our old friend/new movie star Uncle Phil ("The People's Joker") (38:40) and Tim's recap of the original "Planet of the Apes" (46:17). And then hold onto your hair because it could easily be blown off from our exclusive studio session with African guitar master Mdou Moctar and his red hot band performing “Sousome Tamachek" (1:02:07) and "Imagerhan" (2:07:47) live in our studio. PLUS, a master debate between Tim and Vic on Jerry Seinfeld's "Unfrosted" movie (1:18:03), Vic's Chicago band game (1:41:13), and a surprise zoom-in from Doug and Eric Andre (1:35:31). Starts @ 1:42.

Kyle Kinane, Mdou Moctar (Episode 296)

Comments

Im back to say i realize i came in pretty hot a month ago, and i didn't mean to bombast you with my own feelings of urgency regarding the matter. I understand that people are protective of their anti-heroes and the willingness to let transgressions slide. Heck, even the Night Stalker had ladies lining up to marry him in jail. Anyway, peace & love.

Tim Erbes

That episode would be right in my Q zone.

Devon Summers

Dying to know the Trinity's take on Ricky Stanicky.

Devon Summers

Hell yesss Mdou Moctar omg!!!

Miguel

I agree with Tim mostly, the premise and the fantasy elements had me grinning ear to ear. I just couldn’t get past the 40% stinker jokes that were clearly shoehorned in by Seinfeld himself.

Sean Enright

Are you telling me the article he wrote about his personal posession of Pure magazine + his friendship with Peter Sotos was just clumsily executed performance art? Sounds more like a brazen confession than an extended edgelord joke. Why leave such a margin for ambiguity when the stakes are that high? It reads more like a guy who got too comfortable in his punk bubble & outed himself.

Tim Erbes

I read this and here’s Phil’s two cents. I don’t think Steve was “into it”. I think this is his version of “shock” comedy? It reminds me of when James Gunn made several Twitter posts that were along the lines of “I like…” and it be something about sexual encounters with minors - where the mere words preceding the awful ending were there to let you know “this is a joke”. Maybe a tasteless joke but still a joke. No one puts this in print if they really mean it. Steve tells you with the last paragraph and the sentence before the last paragraph by saying to the effect of “anyone who likes this kind of stuff, like me, has a problem”…this isn’t literal, in my interpretation, but a self deprecating joke that also says “it’s obvious this is awful and I don’t believe this”…even if not so obvious. That’s how it reads to me. Plus, and again, he’s publishing this in a magazine. That should be the biggest tip this is said with shocking tongue in cheek.

Phil Braun

Also just watched Sorcerer for the first time and loved it. If you haven't already, watch The Plot Against Harry by Michael Roemer. A sort of lost classic beautifully restored.

Brian Rinaldi

I got the chocolate bar album number right.

Matt Dekker

Maybe this all coming out now and people are just finding out: https://medium.com/@MoonMetropolis/now-that-steve-albini-is-dead-lets-reflect-on-his-admitted-love-and-promotion-of-child-fadf5072288e

"Acting" ... Yes. Okay. You're goading this woke snowflake (wow! here we are!) to continue, but I shall not. Question, though. Who was 860? Truly the MVP of the episode. In my years of patronizing this show, probably my favorite caller ever. If you choose not to reveal yourself masked man, that's OK. Please call in again. You fucking rule, Mr. Odenk- ... oh shit! ... Anonymous Caller!

rainbowdark

I hadn’t heard about any of that stuff but did a Quick Look at the controversy and without looking too deeply into it, it seems to me a case of intentionally offense writing which was definitely a “thing” in the pre 4Chan days. Sick humor that would populate amongst friends and seep into underground punk publications. I’m pretty sure he acknowledged it and regretted it… Captain Carlin may know more about it.

Tim Heidecker

The Albini love here seems strange to me. He was kind of a sick fuck, no? Like who openly endorses a child porn magazine!?

Tim Erbes

Boys, book Etran de L'Aïr next. P&LP&L

KD

Kyle was an absolute treat and treasure

Daniel Date

I was impressed by Vic and Doug’s acting honestly, they made it feel like nerve wracking but luckily I waited 30seconds before mailing by letter to the police.

Steven Meltzer

yes Tim should have a movie podcast too!

Johnnee

Also, Kyle is a top tier guest for sure!

Johnnee

we need a Tim and Guapdad 4000 collab plz. Also Tierra Whack is from Philly please get her on the show Whack World is a classic!

Johnnee

Awareness of these things keeps some people up at night, other people clearly not so much. I personally would prefer to not be reminded of it in a place I come to laugh and have fun, but that's just me. Just me. Anyway. The show got the message and I'm extremely ready to stop beating on this and get back to ✌️&❤️

rainbowdark

I'm aware of what's happening in Gaza but think it's sort of a stretch to connect that to a stupid off hand joke made during a fake prank call.

Painthuffer2

The Doors - Wintertime Love is the GOAT. Give it a shot. Doors deep cuts are way better.

Patrick

Mdou absolutely brought it down. What a treat.

WB

Type 'hospital bombing' into google and ask yourself if this is tactful joke fodder these days. There you go.

rainbowdark

Oh my god yes please

Richard Farrands

Loving those snappy drums from Mdou Moctar - awesome!

Joss Humberstone

So what was the issue then? Genuine question, not trying to rile you!

Painthuffer2

GrEAT episode boys

Thomas Dunleavy

Vic’s take on Unfrosted makes me wonder if he has ever seen a movie before or if he understands what a movie is. I am with Tim on this. I intended to hate watch it but actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

Kris of Nazareth

What about the chips! I haven't tried the ones that taste like a drink, I have tried conditioner that smells like thin-mint cookies though!

Athena

I did another version of Tim's RFK joke, it's something like, "and they're saying this worm in RFK's head was trying to feed on his brain...so needless to say the worm died of MALNUTRITION!" Never mind I like Tim's better, I don't even know why I did this. I'm so stupid.

Mick Zazworsky

Tim, check out WAGES OF FEAR (1953)!

Kazu Watanabe

also, thought the prerecorded musical guest segment looked and sounded greeeaat. more of those would be welcome :)

Scrud

i'd watch weekly, hour long episodes of "tim's movie recap". i love when that golden ticket hits the screen.

Scrud

kyle kinane is a funny man!

Girshwin Chapdelaine

by the way, how about getting Connor O’Malley on the show?

Jack

Alarming that some of y'all still can't parse that this wasn't the issue. Proud member of the OHL woke mob 🫡

rainbowdark

i only know sorcerer from the tangerine dream soundtrack. gotta go with vic on the pop-tarts movie. kyle kinane rules. glad doug called in. RIP steve albini. i think that covers it, great episode guys!

marshy

If this show was about numbers, (which it's not!) I'd have to say my favorite Chicago song is 25 or 6 to 4!! 😃😄😃

Athena

Can you even imagine the type of person that would think that?

Painthuffer2

Alarming that some of y'all thought 9-1-1 bit was real...

Daniel Sparrow

Great to see Rosie and hello Kyle!! Loved the musical break too! Wow Tims hair looked so good I couldn't stop thinking about it at work today, welcome back!

Athena

Sides are extremely split on who won this debate. Only time will tell, and only one thing is for certain: We need more debates. Vic both takes notes and sips fluids. Do not underestimate him.

rainbowdark

Nah, Tim is right, the movie was fine. Vic just doesn’t like having fun, nor does he like to laugh

Drew Schooley

Just to make the Chicago game even more confusing, there actually is no Chicago 4, they went from 3 to 5. Chicago live at Carnegie Hall is #4 so when Kyle was guessing 4 for all of them he should have maybe gotten a point for Carnegie Hall. They also seemed to include Greatest Hits albums in their number system, which is nonsense imo, so there isn’t really a Chicago 9, 15, or 20…

My Boot

have not seen unfrosted but team vic all the way

Natasha Ryan

Shout out to Vic’s nail polish. Fellow nail painter over here. 💅🏼

Jared

Mdou Moctor gave me chills!

Journe

Chicago 19 is post-Peter Cetera. Sad that I know this.
