FALL RECCS!

Goodness, we had loopy fun Thursday night.  Love a good night show every once in a while.  Thank you live viewers for adjusting to my whacky schedule.

Like I said on the show, I've been into Westerns lately.  Something comforting about them, I suppose.  Talking to Eric on the commercial we were directing,  we both talked about craving entertainment that acts as true escapism and takes us to another time and place... That's probably part of it right there...   I just watched Red River and it's very good, and some incredible filmmaking going on - one notable piece is seeing Montgomery Clift play against John Wayne. They're both great but they say that Clift is one of the first from the new school of acting that will bring us Marlon Brando, James Dean etc... and there's just something wild and different and modern in his performance that's really cool to see pop out of a movie from 1948.

And so my Western kick led me into dipping into 1883, the Yellowstone prequel, on my flight to NYC last Sunday. I ate it up... watched the whole season by the time I got back home Thursday afternoon. I don't think I have any interest in watching Yellowstone, but I will check out the other prequel 1923.

In some very upsetting news, Phil alerted me to this THEFT this morning.

If you happen to be in LA this weekend, I'm doing a song for this show tomorrow night

I've chosen the song "Bit Part" from the Lemonheads.  Truthfully if you asked me what my favorite song was when I was 16, I think it'd have be to some Beatles song but they wanted something current to the time, and so when I looked up 1992, I saw that great record "It's A Shame About Ray" and picked that song. It's such a fun, poppy, pre-grunge piece of work that I remember listening to A LOT!  I especially love the cover of "Frank Mills"  from the musical Hair!

Don't forget to check out Jon Glaser's new record!

Here's a perfect Kinks song.

OK, so whadda got? What are you reading, watching, listening to? cooking? what's keeping you sane and centered?   Sound off, family!

peace and love, T

I'm like a month late to this but give this a listen if you're looking for something a little different to listen to. The 9 minutes of harmonies leading up to the faster paced songs is really enjoyable and gorgeous. One of my all-time favorite groups, if not my favorite. https://youtu.be/wP_0P_4bl78?si=BjnoKfhTIvOynGRU

@Tim thanks for reading a few of my reccs on the OHL 🙏

A few playlists for you guys, because I care. Mainly electronic stuff to balance out the rock stuff you lot seem to love. This here is a random collection of music from Africa (primarily western and southern) and not all of it is electronic. My main focus was to stick with stuff that was bright/chill. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIY6nONWzRVi638h18crgGK_NZds9fZSY Atmospheric techno, aka techno with airy/emotional atmosphere. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIY6nONWzRVjv6XZzxuP_EbPX8ESgy3SC A mix of stuff varyingly called melodic/deep/organic house. Deep house proper has more funk/soul influence. This offshoot is more emotive and soft. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIY6nONWzRVhd8jOsmi2buCyTe5Jmdoz7

Tim Beers

Tim I think you'd really be a fan of the record I just put out. Off beat pop/rock stuff with a dark but humorous bent. i live in atlanta but I'd love to perform on the show . https://jakecook1.bandcamp.com/album/j-e-r-k-s

Museum of Home Video. Www.museumofhomevideo.com. It’s a weekly live show streamed tues nights at 7:30 that is pretty wonderfully curated -found footage from our childhoods, you tube rabbit holes we all would go down, there is a show specific to childhood programming and one about New York. It’s very nostalgic and funny and every week I remember a commercial jingle or old newscaster I enjoyed in the 80s. They do a music video show some fridays as well which is fun.

The Proposition, a John Hillcoat western film or (re)read Blood Meridian

MadWatcher

I just rewatched the nature special on the wolves of Chernobyl

Anima

I recommend “Michael and Us” , a podcast about film critique / analysis of ideology and politics in film. Its called Michael and us bc they began by talking about Michael Moore films.. but they’ve since done episodes on many films like Forrest Gump, matrix, election , children of men, etc. discussing / dissecting ideology in film

Babak Golshahi

Watch this — it’s a good correction to a lot of what’s misleading in that show https://youtu.be/6GFpcd1x44I?si=go1lVrviO_MlRF3d

Proposition rules, incredible soundtrack.

here’s the Bill Watterson video, if anyone wants to check it out. (15 mins) https://youtu.be/HHND7L1wUl0?si=aJkdf8Zu7LfMxnzQ

g_niac

i recently watched a video on Bill Watterson’s new book and the creative process going into it. Calvin and Hobbes were my absolute favorites growing up. so much so, i wrote a letter to Bill Watterson pleading him to not retire. his publishers sent a letter back and included a color print of a Calvin and Hobbes panel. so cool. can post the letter, if i can find it. it’s in one of my Calvin and Hobbes books, i think

g_niac

"The Tall T" is also great!

Will Ochs

I'm recommending the Budd Boetticher's western Ride Lonesome. Been watching his criterion released westerns lately, definitely recommend them.

RegalCaveman

Take a bath and listen to the least terrible FM radio station you can find. It’s a great feeling.

hayley deherrera

I’ve been really into westerns lately too. Shane is the best western movie I’ve ever seen and the ‘60s Wild Wild West tv show is my safe place

sarah g.w.

yeah, neither have i. not even familiar with them. I like it bc it’s like an old school gauntlet overhead dungeon crawl.

Sam Zide

with peace and love that does not sound very good!

Tim Heidecker

Take a thick corn chip like TJ’s organic dippers. Dip in a thick hi qual plain full fat greek yogurt like Fage. Less heartburn than salsa and dang satisfying

Mike OC

Just heard some new songs from Aesop Rock … he sounds amazing, like when I was in middle school in the 90s! would be a good guest … we need to hear more from Gen X you are the middle child between boomers and millennials

Anima

Alan Partridges' new book Big Beacon, hilarious

Joe Bellis

Tim, I know you're not too much of a gamer but Red Dead Redemption 2 is an incredible contribution to the Western genre and totally hits that level of escapism that you're talking about.

Michael Rendini

Denzel Washington’s vigilante movies (Man on Fire, Equalizer series) and Lou Reed’s Street Hassle

I am interested. I’ve heard it’s great and love my ps5. Worth it even if I haven’t played Diablo 1-3?

On this week’s “Open to Debate” podcast, which is like a public radio debate program that does a great job in general, there’s a debate about whether “Wokeness is Killing Comedy”. It’s a kind of tired discussion at this point but Michael Ian Black, who is arguing No, does very well as exposing the fallacy of that argument. Anyway, I recommend!

hagclaims8

I’m gonna check that out. Will York also worked on Michael Belfer’s (The Sleepers) memoir When Can I Fly? Definitely recommended. https://hozacrecords.com/product/when-can-i-fly/ And while I’m here, I’ll plug the album Will and I put out a few years ago. He’s a renaissance man https://fogmachine.bandcamp.com/album/fog-machine

Tim W.

Tim, watch Johnny Guitar! It’s on the Criterion Channel and it’s fantastic.

Luke Thompson

Unhalfbricking and liege and leaf by - fairport convention. They both came out in 1969. It's my favourite period of the band, they were living out in the British countryside all together writing and rehearsing in the same house. The Richard Thompson and sandy denny era was short but very special while it lasted. I duck out after these records but they are incredibly special. If you've not heard who knows where the time goes I'd start with that. Saying all this you could already be hip to it so my bad if so.

Nick Grant

That would be pretty cool! I've been meaning to pick up the complete Eightball!

Joss Humberstone

I’ve been rewatching all of Fincher (inspired by Blank Check pod) culminating with The Killer. His films go perfectly with the fall darkness and chill. I really liked The Game which I had never seen!

Listening to : Letta Mbulu! She came into my stratosphere somehow within the past few weeks and I've come to find out that she fled from apartheid in her home in South Africa in the 60s. *Insert comment about the relevance to current events.* Not necessarily a Tim reccomendation, but I'm sure I can put a fellow patron on to her. 'Nomalizo' is a super fun, loungey low-key dance track. Letta's ultra beautiful & smooth voice makes it for me. Reading: The Future Is Female: 25 classic pulp sci-fi stories written by women (including my Goddess Ursula K Le Guin) It had some stories I liked quite a bit, some just kinda, and others I skipped outright after only a page. I still reccomend though if you're into sci-fi reads, I think? Take that as you'd like! Excited to read through everyone else's!

Miranda Thiessen

Listening to Letta Mbulu. She came into my stratosphere within the past few weeks and I've come to learn that she fled from apartheid in South Africa in the 60's. *insert comment about the relevance to current events* I recommend 'Nomalizo' such a fun low-key dance track with Letta's smooth vocals. Not so much a recommendation for Tim if he's reading but I'm sure I can turn a fellow patron on to it! Also just finished The Future Is Female: 25 classic pulp science fiction stories by women (including my Goddess, Ursula K) It had some stories that I really liked, sorta liked, and didn't like, so do with that info as you wish. Excited to go through everyone else's reccs!

Nobody puts one over on Fred C. Dobbs!

Will Ochs

I live in Portland and listen to your station all the time. Thanks for volunteering.

Bobert

My favourite Western is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bogart’s performance is so deeply troubling that it will stay with you forever

Arthur G. Pym

It’s funny you should mention that because I was just taking with my wife about how David Lynch should make the movie version. Monica is great. So is his Eight Ball work.

Bobert

one of my favorites is Bone Tomahawk! really feels like a classic movie. big western head over here!

Tim P.

The new Let It Bleed edition of The Replacements “Tim” is a masterful remix. You hear things that weren’t on the original.

Bobert

Too bad all those classic Fox westerns are currently locked away in the Disney Vault....

Will Ochs

Thanks Tim! Big westernhead. Will check out 1883. Here Martin Scorsese lectures on the western from his excellent, hard-to-find 1995 documentary "A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies." https://youtu.be/miHgdsXVcIQ?si=4JzKR_-b6yrFi4aE&t=1768

potato salad with very thin slices of jalapeño

Blake Buesnel

Aussie western The Proposition with Guy Pearce. So good it’s one of the few flicks I have hard copy. You Don’t Know my Name from same kinks album just added to my reg playlist before I saw Tim post. Of course Celluloid Heroes is beautiful

Mike OC

I’m not a video game player typically, Diablo IV has been my recent dumb out, time suck. Like you said Tim, something that transports you to another time and place. This game zips the ticket for me. Btw thank you Vic for the you tube channel recommendation!!!✌️🤍🖤

Sam Zide

Tim I know this might not be exactly a western but did you ever watch the hateful eight? I was also a big fan of true grit.

Steven krieger

”The Pound House of the Rising Sun”. Hard western starring Doug as the sheriff and Brent as the bad guy.

Björn Lindgren

Adding on, THE HIRED HAND, KID BLUE, and if you wanna see Bob Dylan barely trying to act, PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID

Zane The Brain

I've been listening to John Darnielle's read of his book DEVIL HOUSE on tape and not only is his reading great, but holy hell, the novel is fantastic. The beautiful precision of his poetry is even more satisfying as prose, it almost feels unfair that someone could have immense talent in both areas. I imagine you have had him as a guest on your radar for a while now (having already had Jon Wurster on), but I think John would make a great guest both musically and generally. Other than that, I can only recommend more westerns, without any sense of whether or not they are available on streaming: JOHNNY GUITAR, RED SUN, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN, WOMAN THEY ALMOST LYNCHED, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, NAVAJO JOE, BOSS, and if you're looking to get a little stranger GREASER'S PALACE and LUST IN THE DUST

I recommend to Tim and everyone else the album Looks Like Rain by Mickey Newbury, from 1969. Beautiful country-ish record that was a huge influence on Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, etc.

Sam Jackson

Yeah those Anthony Mann westerns with Jimmy Stewart are awesome, highly recommended

Sam Jackson

I keep circling back to the newest Fruit Bats - A River Running to Your Heart and kind of like romantic, old school reggae like Delroy Wilson and Alton Ellis. Not big on reality tv either, but I agree with Edi on the hilarious “cringe” factor of the Golden Bachelor. Just watched RiffTrax Live “RAD” was super funny! Zoom belly dance classes with teacher from Mumbai, India is keeping me (relatively) sane, challenged, and creatively inspired. (Appreciate the question)

Dana

Yeah, I've enjoyed some of the podcast episodes since Mike Major Entertainer linked to it on IG, took the dive and finally ordered the book

Herb Shellenberger

Happy birthday!! 🎉 Volunteering at a community radio station sounds super fun!

I just read David Milch's memoir. Highly recommended.

Bramley Apple

watching some early henry selick shorts - 'slow bob in the lower dimensions' is fucking awesome and strange and wonderful. also started properly getting into massive attack recently! mezzanine is an excellent album, calming in a way i didn't expect. thanks for the western recs tim! excited to watch em

catsey

I third Lone Star recommendation, I love that movie

Bramley Apple

There’s a true crime docuseries on Netflix called “Escaping Twin Flames”. Pretty standard, crappy true crime stuff about a cyber cult, but the guy who leads the cult is SO reminiscent of OC Tim. The poorly constructed speeches, intense narcissism, the endless “business” off shoots. I imagine there’s probably some inspiration for next season in there (not that you guys need it).

chris e

Sisters Brothers is a fantastic book as well

My friend reads Berserk and recommended Vagabond, a mature samurai manga. Just a general tip I hope will be helpful in your search: Berserk is in the “seinen” genre of manga, which Japan gears towards older males with adult themes/content. so you could look up those types of manga. lots of popular manga is in the “shonen” genre, which they gear towards boys/young men. Shonen is what I grew up with and is a major inspiration for the action scenes in my novel.

Great record from a few years ago, Rudy Stone’s The Blinking Light: https://open.spotify.com/album/21V3ku8GIm32gPauw8EZDo?si=MwQUdHs5RiuraUdj67riLw And this is the best ‘Paul McCartney record’ that he had nothing to do with: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5JXXKz2qCRAfyEUhGT2rcR?si=fKoC22k6S561z-sNI9te8w

I just read “The Wolves of Eternity” by Karl Ove Knausgård. Great stuff. Like reading the most engrossing descriptions of paint drying. The Border Trilogy by Cormac McCarthy is great for a Western kick. Blood Meridian too. I found Lonesome Dove boring, predictable, and unnecessarily long. Just my opinion, sorry to ruffle feathers.

Harrison

I need to expand on their discography but Vulture Culture's bassline *always* hooks me. And of course the commentary of the lyrics...so good

Latest Sufjan record and coooooold sunny mornings.

That’s a good one. I recently started listening to the podcast of the same name where they interview a lot of the people mentioned in the book.

The song "I Will Take You There" by Harry Nilsson is making my day sweeter. And Wipers has been my fave band as of late :)

Lindsey Taylor

Just starting to read "Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age" by Will York, a thick and satisfying read about a lot of bands who I've been into for so long but are pretty elusive (Caroliner, Tuxedomoon, Minimal Man, etc.) and including a good dose of Gregg Turkington info for all his different contributions to that scene.

Herb Shellenberger

I am watching Sid and Nancy, Criterion Collection Blu-Ray on a Samsung 70” 4K UHD TV. It’s a choice biopic, regardless of pronunciation

Seconding this! In my top ten of the year at this point. Stunning stuff.

Killing Them Softly is a great film too - really atmospheric and quite prescient of a post Obama USA. Was not a fan of Blonde though!

Listening to a lot of Alan Parsons Project lately.

I’ve been checking out this Timmy Heidecker guy with the Doug and Vic thing. They do a thing weekly it been a steady since the pandemic. But they need a musical guest when they do the night shows!!!

Marcus Collar

Hey Tim - thanks for doing these! Are you into Michael Nau??? Feels like you might really dig him. Looks like he's playing L.A. on 2/15. Would be an INCREDIBLE Office Hours guest. Here's a live track from a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WtYWPXdH_o

Eric Doyle

Just saw “The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford” for the first time and it was great! Took me to a different place like you mentioned. An earlier movie of the director’s, “The Proposition” is also amazing and a great western (in Australia) - both feature music by Nick Cave. Also getting into Ron S. Peno’s work!

Mettakite

I just watched the Ronnie James Dio documentary and whether you love, like, don't like, don't care about this metal icon, I feel confident in saying that it is a very good doc and will keep your interest all the way to the end. It opened me up to the later Sabbath work and I gotta say, it's rockin'! but, not like Dokken. Better!

Yes! Love that one Martin 👍

jeff s

Looks like Spade's got a fake beard in that video. My hot take: He's Never Been Funny.

Martin Degrell

About to dive into Alan Partridge’s new audiobook for some much needed laughs. As for music I can’t stop playing Mitski’s new record. Also, for the comic-heads out there - I’m halfway through Daniel Clowes’ ‘Monica’. It’s full of lots of weirdness - he really is the David Lynch of comics.

Joss Humberstone

In addition to the above-mentioned Johnny Guitar, another great female-centric western is Sam Fuller's 40 Guns starring Barbara Stanwyck. 'Guitar' is more out there, with tons more fun queer subtexts, but 'Guns' is highly entertaining too.

Martin Degrell

I really recommend the album “Cyclamen” by Nuria Graham. Catalan-Irish songwriter from Barcelona and its really solid autumn stuff

Raider Villalobos

Came here to write this -- very much second the Boetticher/Scott collabs. Not as 'neat' as Ford but not quite revisionist either. Short, compact, often quite grim, and beautiful

I know Tim's not a big cartoon fan - but Scavenger's Reign has been blowing my partner and I away. Really beautiful adult animated sci-fi series on Max. I work in TV animation so I barely ever watch it (feels like I'm at work most of the time) but this is something special for any scifi lovers out there.Caught the first epis

Some of my favorite westerns. Wagon master - since you mentioned you liked my darling clementine this is another of my favorite Ford westerns. The westerner - William Wyler Canyon passage and Way of a gaucho - both by Jacques tourneur I know others have mentioned Nicholas ray’s great Johnny Guitar. I would also recommend another Ray western called the lusty men. Tennessee’s Partner - Allan Dwan movie starring Ronald Reagan. Dwan has a lot of other good westerns too. Day of the outlaw- Andre de Toth Apache Drums - Hugo Fregonese A couple of more modern westerns I would mention are John Sayles’ movie from the 90’s called Lone Star, and Tommy Lee Jones’ Three burials of melquiades Estrada.

jeff s

Listening to: Lots of Protomartyr. They went from a band I really liked to a band I love this past year. Experiencing them live for the first time propelled that jump. Always listening to The War on Drugs. On that note: Any chance of getting Adam Granduciel rebooked in the near future? And Drugs turned me on to a band called Advertisement. Their new album is fantastic. Check out the songs Victory and Dancing Scrooge.

Chad

I actually never watched many Western Westerns. Growing up, I was more obsessed with spaghetti Italian Westerns by Sergio Leone. If you dip into the Dollars trilogy, I would love to hear your rankings. But thanks for the suggestions, I should branch out, head West. I’ve been chipping away at The Shining, it’s going to take me all year. Maybe dip into more horror with the comic “Tomie”.

lilula9

Love Gosho!

jeff s

Yes, Boetticher was great. Similarly, I would also add Anthony Mann and Allan Dwan Westerns. And Jacques Tourneur!

jeff s

I read Michael Mann and Meg Gardner's Heat 2, which was phenomenal. The tension is so unbearable I was screaming, and the showdowns between the characters are cataclysmic. I know people love the film Heat, but I find it to be ungainly and struggling to get out its turning points and characters. Heat 2 addresses those criticisms with its pinpoint precision. It was electrifying. I read John le Carre's Karla trilogy - Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy; The Honourable Schoolboy; and Smiley's People, all of which are excellent and made me feel the moral cost of spycraft and how its characters have to do things they don't like for pyrrhic victories. You have to really read closely to pay attention at times with the many characters and le Carre's use of British English, but it's quite powerful. I saw C'mon C'mon, which is pretty good, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Symphony for a Massacre is a great French noir about a quiet killer who betrays his mob of thieves that got a beautiful restoration. I rewatched Ikiru from Akira Kurosawa, which has so much passion and is so beautiful, though I felt the plot got a little less pointed by the last half of the movie. And I recommend Harold Lloyd's Girl Shy (1924) which I saw at the New Beverly with an audience that cheered and laughed in all the right places. One of my favorite films. I've seen it at least 20 times. Watch it with the score by Robert Israel. An early romantic comedy that's hilarious, makes us cheer for its characters, and has heart and fantastic stunts, including a ten minute thrill sequence to stop a wedding. The ending was copied in The Graduate, Our Gang characters show up, and there's a chariot chase in the thrill sequence that was copied in the silent Ben Hur and influenced William Wyler's Ben Hur. My second favorite Harold Lloyd film is The Kid Brother, which also has fantastic stunts, comedy, and a lot of heart. I rewatched Sidney Lumet's Prince of the City, which is one of my favorite films. It's stunning, powerful, and shows a corrupt cop trying to launder his conscience by informing on corruption while protecting himself and his partners, but he can do neither and must betray them. The film puts its protagonist through hell with impossible moral choices, and by the end, it's not even really clear if he's a good guy or not. It's chilling. Finally, here's Jordan Peterson's demented new fascist music video, featuring Ben Shapiro and Dave Rubin. Not sure the word I'd use is "recommended" for it, but it's good to gawk at: https://youtu.be/iQTDEnfW4ng?si=3D4SajZxKlwHgnzJ

Watching: I’m late to the game, but I recently binged Review. Very funny, and I didn’t expect to be emotionally crushed in the last episode. And I’ll keep saying it until everyone experiences it: Reservation Dogs. It recently finished its three-season run and was one of the best shows of the past decade. Reading: Poverty, By America. Informative, sad and infuriating all in one.

i’ve been on a big western kick for a while too. i highly recommend the movie Hud, its not your typical 1880s western, a little more modern. paul newman is amazing in it. the audio version of Blood Meridian by cormac mccarthy is really good. and if you haven’t watched the pbs doc about the west, called “The West” its a good one too. and listen to some marty robbins tunes.

I've been really into Rifkin's Festival

Let’s assume David has never seen No More BS - the funniest thing is that DS is just now arriving on “cola war” comedy, when Tim’s example of what hack comedy sounds like already exists.

Phil Braun

I love the Kinks album Sleepwalker. I've been reading this book about Orson Welles' drawings and sketches, I'm obsessed with it. It was kind of sappy but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed that Robert Downey Sr. doc on Netflix.

Spade also did it about a year ago on Kimmel (9:00 mark) https://youtu.be/-9B7DpFmA4c

Slow West & Hostiles are some good modern westerns. And Sisters Brothers of course. Bone Tomahawk if ya wanna get gross.

On the topic of televangelists and whatnot with Edi, I just watched a documentary called “The Secrets of Hillsong” on Hulu. It was good if a little long. Lots of hipster pastor cringe that I’m sure inspired Kelvin Gemstone’s general look. Finished Will Sergeant’s (Echo and the Bunnymen) second memoir “Echoes.” I recommend it and his first if you’re a fan. Also reading “Hot Zone” which I stumbled onto while trying to find something genuinely scary to read around Halloween. It’s about the discovery of Ebola virus and other “hot viruses.” It’s fascinating and terrifying.

William Riley

Destry Rides again 1939 is a really great western a bit lighter fare though it still has some pathos. I often go to noir or westerns for escape. I'll have to check out Red River its Howard Hawks I see, I loved Rio Bravo. Thank you for another great OHL!

Dudeface

Holy shit that David spade video is criminal

What I've been consuming lately: Movies - I've kicked off a Heinosuke Gosho deep dive. Gosho is a contemporary of Ozu and Naruse but seemingly very unknown in the West. Practically none of his films have been officially released with English subtitles. Only three films in so far but these are densely woven plots with incredible acting and a serious focus on the cause and effect of small actions. Closest I've seen to Italian Neorealism in postwar Japanese cinema. Music - Rebuilt my iPod this summer and been biking around to the old mp3 library and plugging it into the stereo at the factory I work at. Lots of nostalgia listening, but the two biggest "discoveries" are Paul Bley's Touching and They Threw Us by Liars. Not sure why I never gave Liars a chance, but they helped me through a stressful summer. Lit - Kind of halfway re-reading Blood Meridian since it's been in my backpack. Keep forgetting where I left off so re-reading a lot of stuff over and over again. Best thing I've read lately is Berzerk which I finally caught up on. First manga I've ever really read so would appreciate any recs based off that.

I’ve been listening to an Australian musician called Hatchie. Not sure if dream pop is your thing, but I’m obsessed.

Jacob Mraz

”Johnny Guitar” is a great and strange western. Very good!

Björn Lindgren

Never Seen Red River, but I remember that was the movie they were watching in the Last Picture Show, which is a very good and very fucked up movie. I haven't seen many classic Westerns apart from High Noon, which is a masterpiece. IIRC Scorsese really loved the Searchers. When I was younger, I enjoyed revisionist Westerns like Little Big Man and McCabe and Mrs. Miller.

Bramley Apple

I just binged “Shrinking” on AppleTV+ and it was great! Also go see The Holdovers, I was an extra in it! Really good movie! A big get, but David Spade would be a fun guest!

Jamie Babs

David Fincher’s The Killer is a brilliant piece of satire, besides being just a pretty great killer-for-hire movie. And now it’s on Netflix (although worth seeing in a cinema if you can)!

Filip Boratyn

Reading Lonesome Dove currently and planning to watch the mini series once I’m finished. Could be another addition to your western kick!

Mac Rowe

Lonesome Dove is one of the best books of all time, and a western to boot! Incredible stuff

Kyle

Killer show 👏 Sad to see the level the Spadester has sunken to. Also sad he is beging swallowed by a hat 🥴

bugboy9

Tim, if you're looking for escapist westerns that still pack a punch and have beautiful compositions, I'd recommend the films Budd Boetticher made with Randolph Scott. Ride Lonesome and The Tall T in particular. Westerns are a good rabbit hole to fall down. Outside of the 50 or so universally recognized classics, there are a lot of hidden gems, fun B-movies and interesting twists on the old formulas. And that doesn't even include the Italians.

I've been obsessed with David Cronenberg films. Particularly Videodrome

Jasper St Germain

Speaking of westerns , my son has been playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption lately asked me if there was a movie that had “red dead vibes” and I almost ran up to the blu ray collection and tumbled down the stairs with my copy of “The Good,The bad and the Ugly” before he could finish his question. Movie went over really well (had to watch it in two installments) Listen- a lot of the Clash and Joe Strummer solo albums lately Cook- baked ziti with a mushroom tomato gravy Read/Podcast- 60 Songs that Explain the 90s by Rob Harvilla (excellent podcast with a book dropping Tuesday)

Eric Anderson
