Friday Night Was INSANE
Added 2024-02-24 15:36:06 +0000 UTCHey gang - hope you're having a wonderful weekend. Still riding high off that show with Maria and Scott on Thursday. That was really fun! It's been nice being home for a bit and taking it a little easy, picking up the kids from school and hanging with them. Funny kids!
Last night, we went out for some sushi down the road, and on the way back, Marilyn had to drop off something to another parent - They were the parents of Charlie's best pal at the school, so Charlie and Marilyn ran up to the house and went in, while Millie and I hung back. Marilyn came back a few minutes later and was like - We have to go in. Oy. A visit.
We went in and the woman, let's call her A. was like, you're staying for dinner! And we said, oh no we just ate but then the man came out... lets call him C... and was like, no, no, you have to stay... He then produced about 10 giant skewers of raw meat that he was prepping to grill. This was very Armenian! Super friendly, but... you are our guests and we are going to feed you. There's no question about it. "What do you want to drink?" he asked... I saw he had many bottles of all kinds of whiskey and scotch. I didn't want to be rude and had a little Jack Daniels. So, here I am now, a minute ago on the way home to get ready for our softball practice, sitting in a stranger's home (ok I had met them briefly a few times) having a drink and awaiting grilled meat to eat.
Of course, the kids are in heaven - they've acquainted their home to be very kid-friendly, with arcade games, a popcorn machine, all kinds of games and toys...
We loosened up and had a friendly chat while the meat was being grilled - A made a really delicious salad that I'm eager to try at home: just raw beets, cut real thing with cilantro, lemon, olive oil, salt and garlic powder. They also had some buckwheat grain dish, like a rice that was very good. The meat was very well seasoned and nicely grilled. It was delish!
We left Charlie with them and headed to Softball practice which we learned after getting there had been CANCELLED! But we did throw the ball around for a bit and ran into a few people who also didn't know it was cancelled. WE talked local politics for a bit, as there's a primary election coming up and a vote for Glendale City Council. My friend, let's call him D, was telling me about Karen Kwak! What! He was very into her and she seemed alright to me! I'm gonna try and get her on the show next week and will ask Vic and Doug to abstain from any duck sounds... If you're in Glendale take a look at Karen Kwak!
Did my clickbait title get ya? It was ironic as it wasn't all that insane, was it?
Off to Toronto tonight on the Red Eye for more Shadows but will be back time for Office Hours LIVE next week!
Until then,
ALL THE BEST! - t

2024-03-02 19:40:41 +0000 UTCVery jealous about you being able to start softball. I live in Canada and my daughter is so into softball, but won't be able to play any games until late April. She's so excited. Thanks for the update Tim!

2024-02-26 18:52:23 +0000 UTCKind of fearing these local elections Tim. I don't know if he's in your district but this Jordan Henry guy is bad news, and I feel like I'm seeing his signs in way too many peoples yards.

2024-02-26 15:17:35 +0000 UTCI had a similar thing happen with my in laws Armenian neighbors. We had just finished dinner and went outside to look at a beautiful sunset, and they called us over to look at it from their deck which was higher up. They offered us food (grilled meat!), and we tried to decline but they insisted and ended up staying for a couple hours and having way too much to drink. Fun night!

2024-02-26 15:14:29 +0000 UTCI didnt think the words Recorder and Rad could ever go together in a sentence but I never considered using the words Kyle Gass and Solo in that sentence. Whats next? Vuvuzelas and vivacious?

2024-02-25 12:33:56 +0000 UTCScott would be a great fill in when Doug is out. His laughter with the drops really got Vic going 😂

2024-02-25 04:50:06 +0000 UTCSorry but I started getting a vibe and skipped forward and read that it wasn't actually that insane before I read the body. So I guess it didn't get me. I don't mean this to disappoint you or make you feel sad in any way. This incident has still produced some sort of connection, however indirect. Hope that helps. - t (Dan)

2024-02-25 00:23:18 +0000 UTCSome great Armenian spots in Glendale: Mini Kabob is my favorite restaurant. Order ahead. Cash only. Takeout / delivery mostly. Zhengyalov Hatz is also great and only makes one thing, Zhengyalov Hatz (pita wraps with 12 types of herbs). Dvin Meat Market is a fantastic butcher and will grill your food if you give them a heads up.

2024-02-25 00:09:47 +0000 UTCThat sign off was a punch to my heart 😲❗️😆 Thanks for sharing your slice of life! Sounds like a great break in between all the traveling. That’s really cool Charlie’s got close friends like that; nothing beats being in the home when learning of other cultures. (It was mind blowing for child me when, for dinner at a friend’s, I had rice—with seasonings??—as a side dish 🫨) safe travels! see you next week!

2024-02-24 23:14:43 +0000 UTCJFC People who demand you stay at their place are psychos no matter how nice they may intend/appear to be. You should have taken the good (but not most expensive) booze, Tim. No need for masochism with JD.

2024-02-24 20:09:26 +0000 UTCI love the idea of going over to another parent’s house w/ ur kids. I don’t think I’ll get that opportunity, but it’s so cool to see what normal happy families are like. You’re a good dad, Tim. At least, as far as I can see. The way your kids look at you, I feel like I can tell they’re not only not afraid of you, they even like and admire you. I never would have had those feelings about my father.

2024-02-24 19:49:10 +0000 UTCI think Friday was the day for skewered meat. Yesterday I went with a friend of mine to the local Fogo de Chao and ate too much very delicious meat. Like 5 courses! I could barely walk 🤢

2024-02-24 19:04:18 +0000 UTCsounds amazing and for sure insane. man, i wish i had a time machine or something to go back cuz Glendale was the first place i moved to after graduating CalArts in suburban Valencia. lived off Lexington. Damon’s Steakhouse was one of my first jobs. talk about insane, but for real. one night, at Dave’s bar by the police station, Kyle Gass was there with his band. they let me sit in on drums for a tune. Kyle did a solo on the flute-like instrument known as the Recorder. was rad. your post brings nostalgia but more importantly a sense of community. sometimes those unexpected moments can be most enriching. OHL reminds me to keep an eye out for those moments and i am thankful for it.

2024-02-24 17:28:11 +0000 UTCKwak sounds great. Having someone that's good at math on council, with a humane attitude, is super important IMO. I love the sense of community that you described. My dad grew up there in the 30's and 40's. I have a super old map of Glendale that I kept from his personal effects. Sounds like it's remained idyllic.

2024-02-24 16:18:55 +0000 UTC(Bill Maher voice) and that’s where you’re wrong, Tim. It IS insane. Cancel culture has gone too far, they’re even cancelling sporting events for your kids if you aren’t in lockstep with the woke mob when it comes to appreciating Armenian hospitality on a full stomach.

2024-02-24 16:00:03 +0000 UTCI consider it outrageous that you both assume Vic and Doug would play duck sounds and you would forbid them from playing that sound!!! It’s like telling a kid not to touch the cake while setting it right in from of him
