Joanna!
Added 2024-03-02 16:23:08 +0000 UTCHey folks that was a fun show! Yes we miss Doug like hell but somehow we carry on. He’ll be back next week!
Last night I took Millie to see Joanna at the Barnsdall Theater. She was so excited, as I played her a bit of Joanna and she was really into it. And really excited to go out to a concert and stay up late.
The little theater, atop a hill in Los Feliz was really great, if not a little formal… Kevin Morby, who we immediately ran into said “I feel like I’m here to vote!” Nice to see Kevin and we had a little catch up before the music began.
My only gripe was with the sound guy. Captain Carlin who was also there can attest! This dude was riding things too high! He was blasting the levels in a room where you might not have needed any PA at all. It was tinny and just on the verge of “taking off.” He was also sitting right up front don’t all the way to the left, distinctly not in front of the speakers. He had his dumb iPad that he occasionally futzed with. Millie and I both had to shove toilet paper in our ears.
Johanna Samuels and Alex Orange Drink opened and were both very good. Samuels brought her dog out with her. Very winning!
Sternberg was beyond belief! I hadn’t listened to them before the show, which I like to do sometimes to get a fresh perspective! But after the show I dug into their latest record and fell in love. Of course, there’s lots of Randy Newman and Van Dyke parks, especially in their piano songs. Their stage presence was funny and disarming and really entertaining. I highly recommend you check them out if they come anywhere near your area.

What a great blessing it is to get to do Office Hours and continually get to be exposed to new art and music and comedy and thinkers each week. I hope you appreciate it as much as I do.
I’m writing this to you this morning from the lobby of Amelia‘s orthodontist. That’s right: rock show Friday night.... 8 AM. Dental appointment Saturday morning. Let’s fucking go.

2024-03-03 04:56:54 +0000 UTCIt’s heartening to know that you feel the same—or more—joy we viewers do at all the discoveries OHL offers. I recently likened this to you as unearthing treasures from a riverbed, which I feel definitely applies for the indie artists. The variety of connections on OHL seem all-encompassing of the human condition in a way that strengthens existence, ranging from the good, the bad, the ugly, and what we can do about it. The guests are so genuine and open about their creative processes, hopes, fears; it all makes for a very organic back-and-forth with everyone, including you. I hope OHL continues to bring you joy, and I’m glad to be able to share that with you as a viewer for as long as it lasts. Hopefully for a while 💕

2024-03-02 23:09:08 +0000 UTCGot to see them open for Conor Oberst in Kalamazoo, Joanna is truly what you call a “songwriter”, I was getting married around their latest album coming out and I wanted the whole thing for wedding songs. Beautiful stuff. Checking out those openers now!
