Toronto Livin' Again
Added 2024-03-23 14:17:29 +0000 UTCGood morning everyone, back to my regular Saturday posts after a couple of wild weekends!
Sitting up here in Toronto on Day 3 of sitting around. I got up here Tuesday morning after the red eye, went in for a fitting later in the day - had nothing but office hours on Wednesday, and then didn't shoot until around 11 pm on Thursday. So... I'm getting a little antsy!
Thursday night's scene had me playing some squash so I went in early to the racquet club to meet with Paul and some of the writers to play some pickleball and then get a few squash lessons from Paul before we shot. Squash is of course a lot like Racquetball which Doug and I used to play at the YMCA when we both first moved to LA. It's so fun and a great way to almost IMMEDIATELY get a sweat going.
It snowed here yesterday, so I mainly hung around the room, got caught up on some writing, took a few meetings about some upcoming stuff, and watched some TV - I watched That Dan Schneider documentary about the dark side of kids TV. Holy Shit. What a dark and terrible world! That Dan Schneider fucker should be sent to a desert island. Yikes, what a creepy asshole. I tried watching his little apology interview and was nauseated by it.
I caught up on Curb... yikes. That show is now barely watchable to me. It's got some laughs here and there, but the only really genuinely funny stuff was coming from Tracy Ullman's character and now her arc's wrapped up. I watched The Sting because I listened to a podcast about the making of it and I hadn't seen it in a while. Jeez, what a perfect little movie! So great. It's on Netflix if you've never seen it. It's a really good time.
I got an email from a friend asking me to help with a fundraiser, which you may have seen on my Instagram and it seemed like an easy and very practical way to help so I happily pushed it... If you haven't donated yet, please consider throwing them some dough.
Of course, there was the smattering of dopes in the comments saying I'm rich and I should just pay for it all! Or why don't you let them stay at your place? I'd like to convene a summit of all these people and give them all wedgies. But most people were kind and appreciative and I know it really boosted the fundraiser. I hope it works out for that family. I continue to be gripped with despair, rage, and paralysis by the tragedy unfolding in Gaza. But I think we gotta find places where we try and make a tangible difference where we can.
If you're thirsty for some On Cinema talk, I'm enjoying the On The Funny podcast which had some very nice, insightful things to say about this past season and has part one of their Oscar Special coverage up now. I appreciate their love and respect for the show and the hard work that our team devotes to the special every year.
Nothing on the books for this cold sunny day today, but tomorrow I've got a full plate: I discovered On Cinema super fan Ryan Phillippe is also in town so we're going to get lunch tomorrow, then me and Chris Robison are gonna meet up and do a little recording of a certain ballad from the Oscar Special... then an early dinner with Mark and Paul Simms. Then I should have a busy week of shooting, my pals Rajat, Jeremy, and Alyssa will finally be back in town, and I'll lament that I didn't just enjoy nothing to do for a few days.
We're fully OFF next week so we'll see you April 4th my friends!
Peace and Love, T

I still laugh more at Curb than pretty much anything else. There’s only so many social mishaps to play around with, but it’s still great fun.

2024-03-25 04:22:57 +0000 UTCTracy's character and her portrayal has to be one of the funniest characters in the history of television. Every time she's on screen it's a gift. And whoever does her costume/wardrobe design is a genius. I still love the show though; to each his own. I can agree however its not as good as it once was.

2024-03-25 02:41:21 +0000 UTCMy only bone to pick is Curb. I've been crying uncontrollably, howling with laughter, many times this season. My partner and I have often commented on how he's going out on such a high. Just shows how subjective comedy can be I guess. I dunno. Anyway, still love you all and Office Hours is my favourite two hours of entertainment every week. Thank you guys.

2024-03-24 00:54:17 +0000 UTCThanks for recommending that podcast On The Funny. I've already dived in and love it. I need to feed my On Cinema habit. I've just binged the whole thing, plus all the Oscar specials, The Trial, all the Dekkers and everything. It's a true work of art and the character of Tim Heidecker is one of the great comic creations of all time. The only other thing that comes close, I think would be Alan Partridge.

2024-03-24 00:47:30 +0000 UTCThe Sting is amazing! It was kind of my comfort classic movie back in the day. great storytelling lesson in how to showcase characters with tight, punchy lines and story beats. Also Paul Newman and Robert Redford sparkled 👌. I can never decide who's my favorite in that. Thanks for the vampire teasers! My writer's brain immediately thought up of these theoretical pickleball scenarios that I think you'd rock (no I still haven't caught up on season 5 yet): 1) Aggressive Bro, might come in two flavors a) asshole, ruthless b) still mean but has standards and follows the rules 2) Team Player Bro, wants to build camaraderie with the other player(s). Might be a pushover that we all come to love. 3) Teacher Bro, wants to bond with the other player(s) and nurture/guide them. Can be kind. Will probably die. I still haven't given up on the headcanon wishes of the flipped power dynamic between you and Mark. Hope you enjoy this last day "off" before all your excellent artisting. Thanks for using your platform for good, every little bit counts.

2024-03-23 21:45:43 +0000 UTCI love The Sting. What was the podcast? Over the years of rewatching it I noticed it’s a hat movie. Each hat is perfectly chosen for each character.

2024-03-23 16:55:25 +0000 UTCDavid rehashed at least three themes from old Seinfeld episodes too. One was the coveting of someone else’s pen, then that person begrudgingly giving him the pen (space pen) #2 all the baby names centered around Mickey mantle ala the famous George wanting to name his child “7” I have to admit every name he suggested were hilarious old timey almost cowboy names. I can’t help the things that the whole show is gonna wrap up just like Seinfeld dead with him, going to jail in the south for a stupid law. There was another one too, but I can’t think of it. see if you can! Agree, Tracy Allman was killing it

2024-03-23 16:54:35 +0000 UTCYou gotta read “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy !!! Talks about Dan Schneider somewhat and what the actress playing Sam from iCarly went thru. Very good showbiz book and very dare I say important

2024-03-23 16:53:20 +0000 UTCWelcome back to the Big Smoke, sorry about that mess of a snowstorm yesterday. My rec of the day: Ali Wong is also in town for a couple of shows later this week. I think tickets are still available too. I became a believer after watching the impossibly good Beef from 2023. Highly recommended!

2024-03-23 16:38:33 +0000 UTCMan, people will find ways to be negative about everything. You're doing what you can by sharing the fundraiser to a ton of listeners, which is way more of a contribution than most people could make. Genuinely- thank you so much for sharing Hana and the Awad family's story. I found it to be both inspiring and heartbreaking. I hope hope hope her family can make it out ASAP. The GoFundMe is making good progress... Hana's story specifically really resonated with me, as my boyfriend is currently applying to graduate engineering programs like hers. مِنَ النَّهْرِ إِلى البَحْرِ سَتَتَحَرَّرُ فِلَسْطِينْ

2024-03-23 15:27:20 +0000 UTCRyan Phillippe! We went to the same weird baptist christian school. I remember him seeming like a cool dude but was always afraid to talk to him because i comparatively felt like a NERD. That same weird baptist christian school eventually expelled me for various unholy shenanigans. I distinctly remember the principal citing the reason for my explusion being that I was, quote unquote "The Devil Child" ... Still very proud of that!

2024-03-23 15:22:45 +0000 UTCmaybe you should go back on “on the funny” after they’re done talking about the oscar special and let them know if what they’re speculating is true.

2024-03-23 14:35:30 +0000 UTCWoah 13 minutes ago? You must be on European time. Which makes sense for canada. It is the Europe of America. My friend : Man that foot guy is gonna get metooed one of these days just you wait. Me, every time : I'm pretty sure Dan Schneiders numbers been called already My friend, also every time: No dude, I'm talking about Quentin Tarantino. Mark my words. I'm nearly 40 so apologies if that meme is old and tired but this is a conversation we keep having; also probably because we are getting old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcKkEhlCu9w&ab_channel=AmericanPronunciationGuide this compilation needs to be updated with Joey P. Probably one of my favourite gags from the oscar special, subverting expectations and having a host pronounce a name correctly that is commonly mispronounced by everyone <3
