Diz Dad / Show Biz Dude

Good Sunday to you!

I'm here recovering for one hell of a Saturday.   Yesterday we went to Disneyland for Charlie's 7th Birthday.  We went with the Carlins, as Matt's daughter Stella is one of Charlie's closest friends. It was hot and crowded folks. Boy they pack em in!  Marilyn and Christina had a plan for where to park, and what rides to hit (all with Charlie's approvals) so Matt and I just kinda went along for the ride and tried to be helpful...

Our first ride was the Depp-heavy Pirates of the Caribbean... right before we got on the boat, Charlie had second thoughts and got scared about the whole thing. He wanted to bail, but we gently coaxed him in and once the right got going he loosened up declaring "This is fun!!!"   After that it was a game of finding the rides with the shortest lines as we filled in the time before our one "Genie Pass" reserved ride, and Charlie's favorite: Haunted Mansion.

I had one moment of "Fuck This" as we all tried to decide what to do for lunch... Mostly due to grumpy hunger, I had the feeling of "why am i doing this? why am I playing into this deeply cynical place where they're trying to fleece you at every turn. why am i an active participant in this con job?"  But that feeling passed after a way better than it needed to be Fried Chicken plate.

Matt said it at the end of the day "our kids would be just as happy or maybe even happier just jumping around in a bounce house and playing around the house." Sure would be cheaper.  But they truly did have a dumb old blast and I'm happy to provide my son an annual dose of that kinda shit.

We drove home just in time for me to watch one of the most painful innings of baseball I've ever seen. Clayton Kershaw came out and right away just got nearly beaten to death.  It was DEEE-Pressing.  Diamondbacks have come to play. Could be a disaster in the making for us Dodger Dads.

THEN! (surely Tim, you just went right to bed after a 95-degree Diz Day... No, then Marilyn and I went to a full-on HOLLYWOOD Party!

It's the only real party I care to attend and one of the few am invited to - It's Sarah Silverman's annual rooftop party - which had been dormant since Covid... We walked in and it was like a time capsule of the last time she had the party - The same people... This is not a bad thing! I'll briefly break down who I spent some time with, not to brag but there are some people I ONLY see at this party but when I do, we hit it off and talk so much that i wonder why I only see them there!  (ok, also to brag)

- My dear friends Aimee Mann and Michael Penn were first up... hadn't seen them in a while and we were happy to catch up.

- Joe Mande, Natasha Leggero, Rikki Lindhome - we talked about my Club Random, the strike ending - do we still love what we do...

- I met Doug Stanhope for the first time, and he geeked out on me, being a huge Tim and Eric fan.  We exchanged numbers and I think i wanna stay in touch with that dude. we had a lot of laughs.

- Maron - I begged forgiveness for skipping his party and he gave me good-natured shit for it. We're good, man. We're good.

- Julia Sweeney! never met her before, but we hit it off right away when I complained about this podcast she did with Carvey and Spade about Phil Harman that she was on and I felt she wasn't given enough space to talk... We got INTO it!

- Steven Merchant - He's the guy I love to see the most at this party and we got INTO it right away, talking for about 20 mins about comedy, where we're at, what I'm doing with Office Hours and just generally goofing. I love him and I think he loves me? I gotta get him on the show or at least be better about staying in touch.

- Katherine Hahn - I did the movie "Flower" with her, playing her husband... and when I saw her I did a bit where I asked her if we're still Married or because of the SAG Strike it doesn't apply anymore. Dumb! But she played right along and then we generally caught up. She claimed to had just been talking about me to another actor who I had done a movie with and how nice it was but she couldn't think of who it was. It was driving us both nuts. WHO KATHERINE? WHOOOO?

-Dimitri Martin - another one who I've ONLY ever spoken to at this party but we gel very quickly and always have a nice, adult conversation about all sorts of things.

- Jake Fogelnest:  the only selfie I took and we had a nice chat, mostly about how much he loves Office Hours and how cool it is that I built this nice little community here.  I took the picture to show off the new chat feature on Patreon! Cool!

Natasha Lyonne - I got to know Natasha a bit when she was with Fred... we always have a fun, silly rapport -  I was showing her pictures of the kids at Disneyland and scolding her for not being more involved with my children. She's so funny and truly how you hope she'd be - that is:  she is who she is.

Sam Richardson - we laughed and goofed and promised to do something somehow. Earlier I had talked to Akiva Shaffer about how he,  Sam and Tim Robinson try and get dinner every once in a while and thought to invite me - I'm like YEA, do it!

Talking with Akiva, Andy Sandberg came by on his way out and we tried to have a conversation but as we were talking the part in Psycho Killer where Byrne starts going "Eye Eye Eye Eye..." started ramping up and we both just started singing along to that to each other. It was stupid and funny enough that it was all we really needed to say to each other. It's funny, I have known those guys and a lot of those people at the party for going on 20 years!

People like Nick Kroll - known him forever! And we were never that close but when we would talk it would be fun and easy. Last night we got into in - first goofing around but then got a little deeper - family, where we're at with our careers and creatively. He was so complimentary of what we're doing, especially the Club Random thing.  It was a really warm chat that I think was built on just knowing each other for so long.

Other sightings  - Owen Wilson.  Didn't talk to him.  Beck was there looking like a full Michael Cera dop. I didn't talk to him. What's there to say to old Beck?  Sacha Baron Cohen - I've had nice chats with him before, but not last night.  What of Sarah Silverman? Didn't talk to her! Just a warm hug and hello upon our entry to the party.

This is to say, it felt good to see so many people I genuinely admire and like.   I felt really connected to a community of creative people - lifers who are all figuring out how to do it and keep doing it because it's too late to stop now!

I always have slight dread going to these things - fuckin' socializing... do I belong here? What am I gonna TALK about?   But I couldn't have felt more among my people!  Marilyn said on the way home "That was really energizing!"

Don't be surprised to see some of those names show up on the show sooner or later.

PS, truly don't mean to be name-dropping, folks.  But please dunk on me if you must!

Peace and LOVE! -t

Steven Merchant as in Stephen Merchant? If so, that'd be so cool on OHL

Plibt

Lovely stuff, glad you had a good time

Adam Leslie

2021 Christmas show. And one of the patreon Beatles episodes. Maybe more?

Josh Rachbach

This is funny cuz I always was into the culture of musicians and comedians that you seemed to have hit it off with. Has Aimee been on the show yet?! 🤩

Lindsey Taylor

Selfishly enjoy Tim’s namedropping stories because he might be reeling in those big industry guests for OHL

Ev

Would be interesting to hear the other side’s version of meeting Tim.

Björn Lindgren

2 Kaoss pads and a microphone

Just hide behind a painting

(Just for context a person was posting some accusatory stuff and this was my response to them. Their posts have since been removed). ** Chill out. Every one of us in the USA is complicit in some way to global death and destruction just by our existence in this country. Ranting on a Patreon chat isn’t going to free the oppressed.

OLD BECK

Josh Rachbach

he zoomed in a while back! and ya total hunk

skeletonmeat

I love Julia Sweeney, she’s from my hometown! And agreed, those guys should move on past Hans & Frans and let guests share their own stories more.

Shempin Jack Flash

Haha no I just didn’t talk to him at all but I can see how it reads that way!

Tim Heidecker

To the party and the Disney outing you finally got finished with, in the sparse but powerful words of Mr. Cohen--Very Nice!!

lilula9

Get Stanhope on the show or make something with him!!!

KD

Stanhope geeking out over Tim and Eric makes me smile

Sam B

I lived next door to him in Maui for a year and we became friends. Nice but quiet. Always let me use his private beach and invited me to his parties that he would sometimes not even be at!!

KatieMoe

So….are you implying that you had a not nice convo with SBC? 🤔

Kevin S.

Steven Merchant would be huuuuge

abi harding

I have the biggest Sam Richardson crush and hope that we can get him on the show soon!!

I loved Hello Ladies

Dan

next year wear a gopro to the party and live stream it.

Kyle

I think it's kind of an accepted thing where that's how their show goes. They've gotten tons of feedback criticizing them for jerking each other off so vigorously while ignoring guests, and they've commented on it laughed about it, then continued on relentlessly.

avj

I think he toes the line between those nimrods and more sensible people. I know he used to be a big libertarian but apparently now calls himself an anarchist. And he’s been vocally supportive of abortion rights and LGBTQ+ rights, so he’s definitely not a monster. Calling a woman fat as an insult isn’t the most egregious thing but it’s just kinda boneheaded. This was like 8 years ago so maybe he’s evolved since then. 🤷‍♂️

Randy Faucheux

Exciting stuff!! Doug S. as fanboy - wow! Seen him a few times! Glad Charlie had a fun birthday! 💜🥳💕May I suggest another potential fun guest, Eric Fensler. Really knows his pancakes/influencer vibe!

Dana

That’s a big vuggin’ roof, my man. Owen Wilson in person? Always imagine he’s just dressed as his Royal character.

Brian Rooney

Tim, you've dunked on me for the last time. You've become a 1 percenter of the hollywood elite. I missed the days of you being a fringe, on the spectrum every-man that us no-lifers could relate to.

Ryan Helsten

Merchant: It was such a dirty, dirty shame that HELLO LADIES didn't have a longer run. That show is hilarious, chill, and a big LA comfort blanket all at once. La la love it!

The Daily Ghost

Hollywood Heidecker rubbing elbows with the big boys!

Mister Social

Oh fart!

Jordon G

Body-shaming is a very cool image to cultivate!

Randy Faucheux

Just his image bro

Tim

I saw Justin Bieber at the farmers market this morning. Should have hit him with the psycho killer aye aye aye aye aye

James Gilmore

Was shared as a video on here last weekend bro!

Tim

Would russell brand normally show up at a party like that, I wonder. I suspect he's in hiding.

CB

Just realized you were talking about the live show and not the studio follow up, which is what I heard. There's simply hours and hours of pointless content where they make ad money off of their dead friend's name!

Maclaine

Dunk on you?! These stories are why we subscribe.

a mulkey

No dunks brah, just luv ☮️

Derek Bee

It would be great to see Michael Penn on OHL and it would be super great if you could get him to play a bit with the VERY GOOD BAND on your next LP. Thanks for the update T.

Jim D.

Righteous Gemstones is my favorite narrative comedy show in a quite a while. I love everything they've done, but RG is really on another level and I hope it last quite a few more seasons. I feel like there's just so much of that world to explore and so much material to mine from it.

Randy Faucheux

That’s exactly how me and Sweeney felt!

Tim Heidecker

God you people are just pun vultures

Mars Sanford

I’m proud of you, Tim.

Tim Tim

Definitely need Merchant on the show! That might be the one where you try a two-hour format. Edit: I meant three-hour. And you’ve mentioned a few times lately about how you aren’t aware of any comedies that make you laugh. For your consideration: • Reservation Dogs: One of the best shows of any genre in recent years. • This Fool: Executive produced (and a guest star appearance) by Armisen. And co-starring OHL guest Frankie Quinones. • The Righteous Gemstones: Side question - You and Danny McBride ever chat at a Hollywood party? • Reboot: Tragically canceled after six episodes. Still a fun watch. • The Afterparty: Starring Sam Washington, and your buddy John Early has a role in season one. • AP Bio: Canceled now, but still worth the watch.

Chad

Nick Kroll needs to do the show!

Ami York

Thanks for showing me the new chat feature and proud to now be supporting Office Hours on Patreon. Don’t forget — there is Club Random merch available to purchase. Always nice to see you, Tim!

Jake Fogelnest

rooting for the dodgers in this series. the snakes slayed my Brewers in two 😢

TJ K

Tim how did you guys feel about the latest GUSD news? I have 2 kids at Muir and it was definitely a little scary!

Trisha S

Can’t wait to hear that ear story! I’m on the edge of my seat.

Jordon G

Also surprised to hear he was there. He always struck me as a total industry outsider and not someone who would enjoy rubbing elbows with industry insiders.

Randy Faucheux

It would be amazing to have Steven Merchant on the show!

Matt Henderson

Don’t feel bad about name-dropping! It’s cool to hear who was there, who you talked to, and what you talked about. It’s interesting. Tell Sarah to invite ME next time! 😉

bobbylikesthis

Doug Stanhope and Stephen Merchant are 2 of my favorites, keep in touch with them because they're awesome but even better if you nab them for the show!

Scotty P

I listened to that Phil Hartman podcast last week after Facebook forced an ad for it into my feed. Like many others, I absolutely love the Hartman years of SNL and was looking forward to hearing some insights from those that knew him. There were some, mostly from Robert Smigel and Jon Lovitz, but the rest of that show felt really self serving by Carvey and Spade and even some of the other guests. I know they're performers and jokesters and need to be *on* most of the time, but is a three hour "tribute" to a fallen comrade where you're trying to tell the world why he was so great really the place? The whole thing felt off and gross and pointless in the worst way these shallow celebrity podcasts often do.

Maclaine

Ya gotta do Disney, it’s just a rite of passage your kids will always remember going even if it’s a pain. I love the Hollywood party stories because I want it to be an over the top “This is The End” situation but this sounds just very civilized and cool even though I’m sure it was glamorous. One of the best things on the 24 hour best show was back to back Sarah Silverman and Sarah Squirm meeting it was so cute and genuine to witness. I wish you had like a crazy story where like Channing Tatum pushes you into the pool but thanks for sharing.

Sherri Locker

The D-backs are like Disney fried chicken - better than they have any right to be.

Cactus Bandit

Doug Stanhope once called my (now ex) girlfriend a fat boar on his podcast. And he referred to me as “her vaguely effeminate husband”.

Randy Faucheux

I think if they asked him he would come on with N'Odelay

Monique

See if you can get me in next year

Phil Braun

Beck would have to Sea Change before he came on the show

Brandon Fasse

oh boy i really hope Steven Merchant comes on OHL. he makes me belly laugh.
