Getting It Together
Added 2024-02-10 15:57:12 +0000 UTCGood day, my friends! I'm 2 weeks into my Toronto time and haven't been up the big tower once. I think I'm going to fix that today.
I'm settling into a nice routine here, mostly due to so much free time. I worked Tuesday and Friday this week... next week will be busier, but this past week was pretty, as they say, KUSH... even on my work days my pickup times have been noonish. So I've been getting up early, going down to the gym, working out of the Peloton, and then back in my room I've started a new meditation practice that I'm excited about... here's a link to it... Then I shower reply to emails, and get some work done.
It's been nice using this time away and sequestered in the hotel to work on my health, and my mental health and get more productive and organized. I was sucked into a youtube hole on organizing and productivity which led me to some pretty helpful videos about managing calendars and using notes and to-do lists... but it also sent me into a weird area I had no idea existed: Professional Exel Competitions!
What the hell! Anyway, do you have any tips and tricks for staying organized? I've got a lot to keep organizing with The Oscar Special, Tim Fest, and some other projects looming, I gotta use my time wisely!
I watched Sexy Beast on Criterion last night - hadn't seen it in a while and oh man what a movie! God, it's so darkly funny. What a performance from Sir Ben!
By the way, the "On The Funny" guys are back recapping and discussing Season 14 of On Cinema... Taking it episode by episode and it's pretty fun to hear their takes! Check it out on your Podcast of Choice!
Saw the most Canadian thing of all time the other night and will try and recap in prose but may need a performance to do it justice:
We were walking back from dinner the other night and passed a man who looked a bit like Doug Mackenzie approach two Asian college kids. He said urgently: "You know the Leafs score?" They shrugged and politely laughed, and in very broken English said "No, no I don't know..." He looked at them desperately, incredulously asked "You don't follow The LEAFS??!!"
That's it. We kept walking but we all heard it (Jeremy, Rajat and Alyssa) looking back to confirm it really happened. We kept reenacting it, marveling at how weird and wonderful it was! A fun bonus of temporarily living downtown in a real city: just watching and listening to people!
OK then... Off to the tower!

Tim, as a productivity junky, I can highly recommend Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. Really changed my perspective.

2024-02-15 15:47:51 +0000 UTCI just keep a planner, stick to the plan, and jot down even the most inane shit to keep my attention on the plan. As I cross off easy stuff, I get a little dopamine rush.

2024-02-12 11:17:11 +0000 UTCDon't lose time diving into productivity porn. It is the ultimate procrastination. Make a list, get stuff done. Unsubscribe from all emails. Delete things and throw things away. Repeat.

2024-02-11 16:52:53 +0000 UTCBelieve he may have also suggested ZeroZeroZero which is another good crime show. As well, Gomorrah has but tv show AND a movie by the same name about the same subject matter which is also excellent.

2024-02-11 08:18:14 +0000 UTCTim have you watched Gomorrah? Eric recommended in an off hand comment that barely got noticed many moons ago on an episode that I can’t exactly remember. It’s the like The Sopranos, but set in Naples, with great music, and over the top acting/violence. Intense stuff. A bit of a throwback, but would suggest a watch if you want some European TV!

2024-02-10 18:13:46 +0000 UTCLove that you have such great coworkers. That was literally me and my friends when an elderly lady at the next table over a restaurant kept saying "calamari [this]", "calamari [that]", "[something something about that] calamari" in a Missouri accent. I giggle-choked into my soup and tried not to fall out of my chair, we couldn't believe that actually happened. So good to experience chaos with others. That’s awesome you can turn your time working abroad into your own private retreat! I had to indirectly pay for this info so I’m switching word order so I don’t get sued, but I liked how learning how you see time helps you know your strengths and weaknesses and plan in a way that works for you. Hope it is helpful to you. Time styles: PictureBig: Big thinkers but leave out details in plans Approach: more detailed to-do lists, basic routines FocusHyper: Absorbed by detail, has trouble transitioning task to task Approach: Work from a plan that incorporates task bridges. Plan backwards. Work in chunks of time like 20 min. Jumper: are “hoppers” and like to jump task to task, has trouble finishing open items on the list. Gets easily distracted, can get unproductive with too many open things. Approach: Eliminate distractions, work in large, uninterrupted chunks. Timers can help you keep track of the time passing. Keep track of your energy to take breaks during low energy and decrease chances of getting distracted easily. Yeah, I'm a hopper. Yeah, I'm getting professional help for it 🙃 Ba'hee Priss Dimmie and all that jazz

2024-02-10 17:19:29 +0000 UTCI've read some of the book, The Bullet Journal, about how to journal in an organized, efficient fashion to help plan your day. It got complicated for me, more than the effort seemed worth, and the author gets a little too "self-helpy" for my taste, but I took some basic principles of it that I thought were helpful. Supposedly it helps a lot of people to journal in the style the author recommends.

2024-02-10 16:51:06 +0000 UTCAlso revisited Sexy Beast recently, such a great movie. Looking forward to Zone and appreciated hearing your thoughts on it last week

2024-02-10 16:41:48 +0000 UTCTim! If you enjoy hockey, check out drama series ”Börje - the journey of a Legend”. Biopic about Swedish NHL-legend Börje Salming at Toronto Maple Leafs during the 70s. It’s on Crave in Canada. Very good. Film editing by me.

2024-02-10 16:26:41 +0000 UTCHobonichi Cousin - the best planner you can get. It’s a daily, weekly and monthly calendar, to do list, and notebook. It’s Japanese so you know they got this organization thing down.

2024-02-10 16:12:20 +0000 UTCLike you said, utilize those calendar, notes and, especially, the reminders apps. I caretake for an elderly parent, two geriatric cats, plus myself and my full-time job. My phone is always buzzing with my recurring reminders for meds, appointments, calls I need to make, things I need to look up, etc. Siri comes in handy too as I’m always telling her “Remind me to do such-and-such in two hours.” There is no task or reminder too small to not get marked down.
